EDITOR'S NOTE: This article includes additional reporting by The Pathway. DALLAS/KANSAS CITY (BP) – Jeremiah Johnston says the seminal event in Christianity’s history should be raised up more often. “The Resurrection of Jesus is tragically under-taught, under-preached, and as a result, under-appreciated and under-applied by the vast majority of Jesus followers and pastors today,” Johnston, associate pastor of apologetics and cultural engagement at Prestonwood Baptist Church, told … [Read more...]
Our once and future glory
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. The Bible speaks of at least four phases of glory for Christians: glory now, glory in death, glory in resurrection, and glory in the restoration of the cosmos. We explore the first two in this column, and the final two in future columns. Glory now It’s our Christian duty to glorify God. As we honor the Father, Son, and Holy … [Read more...]
The simplicity of evangelism
Recently, I took Tara on a “date” to a hardware store. Doesn’t that sound romantic? Although it may not be how most define a date, we enjoy walking around Lowe’s or Menards and simply browsing the aisles, even when we don’t really need anything. On this occasion, we found something small to purchase, and as we checked out, a young employee noticed Tara’s sweatshirt and said, “I really like your shirt!” He was referring to a Scripture on her shirt, so he proceeded to share his testimony, … [Read more...]
MODR remains active; an Easter season prayer for protection
Missouri Disaster Relief (MODR) remains active this month. Not only are volunteer MODR teams still responding to the March 14th tornadoes, but they’ve been active in recent months responding to fires in California and last fall’s hurricane on the East Coast. They have worked, literally, from coast to coast. Then, early this month, tornadoes hit the state again. On April 4, MODR sent the following update about tornado response via email: “As many of you know, we’ve experienced significant … [Read more...]
Redeeming the time, feather by feather
I remember when I was a young night owl, poking merciless fun at any and all of the early birds in my life. What did they even get out of early-birding? Worms? I’ll take the extra sleep, thanks. Then I became an adult, and guess what happened. Nope, not that. Because, still not an early bird. But in a strange irony, not a night owl either. Present-day me would like a flock in the middle. Isn’t there a medium rare bird? Wait no, that sounds like a terrible idea. But instead of an early bird … [Read more...]
Glorification of the saints
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. Memphis Belle is one of the most celebrated aircraft of World War II. Named after the girlfriend of chief pilot Robert Morgan, the lumbering B-17F Flying Fortress carried the first U.S. crew to complete twenty-five combat missions over Europe before returning to America. Based in England, Belle coursed through flak-filled skies … [Read more...]
Christian baptism can be costly, rewarding
Too often, we take for granted the biblical practice of believer’s baptism. Of course, we see it as something to celebrate, but we’re sometimes in need of a reminder about how important it really is, and why. Several years ago, a friend asked me about baptism – and not merely out of intellectual curiosity. He came from a Catholic background, and, though he had placed his faith in Christ, he was hesitant to accept believer’s baptism. To do so would come with costs. Likewise, I’ve known of … [Read more...]
What no one tells you when you’re building a culture of prayer
How long does it take to create a culture of prayer in a church? No matter how much your church needs a culture of prayer, it won’t happen after a single sermon on prayer, or an announcement of your vision or one dynamic prayer meeting. Have you ever visited Mount Rushmore in South Dakota? The enormous memorial to four presidents – Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln – whose realistic likenesses are all carved into a mountain side, took about eight years longer to complete … [Read more...]
Stand against ungodliness, celebrate fruitful ministry
During the past several years, opponents to biblical truth and morality have used Missouri’s initiative petition process to inject ungodliness into the state’s constitution. Last fall, Missouri pro-lifers faced defeat when pro-abortion Amendment 3 was taken to voters across the state—even though churches and pro-life agencies were outspoken in opposing this constitutional amendment. Similarly, recreational marijuana was unfortunately legalized in 2022 when it came before Missouri voters … [Read more...]
You be you being you
Someone called me Super Woman the other day, and I received it. Practically caped it. It was completely undeserved and the cape altogether ill-fitting, and still: received it. Just so’s you know though, anytime I’m acting like I have everything all together, feel free to remind me that sometimes I still sing the song to find my way to the book of Ezra (she said, trying to smooth out the cape-wrinkles). I wonder if I’ve always been this…this…what’s the word? “Layered” maybe? Public me. … [Read more...]
The unbeliever’s resurrection
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. There’s less in Scripture about the resurrection of the wicked than there is about the glorification of the just. Nevertheless, the Bible gives us enough information to know that those who reject Christ are physically resurrected one day and separated forever from God. Daniel gives us the clearest Old Testament glimpse of the … [Read more...]
Four prayer goals to pursue in the New Year
EDITOR'S NOTE: This article first appeared on Baptist Press. Do you have any goals for your prayer life? C. S. Lewis once said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” About 60% of young adults will make New Year resolutions this year, hoping new goals will lead to self-improvement. Since we never grow spiritually by accident, here are 4 prayer goals to pursue in the new year. Think why not just how There are innumerable resources on “how” to pray – a … [Read more...]
