I don’t believe it’s true, but someone once told me that a house perpetually and perfectly well-kept is a sign of an “uninteresting” life. Again, not true. But for people who believe it, I might be one of the most fascinating people they’ll ever meet. Sometimes, to get inspired to get my house in order, I look up cleaning and organizing tips on Pinterest. Next thing I know, I’m thinking about D-I-Y-ing something amazing. It has nothing whatsoever to do with cleaning my house, but still. … [Read more...]
The Book of Jude: Who are you to judge?
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the last in a series of excerpts from the new MBC resource, “The Last Apologist: A Commentary on Jude for Defenders of the Christian Faith,” available at mobaptist.org/apologetics. Jude describes certain false teachers as “merely natural, not having the Spirit” (v. 19). He seems to be stating that these professing Christians are unbelievers. How can he make such a judgment? Doesn’t Jesus say, “Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged” (Matt. 7:1)? Isn’t God the … [Read more...]
The prophecy of Enoch in Jude
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the ninth in a series of excerpts from the new MBC resource, “The Last Apologist: A Commentary on Jude for Defenders of the Christian Faith,” available at mobaptist.org/apologetics. Near the end of Jude’s epistle, he quotes a prophecy from Enoch: “Look! The Lord comes with thousands of His holy ones to execute judgment on all ...” Nowhere in Scripture does Enoch’s prophecy appear, leading some to dispute the inspiration of Jude. After all, it is argued, if a … [Read more...]

The Book of Jude: Can apostates be Christians?
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the eighth in a series of excerpts from the new MBC resource, “The Last Apologist: A Commentary on Jude for Defenders of the Christian Faith,” available at mobaptist.org/apologetics. Of all the terms Jude uses to describe false teachers – dangerous reefs, waterless clouds, and wild waves of the sea, to name a few – he stops short of calling them apostates. Yet that is what they are. A closer look at the New Testament’s sparing use of this term may prove helpful, … [Read more...]
The Book of Jude: Who is Michael the archangel?
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the seventh in a series of excerpts from the new MBC resource, “The Last Apologist: A Commentary on Jude for Defenders of the Christian Faith,” available at mobaptist.org/apologetics. Jude 9 offers one of the few references in Scripture to Michael the archangel. He is the only archangel named in the Bible, and his name means, “Who is like God?” Michael is introduced in Dan. 10:13 as “one of the chief princes.” He helps another angel, who has been battling the … [Read more...]

When angels desert
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the sixth in a series of excerpts from the new MBC resource, “The Last Apologist: A Commentary on Jude for Defenders of the Christian Faith,” available at mobaptist.org/apologetics. The identity of certain angels in Jude 6 is a matter of much debate. Unlike Satan and most demons, who roam the earth in search of mischief, these angels are kept “with eternal chains in darkness for the judgment of the great day, angels who did not keep their own position but deserted … [Read more...]
Living between the times
Someone once told me that all crazy women have super-thin eyebrows. I don’t see how I could even begin to argue with that logic. So I pencil. And I pencil strong. I feel I have a lot to prove. That’s one reason doing makeup in the car is such risky business. One hard stop and a gal could end up with a seriously high eyebrow. No one could ever be as astonished as that kind of brow implies. And please excuse me if the humor here is a bit…ah…highbrow. The other day, even full-well … [Read more...]

Praying together at church, home
Hill, Megan. Praying Together: The Priority and Privilege of Prayer in Our Homes, Communities, and Churches. Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2016. 158 pages. $12.99. I was thirteen when my family started attending church, and my parents went all-in. We didn’t just go to church on Sunday mornings, but on Sunday nights and Wednesday nights as well. Wednesday nights were church-wide prayer services. You were handed a prayer list when you entered, and then my pastor would take prayer … [Read more...]
Bonhoeffer Project emphasizes discipleship
OSAGE BEACH – Dietrich Bonhoeffer – the philosopher, pastor, spy and martyr, famously said, “Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ.” The author of the book, “The Cost of Discipleship,” believed that unless one followed Christ in a serious fashion, it was to cheapen the grace of God. And now his name is headlining an effort to ensure churches in Missouri and beyond do not forget the value of discipleship in the church. Created by Bill Hull, The … [Read more...]
