This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. After Satan’s release from the abyss, which John depicts in Revelation 20:7, the evil one proves himself unreformed and undeterred. He immediately returns to his life of crime, setting out to deceive the nations once again and gather them for battle against Christ and his followers. As soldiers of this newly formed axis of evil … [Read more...]
God will provide
EDITOR'S NOTE: Jason Myers serves as vice president with the MBCH Children and Family Ministries. In Genesis 22, God calls Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac on a mountain in the land of Moriah. As they journeyed, Isaac noticed there was no lamb for the offering. Abraham responded with faith: “The Lord will provide.” And He did. At the last moment, an angel stopped Abraham, and God provided a ram caught in a thicket. Someday in heaven, I’d love to hear the ram’s side of the story. Maybe … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist Apologetics Network’s Vaughan serves as resource on Mormons
SPRINGFIELD – John Vaughan lives in south Springfield near the site where Missouri’s third Mormon temple is under construction. He’s a great resource on the beliefs and practices of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and wants to share that information with Missouri Baptists. As the newest member of the Missouri Baptist Apologetics Network, Vaughan has hundreds of files of information he can share with churches as they confront the counterfeit-Christian beliefs of the LDS Church. First, he says, … [Read more...]
The impact of a brief life
“The majority of mortals complain bitterly of the spitefulness of Nature, because we are born for a brief span of life, because even this space that has been granted to us rushes by so speedily and so swiftly that all save a very few find life at an end just when they are getting ready to live . . . It is not that we have a short span of time, but that we waste much of it.” – Seneca the Younger A few Sundays ago, we sang the beautiful hymn, “My Jesus, I Love Thee” by a practically unknown … [Read more...]
Satan and the abyss
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. Before Satan is cast into the lake of fire to be tormented forever, he’s imprisoned for a thousand years, as Revelation 20:1-3 records: “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven holding the key to the abyss and a great chain in his hand. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for … [Read more...]
October is pastor appreciation month
Although most churches have a general appreciation for their pastor, October provides a wonderful opportunity to express gratitude in a more tangible way. Why is this important? Well, thank you for asking! Let me provide a few foundational reasons for expressing gratitude and appreciation for your pastor. 1. Your pastor has been called by God to lead, love, and shepherd. 2. Your pastor spends hours in study and preparation to preach – for your benefit, and for your sanctification. 3. … [Read more...]
Amid incivility, reaffirm liberty of conscience
The assassination last month of Charlie Kirk brought many Americans face-to-face with a gruesome reality encountered all too often across the globe: namely, that a man might be killed simply for expressing what he believes to be true. “It would be a safe but sad bet that someone, somewhere in the world, is killing someone else at this very moment in the name of religion or ideology,” Os Guinness wrote in the first lines of his 2008 book, The Case for Civility. During the past century, … [Read more...]
It’s okay to need each other
When you’re having trouble sleeping, why is it you can turn over and forget what to do with your arms? Like they’re just in a tangle and you’re thinking things like, “Wait, that arm doesn’t go there,” and “That one doesn’t bend that direction,” and “Did I have arms when I went to bed?” Arms akimbo, feeling like just a big ol’ jumble of uncomfortably awkward "limbage." Not to be all up in arms about it, but I’m up. And I have all these arms. A friend said I should just forget about it and … [Read more...]
Satan’s date with destiny
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. The Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Massachusetts is well into its third decade of operation and has yet to report a breakout. The center has earned its reputation as the most technologically advanced and secure prison in the world – even more secure than Russia’s notorious Black Dolphin Prison, or the ADX prison in … [Read more...]
Biblical view of suffering a bulwark against assisted suicide
Despite the attention that abortion rightly receives among pro-life advocates, the “culture of death” has expanded beyond the womb in Western societies. Consider this disturbing example: Cases of assisted suicide and euthanasia have mushroomed in Canada – where, according to the BBC, nearly one in 20 deaths were “medically assisted” in 2023. That is 15,300 deaths out of 320,000. And some Canadian government leaders are now proposing that euthanasia be available to children and teenagers, … [Read more...]
All ‘thinks’ considered
My husband has this baffling ability to say goodnight and then go to sleep. Just like that. Right to sleep. Practically on demand. Does anyone else feel like he has some explaining to do? What is this superpower? What kind of surgery would I need to have to get it? Furthermore, how is he able to work all his overthinking into his schedule? What, he covers it all during the day? That seems impractical. The other night I found myself lying awake, wondering what someone thought about … [Read more...]
What is success in ministry, life?
If I were to ask you, “What is success?”, how would you answer? Would your answer include something tangible, like possessions or gadgets? Would it be quantifiable, like income or position? Would it be relational, like praise and affirmation from others? Would it be generational, as in legacy or notoriety? We all live with a guiding metric for success. What we believe to be true success guides, motivates, and drives us. Our decision-making paradigm comes from our understanding of success. … [Read more...]
