JEFFERSON CITY – The 2018 Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Great Commission Conference enters its second year with a new name and broader focus. This annual event aims to encourage, equip, and challenge Missouri Baptists as they seek to see lives and communities transformed with the gospel. The Great Commission Conference is scheduled Feb. 22-24 at First Baptist Church, Harvester. The unifying theme this year is “Re:concile – ambassadors of hope for transformation.” The theme, drawn from … [Read more...]
Prayers, pro-life bills and Good Samaritans
A reproduction of Arnold Friberg’s iconic painting of General George Washington kneeling in prayer in the snow at Valley Forge hangs over my desk. The original hangs in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. I love Friberg’s painting because it reminds us that we must pray and ask God to heal and bless our land. Ever since our nation’s founding, America’s leaders have prayed for Divine guidance. Even today, with Christianity seemingly losing influence over American society, many … [Read more...]
Lawmakers called to be humble
JEFFERSON CITY – In what has become a January tradition in the Capital City, many of the state’s government leaders gathered at Concord Baptist Church here Jan. 3 to be prayed over by Missouri Baptists. Elected and appointed officials from the three branches of state government, their staffs and families were present at the non-partisan, non-political service as Col. Gary Gilmore, a former Missouri Baptist pastor and the Missouri National Guard Joint Forces Chaplain, challenged the 99th … [Read more...]
Plan B no longer necessary for church Cooperative Program budgeting
JEFFERSON CITY – Last month, as Missouri Baptist churches received their remittance forms for Cooperative Program (CP) and designated giving in 2018, church leaders noticed something different. Starting Jan. 1, 2018, there is no longer the option to give to CP through Plan A or Plan B. That’s because messengers at the 2017 Annual Meeting approved a 2018 budget that no longer allocates a portion of CP funding for “agency restoration.” And that’s good news for Missouri Baptists, according … [Read more...]
Mo. Baptists celebrate 200 years: Missouri Baptists establish Will Mayfield College
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the seventh of several articles commemmorating Baptist history in Missouri, written by members of the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Historical Commission. I have pastored in Southeast Missouri for over fifty years. I grew up in Jackson, MO and united with the First Baptist Church when I was twelve. Our R.A. (Royal Ambassador) group would visit the old cemetery at the Old Bethel location. I had heard much about Old Bethel. I knew that Old Bethel was the first … [Read more...]

Fund future ministry
I have been asked more than once, “Why?” “Why did I leave the best church in the world (with the best preaching by the way) to take a position with the Missouri Baptist Foundation?” “Why did I leave Branson?” I mean, it is Branson, for goodness sake, with Silver Dollar City just down the road, lots of lakes and trees and hills, and the land of outlet shopping malls? “Why would I uproot my family after ten years of developing deep and meaningful relationships?” On many levels, I admit, … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist Foundation’s trustees commit $100,000 grant to help churches build endowments
JEFFERSON CITY (MBF) – At their Dec. 8th meeting in Jefferson City, Mo, the Foundation board, elected by the Missouri Baptist Convention, met and affirmed its commitment of serving Missouri Baptists. The board set aside $100,000 of grant money to help churches create, develop and grow their own endowment through the Power of Five program. The program allows for the Foundation to match, dollar for dollar, the first $5,000 an MBC church sets aside to create an endowment fund. These funds … [Read more...]
Celebrating 200 years of Mo. Baptist history
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the sixth of several articles commemorating Baptist history in Missouri, written by members of the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Historical Commission. As we celebrate 200 years of Missouri Baptist History it’s amazing to see how Baptists migrated across Missouri through the development of associations and church plants. In the 1840’s the west central part of Missouri was mainly plains and prairie without a large population. Several Baptist Churches were planted in … [Read more...]
Rock & Roll church, historic Red Star merge
CAPE GIRARDEAU – To say God is doing a new thing with two merged churches is an understatement. The former Rock and Roll Church merged with the historic Red Star Church in March to become the Church of the Rescued and Redeemed. Pastor Billy Garner said the former Rock and Roll church met for seven-and-a-half years in different Cape storefronts and in his home. “We prayed for a building for a few years. Nothing,” Garner said. “The spirit led me to make some hard choices in our music … [Read more...]
