HANNIBAL – The man who was TV’s “Hercules” and an atheist professor in the film “God’s Not Dead” spoke on faith, freedom, and hope at the Hannibal-LaGrange University annual booster banquet, Nov. 20. Kevin Sorbo talked about making faith-based films and his health struggle that almost killed strongman Hercules. He credits “an uptick in production quality and writing and cheaper cameras’ for increased popularity in faith-based films. Sorbo played Professor Radisson in “God’s Not Dead.” … [Read more...]
Mendacious ‘journalism’ targets Tebow, prayer
As someone who has worked in the newsrooms of three significant daily newspapers, I can testify to the lostness that exists. The lostness often surfaces as hostility and ridicule – especially toward Christianity. In recent days Christians have witnessed a pair of incidents that were contemptuous, even cruel. The first involved former football star and television sports analyst Tim Tebow, the son of Southern Baptist missionaries who attends First Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla. Tebow is … [Read more...]
Senate defunds abortion giant
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Senate passed a budget-related bill, Dec. 3, that challenges President Obama to carry out his promised veto to protect, in part, the country’s No. 1 abortion provider. Senators voted 52-47 in a nearly party-line roll call for a reconciliation measure that cuts 80 to 90 percent of federal funds in the next year for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and its affiliates. The legislation also repeals fundamental sections of the controversial 2010 … [Read more...]
‘Peace on Earth’ for Syrian refugees?
JEFFERSON CITY – As the debate heats up in the halls of government and social media, religious leaders come down on all sides of the question of what to do with thousands of Syrian refugees. Rob Phillips, the team leader for communications for the Missouri Baptist Convention, said the MBC does not take a position on refugee policy, but called on all sides in the debate to pray for the best possible outcome. “For peace in Syria and other war-torn countries, we should pray for wisdom for … [Read more...]
R-rated movies – a rising flood
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (BP) – Five movies opened during the same weekend recently and, though of different genres, all were rated R. It seems to be a trend. Last year, of the nine Oscar nominees for Best Picture, only three escaped an R rating — and just barely. Perhaps “trend” is the wrong word, as this decades-old direction toward harsher content seems to have become the norm. It’s one thing to endure crudity or obscenity in our daily lives (work, school, walking past others at the mall) … [Read more...]
35 new missionaries appointed by IMB
NEW ORLEANS (BP) – Joseph Somkhith* understands the plight of today’s 60 million refugees. He once lived as one. Somkhith was 10 years old when he and his brother fled Laos after a communist takeover in the mid-1970s. The two boys crossed the Mekong River into Thailand, facing what Somkhith described as “insecurity and violence” along the way. Nearly a year later, Somkhith’s family was reunited in a refugee camp in Thailand. “My family separated from each other for the sake of saving … [Read more...]
LifeWay reopens search for new headquarters
NASHVILLE (BP) – LifeWay Christian Resources is stepping away from the purchase of a 1.5-acre site in downtown Nashville to look at other sites for a new headquarters, LifeWay President Thom Rainer said in a letter to employees today (Nov. 16). Rainer said the Southern Baptist entity does intend to complete the sale of its 14.5-acre campus, also located in downtown Nashville. LifeWay’s bid for the 1.5-acre property was accepted in July for $12.7 million with a $4.9 million tax incentive, … [Read more...]
Political neutrality, sex and quizzy pollsters
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Public Religion Research Institute’s American Values Atlas estimates that about 64 percent of the total delegates in states with presidential primaries on or before March 8 will come from states with electorates that may be at least 50 percent evangelical. In Missouri it is believed to be around 60 percent evangelical in advance of the March 15 primary, with Southern Baptists representing the bulk of that vote. Yet we still have untold thousands who … [Read more...]
Sedalia couple in crosshairs of homosexual activist group, remain firm on marriage
SEDALIA – Josh and Sara Howell, Christian business owners here, are in the crosshairs of Missouri’s homosexual activist group, PROMO, for refusing to allow a same-sex couple to get married at their privately owned event venue, Heritage Ranch. Rachel Cathey and Beverly Vaughn, a same-sex couple planning to wed in 2016, visited Heritage Ranch earlier this year, but were informed by Sara Howell that the venue could not host same-sex weddings because of the owners’ Christian beliefs about … [Read more...]
An inside look at Huckabee by former Pathway contributor Scott Lamb
In 2007 Mike Huckabee went from being a relatively unknown governor to a nationally known politician, coming in second for the Republican nomination for President in 2008. Since that time he has hosted a weekly cable news show, written several books, and championed conservative values and causes. In May 2015 he announced that he was running for President again, and he’s currently in the midst of that campaign. While many politicians have similar experiences and accomplishments, what makes … [Read more...]
New Muppets ‘too toxic for children,’ PTC says
NASHVILLE (BP) — In a study of “The Muppets,” the Parents Television Council reports that the new TV show includes a preponderance of sexual innuendos and other offensive content not suited for children. The first four episodes of half-hour comedy featuring characters created by the late Jim Henson decades ago included adult-themed content every 3 minutes and 38 seconds, the PTC found. The PTC joins another critic of the series, the morality watchdog group One Million Moms, in saying the … [Read more...]
