JEFFERSON CITY – A small crowd of about 50 on the Missouri Capitol front lawn joined Christians across the U.S. and 32 foreign countries Sept. 26 in praying for and remembering American citizen and pastor Saeed Abedini and the persecuted church. It was the two-year anniversary of Abedini’s imprisonment in Iran on charges of threatening national security by planting house churches there years earlier. While in prison, he has received inadequate medical care and faced beatings and death … [Read more...]
Pathway releases iPhone app
Missouri Baptists no longer have to watch their mailbox or check web for news, features and opinion about Kingdom work in the state; with a new iPhone app, The Pathway is now in their pocket. “There are very few Christian news apps in the App store right now,” said Kenny McCune, The Pathway’s webmaster and developer of the app. “We have a real chance to take control of that market.” The app offers everything the newsjournal’s website offers, just optimized for the iPhone with easy … [Read more...]
Laclede Association partners with NAMB in East St. Louis
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – It’s easy to forget about the “other” St. Louis on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, but the churches of Laclede Baptist Association have seen Kingdom results in East St. Louis as part of the North American Mission Board’s (NAMB) Send initiative. Seventeen volunteers from seven churches in the association partnered with Light of Christ Church in East St. Louis in late July. The weeklong ministry project focused on Vacation Bible School, electrical repairs … [Read more...]
Crossroads youth live out Acts 1:8 over summer
MOBERLY – Summer is supposed to be teenagers’ time off, but for a group of students from Crossroads Baptist Association it has been go go go. Bonnie Carter has been leading the association’s student summer missions team for nine years, and this summer has led ten students from around the area on mission locally, in Branson, Omaha, Neb. and Winnipeg, Canada. Nine are high school students, and one is a collegiate summer missionary through the Missouri Baptist Convention. “I absolutely … [Read more...]
MBCH: Cultural shifts could be future concern
BRIDGETON – The Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) would increasingly rely on its endowment if MBCH president Russell Martin gets his way. Such a move would allow MBCH to rely less and less on funding through contracts from the state of Missouri should there become a time that cultural shifts or legal challenges mean they can no longer receive state funds. Martin made the remarks at the July 22 board meeting at the MBCH main campus in Bridgeton. The third largest care provider in … [Read more...]
Heavy hauler to Disaster Relief heavyweight
TRIMBLE – Ten years ago, Mike Beasley never could have imagined the ministry God had in store for this car-hauling truck driver. After retiring in 2006, the member of Trimble Baptist Church decided to be productive with his time and volunteer with Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief (DR) after an ice storm in Springfield. But he was turned away because he wasn’t trained. “I came home and talked with my wife and said we needed to get trained,” he said. “We didn’t plan on getting in too … [Read more...]
Retired couple hits the streets with Bibles
TROY – “It’s easy to talk to people about Jesus.” That’s the advice from Jeanette Price, who, along with her husband, Bill, has led First Baptist Church, Troy, in distributing 3,000 Bibles in their community since the spring. The church’s project, a pilot for the statewide “Light Up Missouri” campaign to give away a million Bibles, is known as “528.” It’s a play on the prefix of Troy’s phone numbers and a reference to Acts 5:28, which is part of a passage where the disciples are spreading … [Read more...]

Pro-life, religious liberty bills on Gov.’s desk
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri will likely become just the third state in the United States to require a 72-hour waiting period before an abortion as a pro-life and pro-religious liberty bill make it out of the legislature in the session’s final days. The 72-hour waiting period measure, HB1307, passed the Missouri Senate 22-9 May 13 and sailed through the House the next day with a vote of 111-39. It’s now in the hands of Gov. Jay Nixon, said Kerry Messer, founder of the Missouri Family Network … [Read more...]
College students join DR ranks

ORRICK – It was far from the largest storm, but an EF-2 tornado damaged nearly every structure in the small town of Orrick east of Kansas City, including tearing the roofs off First Baptist Church’s parsonage May 10. The city has asked Missouri Baptists’ Disaster Relief to coordinate the recovery effort of several agencies as the community moves forward. First Baptist’s pastor, Matt Simpson, saw the tornado headed toward the community that afternoon and retreated to a basement closet with … [Read more...]
