Prayer, deadbeat parents, hunting human traffickers
In recent years, I have had the privilege of praying at a variety of events at the State Capitol. Most have been traditional services, like the National Day of Prayer held on the first Thursday in May. Others have been in more private settings with individual lawmakers and staffers who work at the State Capitol. But I have to say I have never had the privilege of praying at an event quite like the “Keep Faith in America” service held Jan. 17 in The Rotunda of the State Capitol. What made … [Read more...]
Pro-Life advocate Bonnie Lee gives voice to the voiceless
COLUMBIA – The abdominal bleeding wouldn’t stop and she was running a fever of 104. The landlord knew the ordeal her young tenant had been through at Planned Parenthood, so she called somebody who knew more about post-abortion health concerns than she did. After a few more phone calls and questions, Bonnie Lee was able to get in touch with her. “Am I dying?” the scared young woman asked Lee. She told Lee how she called the nurse practitioner at Planned Parenthood and was told she may have … [Read more...]

MBC sends aid to hurricane victims in Texas
On Dec. 11, 2017, John Yeats, executive director of the MBC presented a check for victim relief to James W. (Jim) Richards, executive director of the Southern Baptist of Texas Convention. When Hurricane Harvey slammed into the SE Texas coast and produced unprecedented damage and historical flooding, Missouri joined other state Disaster Relief teams to immediately respond to the needs. During that time, Missouri Baptists gave over $330,000 to DR and $250,000 of that amount was targeted for … [Read more...]

Prayers, pro-life bills and Good Samaritans
A reproduction of Arnold Friberg’s iconic painting of General George Washington kneeling in prayer in the snow at Valley Forge hangs over my desk. The original hangs in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. I love Friberg’s painting because it reminds us that we must pray and ask God to heal and bless our land. Ever since our nation’s founding, America’s leaders have prayed for Divine guidance. Even today, with Christianity seemingly losing influence over American society, many … [Read more...]
Lawmakers called to be humble
JEFFERSON CITY – In what has become a January tradition in the Capital City, many of the state’s government leaders gathered at Concord Baptist Church here Jan. 3 to be prayed over by Missouri Baptists. Elected and appointed officials from the three branches of state government, their staffs and families were present at the non-partisan, non-political service as Col. Gary Gilmore, a former Missouri Baptist pastor and the Missouri National Guard Joint Forces Chaplain, challenged the 99th … [Read more...]
Plan B no longer necessary for church Cooperative Program budgeting
JEFFERSON CITY – Last month, as Missouri Baptist churches received their remittance forms for Cooperative Program (CP) and designated giving in 2018, church leaders noticed something different. Starting Jan. 1, 2018, there is no longer the option to give to CP through Plan A or Plan B. That’s because messengers at the 2017 Annual Meeting approved a 2018 budget that no longer allocates a portion of CP funding for “agency restoration.” And that’s good news for Missouri Baptists, according … [Read more...]
