FORT WORTH (BP) – Christians can graciously speak the truth about homosexuality and biblical marriage, New Testament scholar Robert A.J. Gagnon said during an institute hosted by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s Land Center for Cultural Engagement last year. Gagnon said that those who mention Jesus’ citation of Lev. 19:18, the command to love one’s neighbor, in defense of homosexuality and the redefinition of marriage often ignore the immediate context of this passage of … [Read more...]
When the Bible speaks to Mormons
Lynn Wilder and her husband were quintessential Mormons. Lynn had served for eight years as a professor at Brigham Young University, the flagship school of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Michael was a high priest, temple worker, seminary teacher and Sunday School president. Their eldest sons had completed two-year missions assignments, and their daughter was demonstrating a strong faith in the LDS Church’s founder, Joseph Smith. Then, as Lynn explains it, … [Read more...]

HANNIBAL – Joshua Hawley, associate professor of law at the University of Missouri, will speak at the Missouri Baptist Convention’s (MBC) annual Worldview Conference here, April 3, less than two weeks after he stands before the United States Supreme Court in a landmark case on religious liberty. Hawley serves on the legal team that will defend Hobby Lobby before the Supreme Court, March 25. The Green family – the Southern Baptist owners of Hobby Lobby – filed a lawsuit against the … [Read more...]
Page: Bright future possible with God
Timothy Sweetman/MBTS communications KANSAS CITY (BP) – Calling his message a “frightening responsibility” because of his desire to speak accurately, while simultaneously being “honoring of our Lord,” Frank Page, president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Executive Committee, delivered an “State of the SBC” address at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Students, faculty, staff and local church pastors from Missouri, Kansas and the Midwest region gathered in the … [Read more...]
Mohler declares ‘cultural Christianity is dead’
By Aaron Cline Hanbury via SBTS News While “cultural Christianity is dead” in an increasingly secular America, evangelicals have the “theological resources” to keep the faith, R. Albert Mohler Jr. said during a public discussion about faith and politics on the campus of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mohler, the president of the seminary, joined nationally syndicated radio show host and conservative pundit Dennis Prager and The New York Times columnist Ross Douthat for the … [Read more...]
Inerrancy ‘drift’ festers in Christian academia
Keith Collier/SWBTS FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) – Challenges in biblical inerrancy facing Christian colleges and seminaries were aired during the Evangelical Theological Society’s annual meeting in Baltimore. “The doctrine of Scripture is like a continental divide,” Greg Wills, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary’s dean of theology, said during a panel discussion. “Your doctrine of Scripture is not like one doctrine in a basket full of doctrines,” Wills said. “It’s the doctrine that … [Read more...]
Reading the Bible with misplaced expectations
“The Bible is full of contradictions.” So say many critics of God’s Word. When asked to provide examples, however, critics often reveal a gross misunderstanding of the writers’ purposes, according to Douglas S. Huffman, a contributor to In Defense of the Bible: A Comprehensive Apologetic for the Authority of Scripture. While alleged contradictions come in many forms, one of the most common is that of misplaced expectations; that is, critics approach the Bible from angles that are … [Read more...]
The historical Jesus
Nearly a decade ago, an article in Popular Mechanics reported that forensic scientists had reconstructed the “real face of Jesus.” Their reconstruction differed sharply from the typical portraits of Jesus that portrayed Christ with graceful features, light skin and flowing, brown hair. Instead, these scientists gave Jesus large dark eyes, black hair and tawny skin; bushy eyebrows and a short, frizzed moustache, beard and hair; as well as strong cheek bones and a bulbous nose. However … [Read more...]
Marriage suffers another blow with polygamy ruling
As most Americans were thinking thoughts of Christmas cheer, a federal judge in Utah dropped a bomb on the institution of marriage, striking down the most crucial sections of the Utah statute outlawing polygamy. Dec. 13, Judge Clark Waddoups of the United States District Court in Utah ruled that Utah’s anti-polygamy law is unconstitutional, violating the free exercise clause of the First Amendment as well as the guarantee of due process. In one sense, the decision was almost inevitable, … [Read more...]
Patterson inerrancy debates revived
Keith Collier/SBTS FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) – During the tumultuous period of the 1980s and 1990s within the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), Paige Patterson, then-president of the Criswell College, was at the forefront of the struggle over biblical inerrancy between theological conservatives and moderates. Two significant debates occurred between Patterson and moderate leaders in 1981 – one with Cecil Sherman on Feb. 11 and the other with Kenneth Chafin on June 6. Jason Duesing, … [Read more...]
Do you believe that Mary is the mother of God?
Do you believe that the virgin Mary is the mother of God? Baptists have prudently avoided describing Mary in this way, since the biblical writers never call her the “mother of God” and since this description has too often led to an idolatrous adoration of Mary. Nevertheless, this question goes to the heart of what we celebrate during the Christmas season – namely, the birth of Jesus Christ, who was both fully God and fully man. Let me explain. In the first five centuries following … [Read more...]
10 truths about the return of Jesus
Few passages of Scripture cause more controversy among evangelical Christians than Rev. 20:1-10, in which John mentions a 1,000-year period six times. The main point of debate is whether the “millennium” should be understood literally or figuratively. Generally, those who believe the 1,000 years are literal and in the future are called premillennialists. They look for Christ to return and establish a “millennial kingdom,” or a reign of 1,000 years, after which He puts down Satan’s final … [Read more...]
