(WNS) – When it comes to screen time, many parents are ignoring pediatricians’ recommendations, a study released Thursday by Common Sense Media found. The survey looked at media use habits among children ages 0-8 and found several alarming statistics: Nearly half (49 percent) of all children ages 8 and under sometimes or often use screen media in the hour before bedtime, something the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warns against because screen exposure can affect melatonin levels … [Read more...]
‘Nothing new under the sun’: Unborn life, biblical sexuality addressed by the Reformers
JEFFERSON CITY – The author of Ecclesiastes once wisely wrote, “there is nothing new under the sun”. This truism is perhaps best exhibited in society’s current moral failings. For many Christians, it seems as though issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, and gender dysphoria are new problems facing the church. However, a closer examination of church history shows that Christians have argued against these very same moral issues throughout previous generations. As we celebrate the … [Read more...]
School choice marching orders: Giving military families access to education savings
(WNS) – Military families want school choice. That’s the broad takeaway from a new survey conducted by researchers at EdChoice and the Heritage Foundation. Perhaps not coincidentally, the survey’s results bolster the researchers’ advocacy for a school choice program for children from families associated with the federal government – primarily those whose parents are in the military but also Native American children living on tribal lands. Heritage education policy experts Lindsey Burke … [Read more...]
Missouri DR intern shares Jesus in Houston, earns college credits back home
MARYVILLE – Maddy Atwell spent her entire summer preparing for a disaster that never came. A member of Laura Street Baptist Church and a collegiate intern for Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief, she spent her summer training to respond however she was needed, whether in mass care, childcare, laundry, mudout, chaplaincy chainsaw or incident command. And while nobody would complain about a disaster-free summer, it was a little bit ironic when the wettest hurricane on record hit Houston … [Read more...]
Young Bible readers more likely to be faithful adults, study finds
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Most churchgoing Protestant parents of young adults say their kids grew up to be Christians. But half of them don’t actually practice the Christian faith, their parents say. And the biggest factor predicting their spiritual health as young adults is whether they read the Bible regularly as kids. Those are among the findings of a new study among Protestant churchgoers about parenting and spirituality from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. LifeWay Research … [Read more...]
Near-death experience intensifies Kentucky pastor’s gospel witness
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (BP) – After surviving a fiery explosion that nearly killed him, Kentucky megachurch pastor Steve Ayers said he's a changed man, having come out of the ordeal laser-focused on Jesus and telling others about the Gospel before it's too late. "I was committed to evangelism before the accident," said Ayers, senior pastor of the 16,000-member Hillvue Heights Church in Bowling Green, which routinely baptizes more than 500 new believers a year. "I'm completely committed to … [Read more...]
California embraces gender identity laws
(WNS)--The California legislature was a battleground for gender identity issues this year. Four landmark gender bills passed the state Senate and Assembly by the time the session ended Sep. 15, and California Gov. Jerry Brown signed all four this month. On Oct. 4, Brown signed a bill that criminalizes long-term care facility employees’ “misgendering” of residents. The bill requires workers use transgender residents’ preferred pronouns and mandates that residents be allowed to … [Read more...]
Boy Scouts & the disappearing paths
The Boy Scouts of America announced last week that the organization will now accept girls as members, thus ending the uniqueness of this iconic institution. Many commentators have lamented the moral decline of the Boy Scouts, seen in the organization’s steady capitulation to the ideology of the sexual revolution. But there is something deeper going on here, and it goes beyond one’s views of sexual morality. The Path of Wisdom and Virtue The Boy Scouts offered a pathway toward manhood, a … [Read more...]
End IRS oversight of sermons, Protestant pastors say
NASHVILLE – In the 1950s, Congress banned charitable nonprofits – including churches – from endorsing candidates or otherwise intervening in elections. Any nonprofit that violated the ban could run afoul of the IRS. Churches risked losing their tax-exempt status if the preacher endorsed a candidate in a sermon. It’s time for that to change, most Protestant pastors say in a new survey from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. More than 7 in 10 say Congress should bar the IRS from punishing a … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist lawyers critique federal housing allowance ruling
MADISON, Wisc. – For a second time a federal judge in Wisconsin has ruled the U.S. Tax Code’s ministerial housing allowance is unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb once again attempted to strike down the housing allowance, issuing her decision on Oct. 9. Her previous ruling on the matter was struck down by the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. But the ruling does not impact Missouri clergy, only those in Wisconsin so far, said Missouri Baptist Convention general … [Read more...]
Unexpected footprints deal blow to evolution
CRETE (WNS) – Researchers just discovered ancient human footprints on the Greek island of Crete that undermine the Darwinian theory of the descent of humans. Per Ahlberg, one of the study authors, admitted in a statement, “This discovery challenges the established narrative of early human evolution head-on and is likely to generate a lot of debate.” The new discovery presents difficulties for evolutionary theory in two ways. First, evolutionary scientists believe human beings … [Read more...]
