Mohler open to meeting with gay author
David roach/Baptist Press LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) — Through an exchange on Twitter, R. Albert Mohler Jr. has expressed his willingness to meet with author Matthew Vines, whose new book God and the Gay Christian argues that Scripture permits monogamous homosexual relationships. Four Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professors who contributed with Mohler to an e-book critiquing Vines also apparently have shared their interest on Twitter in meeting with him. Mohler, president of Southern … [Read more...]
Is Mormonism really necessary?
As the official version of the story goes, in 1820, 14-year-old Joseph Smith went into the woods near his home in rural New York to pray. There, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him. Caught up in the Protestant revivalism of his day, Smith inquired as to which of the Christian denominations he should join. None of them, he was told, because they were all wrong. “The Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight,” Smith later … [Read more...]
Documentary on Joplin Tornadoes
JOPLIN – Where is God in the midst of a storm? Specifically, where was God in the 2011 EF5 tornado that killed 158 people and caused more than a billion dollars in damage in Joplin? What about the 2013 EF5 tornado that killed 24 and inured nearly 400 in Moore, Okla. last year? A new documentary, “Where Was God? Stories of Hope After the Storm,” attempts to answer that question. During an interview with The Pathway, Oklahoma film maker Chris Forbes said the short answer is that He was … [Read more...]
‘Heaven Is For Real’ stirs discussion of heaven
DAVID ROACH/Baptist Press NASHVILLE (BP) – Southern Baptists have mixed reviews of “Heaven Is For Real,” a Sony Pictures movie released April 16 about a 4-year-old boy who claimed he was transported to heaven as he underwent emergency surgery. Commentators said the movie presents opportunities for evangelism and considering the Bible’s teaching on heaven. But they also warned that the film is theologically inaccurate and reveals Christians’ propensity to trust “fanciful” accounts rather … [Read more...]
Thank God for earthquakes
The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 changed everything. In minutes this thriving, affluent city was brought to its knees. Roughly 50,000 people died. The sky turned black. Fires raged. Then tidal waves washed over the port, drowning hundreds more. Later, Voltaire wrote a poem challenging the prevailing view that this was a divine act of judgment. “Whilst you these facts replete with horror view, will you maintain death to their crimes was due?” he penned, adding, “Can you then impute a sinful … [Read more...]
Study: Cremation gaining acceptance
Bob Smietana/Baptist Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP) – Cremation may be the new American response to death, according to a survey by LifeWay Research. The study, which surveyed 1,036 Americans, shows that about 4 in 10 (41 percent) say they plan to be cremated. Six in ten (58 percent) say being cremated won’t keep you from being resurrected to live in heaven. And few (14 percent) say cremation is wrong. The LifeWay online survey reflects the growing acceptance of cremation, which has become … [Read more...]
Christian worldview called ‘map of reality’
HANNIBAL – As the first speaker at the 2014 Missouri Baptist Convention Worldview Conference April 3, Anthony Allen prefaced the day’s topics with a basic understanding of what a Christian worldview is. Allen, the president of Hannibal-LaGrange University, which hosted the conference, said a Christian worldview means the gospel has a bearing on every aspect of life, including culture. It is the idea behind Eph. 6:12: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, … [Read more...]
Hobby Lobby attorney: Return to self-government
HANNIBAL – As a member of the legal team that defended Hobby Lobby before United States Supreme Court, University of Missouri law professor Joshua Hawley told participants at the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Worldview Conference, April 3, that they must bring their faith to bear in the public sphere. “We are charged to carry into politics and into public God’s purpose for government and political society,” Hawley said, “to advocate for a truly just society, for human freedom, for the … [Read more...]
Apologist: Our decisions have eternal consequences
HANNIBAL – When Rob Phillips searched the Internet for answers to the question, “What happens when I die?” he found more than 312 million responses. “Your worldview drives your answers,” the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) communications director and North American Mission Board (NAMB) certified apologist said during the MBC’s Worldview Conference at Hannibal-LaGrange University, April 3. After reading Luke 16:19-31, where a rich man and a poor man named Lazarus lived and died, … [Read more...]
Does the Bible prove preexistence?
Our Mormon friends teach the doctrine of eternal progression. Among other things, it means that all people were born into the spirit world – through sexual relations between God and one of his wives – prior to taking on earthly bodies. As Mormon.org puts it: “Your life didn’t begin at birth and it won’t end at death. Before you came to earth, your spirit lived with Heavenly Father who created you. You knew Him, and He knew and loved you. It was a happy time during which you were taught … [Read more...]
Review: ‘Noah’ drifts in sea of errors, but Christian themes float above the flood
Before I went to see the matinee of Darren Aronofsky’s new movie, Noah, I reread the biblical narrative. In the HCSB version, it’s just over 2,000 words and took me all of five minutes to finish. So how does a filmmaker – an atheist filmmaker – make a 138-minute $130 million-dollar blockbuster from such brief source material? The answer is that you throw the scripture into a blender and add a ton of filler. But although Aronofsky – who publicly said he set out to make the least biblical … [Read more...]
