BOLIVAR (SBU) – When projects coordinated through Southwest Baptist University’s Center for Global Connections were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, local ministry opportunities became a larger focus for staff and students. “It’s not a matter of where we’re going to minister,” said Diana Gallamore, director of the Center for Global Connections and travel stewardship. “It’s a matter of where God is leading us.” Because of the comprehensive training process students must complete … [Read more...]
Family embraces truth about autism
NEW BLOOMFIELD – While the rest of the world might look at Audie the Giraffe and see a cute stuffed animal tattered from years of snuggles, 8-year-old Ezra Bertram sees Audie as much more. “Ezra was diagnosed with autism when he was four years old,” said his mother, Christa Bertram, member of Concord Baptist Church in Jefferson City and co-author of Audie Embraces Different, a children’s book about what it means to embrace autism as part of God’s design. “When Ezra was around kindergarten … [Read more...]
MBCollegiate intern spearheads partnership with Disaster Relief efforts in St. Joseph
ST. JOSEPH – Disaster relief in the middle of a pandemic is no easy feat, but disasters don’t go on lockdown. On July 21, the south end of St. Joseph experienced flash flooding after receiving five inches of rain, affecting hundreds of residents in the Southside area. “It’s already a much more impoverished area,” says Isaac Whitman, a senior at Missouri Western. “It’s very blue collar. Historically, that area has been closed off to churches and ministries.” Of the roughly 130 homes that … [Read more...]
Strasburg Baptist sees growth amid COVID-19 pandemic
STRASBURG – God is able to do what He wants in his time, even if a worldwide pandemic is occurring. Take Strasburg Baptist Church here, for example. Pastor Stephan Albin has seen an increase in attendance since May, when the church reopened after COVID-19 precautions. “We’ve averaged about 100 and have a lot of young families. We started a revitalization program three-and-a-half years ago. I was bi-vocational for two years, and then in February I became full-time,” Albin said. The … [Read more...]

DR childcare adjusts to meet needs amid COVID-19 crisis
ST. CHARLES – For several years, Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief has handled the annual meeting childcare. This year, 2020, was the same in several respects: Steele, the 10-year old Labra-doodle dog was present; Disaster Relief staff brought toys, crafts, hands-on activities and clever games. There was one significant difference this year over last year: COVID-19 precautions. "We had 24 children on Monday. That’s less than we’ve had in the past. Last year, we had almost 50 children,” said … [Read more...]

Women in attendance were first treated to a fabulous meal and then entertained with worship music by Chris and Rebecca Perstrope of Connect Church of Fenton. FORT LEONARD WOOD – The Fort Leonard Wood Army base here is a hub for military training that sees thousands of new soldiers pass through the gates each year. Army Chaplain Bryan Hensley, a Missouri native and graduate of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, sees it as his mission to sow spiritual seeds in the lives of new soldiers. One of the greatest challenges these warriors face, according to Hensley, is the isolation that comes with military life. Having himself served in the … [Read more...]
