JEFFERSON CITY – Saying the time has come for Christians to stand up and be counted, Mark Snowden brought a message from Daniel 3 to the steps of the State Capitol as one of many National Day of Prayer events across Missouri May 1. Snowden, evangelism/discipleship strategist for the Missouri Baptist Convention and an expert in “Bible storying,” told the small crowd that braved the rainy, windy weather the familiar account of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. It’s been retold many times, but … [Read more...]
Documentary on Joplin Tornadoes
JOPLIN – Where is God in the midst of a storm? Specifically, where was God in the 2011 EF5 tornado that killed 158 people and caused more than a billion dollars in damage in Joplin? What about the 2013 EF5 tornado that killed 24 and inured nearly 400 in Moore, Okla. last year? A new documentary, “Where Was God? Stories of Hope After the Storm,” attempts to answer that question. During an interview with The Pathway, Oklahoma film maker Chris Forbes said the short answer is that He was … [Read more...]
9,700 believers added to rolls last year
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptist churches baptized 9,706 people from July 2012 to July 2013, which continues a slight downward trend over the past several years according to information reported in the Annual Church Profiles (ACP). But the news isn’t all bad, said Mark Snowden, evangelism/discipleship strategist for the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC). “Although it was disappointing to see a decline numerically, my greater concern is that our churches see these as answers to prayer,” … [Read more...]
Christian worldview called ‘map of reality’
HANNIBAL – As the first speaker at the 2014 Missouri Baptist Convention Worldview Conference April 3, Anthony Allen prefaced the day’s topics with a basic understanding of what a Christian worldview is. Allen, the president of Hannibal-LaGrange University, which hosted the conference, said a Christian worldview means the gospel has a bearing on every aspect of life, including culture. It is the idea behind Eph. 6:12: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, … [Read more...]
Holocaust survivor speaks at HLGU
HANNIBAL – Eva Mozes Kor doesn’t mind talking about the nine months she and her twin sister spent in Auschwitz during World War II. She openly shares about inhumane experiments by infamous Dr. Josef Mengele. She matter-of-factly tells of watching as other Jewish children were shot as the Allies drew closer to the concentration camp. But, all things considered, she’d prefer to talk about forgiveness. Kor spoke for nearly two hours at Hannibal-LaGrange University March 28 to a packed house … [Read more...]
Crouse sounds warning for marriage, sexual issues
HANNIBAL – Despite the persistent drumbeat that marriage is nothing more than an optional piece of paper, Janice Crouse told the crowd at the Missouri Baptist Convention Worldview Conference April 3 that the erosion of tradition marriage – especially since 1960 – is a major driving factor in many social ills plaguing the United States. Crouse, a speech writer for President George H. W. Bush, author, and the executive director of Concerned Women for America’s think tank, said that … [Read more...]
Review: ‘Noah’ drifts in sea of errors, but Christian themes float above the flood
Before I went to see the matinee of Darren Aronofsky’s new movie, Noah, I reread the biblical narrative. In the HCSB version, it’s just over 2,000 words and took me all of five minutes to finish. So how does a filmmaker – an atheist filmmaker – make a 138-minute $130 million-dollar blockbuster from such brief source material? The answer is that you throw the scripture into a blender and add a ton of filler. But although Aronofsky – who publicly said he set out to make the least biblical … [Read more...]

‘Son of God’ biblical, but short on art
The Bible has inspired some truly masterful works of art: Michelangelo’s “Pieta,” Handel’s “Messiah” and DaVinci’s “Last Supper” are but three masterpieces that show man at his cultural pinnacle with a biblical underpinning. Sadly, biblical art has slipped a little. “Son of God,” a new theatrical release edited together from snippets of “The Bible” miniseries that aired on the History Channel last spring, doesn’t rise to Da Vinci’s standards. To be honest, it doesn’t rise to Thomas … [Read more...]
ACLU attacks marriage in Missouri
KANSAS CITY – The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit Feb. 11 asking a state court judge to force Missouri to recognize same sex marriages of Missouri residents who were wed in states where it was lawful. While the lawsuit does not explicitly ask the court to nullify the Missouri Marriage Amendment, the legal argument used by the ACLU will inevitably lead to that result if the courts accept it, said attorney Mike Whitehead. “The eventual goal of this lawsuit is to … [Read more...]
Missouri’s Annie Armstrong goal $2M
JEFFERSON CITY – Easter is fast approaching, and that means it istime for the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering to support the efforts of the North American Mission Board (NAMB). Missouri Baptists have set a goal for the 2014 offering of $2 million. That is up from the $1.75 million goal last year, since Missourians blew by the goal and gave $2,002,727.17. The nationwide goal is $70 million for ministry across the country, including in Missouri. This year’s week of prayer for NAMB … [Read more...]
Baptist Builders gear up for spring projects
MOSBY – Volunteers made progress on First Baptist’s new building, but there’s still lots of work to be done, and the state’s Baptist Builders need more manpower to make it and other projects happen. “This is the first year for a long time that we have had so many opportunities for volunteer work teams in our churches across Missouri,” said Leighton Clemons, coordinator for Baptist Builders in the state. “There is a big interest in helping on a Baptist Builders project.” Baptist … [Read more...]
