AUGUSTA, Ga. – Hurricane Helene was described by one official as a 400-mile-wide tornado, … which isn’t too far from reality. So, even though Asheville, N.C., has gotten much of the media’s attention, there’s been no less damage in neighboring states. That’s certainly the case in Augusta, Georgia — just 180 miles from Asheville — where volunteers with Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (MODR) have been working since Sept. 26. “I would describe it as one big debris field,” said Toby Tucker, … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist churches to celebrate Cooperative Program Month in October
JEFFERSON CITY – When you give to your church, you provide foster homes for children, rescue women from human trafficking, support survivors of disasters, start new churches, advance Christian education, offer compassionate care to the elderly, keep roughly 9,000 full-time missionaries on the field, train the next generation of Southern Baptist leaders … and that’s just for starters. Through the Cooperative Program, your tithes and offering extend beyond the reach of your local church. … [Read more...]

Missouri DR teams respond to Hurricane Francine
BATON ROUGE, La. (MODR) – Even though Hurricane Francine quickly subsided to a tropical storm after it made landfall in Louisiana, that doesn’t mean it didn’t have a devastating impact on hundreds of southern Louisiana residents. Having come onshore as a Category II hurricane on Sept. 11, it still left hundreds of people without power or with damage to homes and property. In response, Missouri Disaster Relief (MODR) teams arrived in Louisiana within 24 hours of landfall with two of the … [Read more...]

ST. CHARLES – Messengers representing churches affiliated with the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) are gathering Oct. 28-29 at the St. Charles Convention Center for their 190th annual meeting. The theme of this year’s meeting is “My Story for His Glory,” taken from Isaiah 48:10-11, which reads, “Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. For My own sake, for My own sake, I will act; For how can my name be profaned? And I will not give … [Read more...]
Denman sells classic car to provide skid steer for MODR, Baptist Builders projects
INDEPENDENCE – Bill Denman retired from construction work in his early 60s. He had used heavy equipment machinery to build water and sewer lines most of his adult life. First he was an operator and then a foreman. He worked hard. Retirement was good. He picked up a hobby as he bought a classic car and began entering it in car show competitions. It was a 1938 Ford Coupe, and Denman kept it shining as he showed it off in car shows. It was a fun hobby. But he also got involved in … [Read more...]
MODR interns log many miles in summer service
JEFFERSON CITY (MODR) – It was back in 1979 when country music star Willie Nelson recorded a song called “On the Road Again.” Today, some 45 years later, the 2024 Missouri Baptist Collegiate Disaster Relief student intern team can certainly relate. This summer, Aaron Werner, Disaster Relief Collegiate Coordinator, and his 12 interns have been sent to Sikeston (twice), Doniphan, and St. Louis, Mo., as well as Spencer, Iowa (twice), Houston, Texas, and Ruidoso, N.M. For Sikeston and … [Read more...]
Children from FBC Chillicothe raise nearly $500 for Missouri DR during VBS
CHILLICOTHE – The Vacation Bible School (VBS) held at First Baptist Church Chillicothe went beyond just studying Bible stories, the boys and girls learned how to apply what they learned through giving. Giving to missions is a tradition for the children attending VBS in Chillicothe. This year, they collected almost $500 for the Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief effort. “We’ve always selected local, home or international missions to support with the offering,” Tena Eggers, member and VBS … [Read more...]
Missouri Disaster Relief’s ADA shower trailer proves it’s value following Iowa floods
SPENCER, Iowa (MODR) – Anyone who has ever used a Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief shower trailer knows the routine is to leave your shoes on the steps so that everyone knows that shower is in use. Being based in a trailer, though, the key word is “steps” … and not everyone can climb steps. That’s why Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief invested in an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant shower trailer this past year, which offers both shower access and laundry facilities to those … [Read more...]
Missouri Disaster Relief responds to recent flooding in Iowa
SPENCER, Iowa (MODR) – It’s a sad case of irony that following a disastrous flood, there’s still a need for more water. That was certainly the case in Spencer, Iowa, after the area received nearly 16 inches of rain over three days in late June, flooding nearly 500 homes, or roughly 40 percent of the town. Granted, there was plenty of bottled water available after most utilities in the city were cut off. The needs that involved water that weren’t readily available, though, were showers and … [Read more...]

MODR Collegiate interns hit the ground running
JEFFERSON CITY (MODR) – There’s an old saying that “many hands make light work.” The idea is that a large task is generally made easier by many hands shouldering the same burden. Consequently, the 12 extra set of hands provided by the 2024 Missouri Baptist Collegiate Disaster Relief team have been invaluable this year, even if the load hasn’t always been light. “We started right after Memorial Day with 13 students,” said Aaron Werner, leader of the collegiate team and Missouri Baptist … [Read more...]
