UNIONVILLE – ‘Did you pack pool shoes with your swim clothes?” (yes). “Do you get your ball glove?” (yes Mom). “How about your horse? Did you pack a horse?” (huh?) It’s a rite of summer – kids packing their stuff for summer camp. But in a north Missouri summer camp you could pack a horse with you and it wouldn’t be out of place. Actually they will supply you with a horse to use if you don’t have your own horse at the annual Rodeo Bible Camp in Unionville. Held every summer for 9 years … [Read more...]
Man’s drive to share gospel fuels car show
HAZELWOOD – During a rainy week in St. Louis, the clouds separated and the sun shone long enough for Hazelwood Baptist Church to host its 16th annual Father’s Day car show under clear skies. Dan Herin, coordinator of the June 6 show, says the church has seen that weather pattern before. “We know the Lord’s in it. We’re taught to pray with intention and expectation. That’s what we did,” he said. “In years past He stopped the rain by Friday. The wind blew all night and the grass was … [Read more...]

According to the Annual Church Profile, Missouri Baptist churches reported 8,248 baptisms in 2014, a statistic that shows a drop from the 9,706 baptisms reported in 2013 and the 10,364 reported in 2012. This is in keeping with a nearly … [Read more...]
Bikers find lostness on I-29
FARGO, N.D. – Philip Dooley’s tires on his KTM 990 Adventure crunched over dirt roads, then glided softly through the grass as he stopped in front of the old, abandoned church house. Nestled in the hills of South Dakota’s Lake Traverse Indian Reservation, the house of worship had long been shuttered. “It’s the perfect illustration of why planting new churches is so important here,” said Dooley, the interim pastor of First Baptist Church, Gower, Mo., and part of the Missouri Baptist Biker … [Read more...]
Flying Wallenda driven by higher calling
FERGUSON – Eight generations of Tino Wallenda’s family have been in the same unusual business. “For two hundred years,” Wallenda told the men’s breakfast group at FBC Ferguson, “we’ve performed in the circus as acrobats, jugglers, horseback riders, clowns and aerialists.” The family is known as the Flying Wallendas for the dangerous tightrope act performed by the group. “Applause motivated my family in all of these performances,” he said. Now Wallenda is motivated by a higher … [Read more...]

KC ministry reaches trafficking victims
KANSAS CITY – Christine McDonald knew she needed help, but once again the system failed her. She didn’t have insurance and the pimp had her ID. “They also said they wouldn’t admit me to the treatment center unless I was obviously addicted to alcohol,” she said. “But I didn’t drink. I was addicted to crack cocaine and had been arrested multiple times for prostitution, but I didn’t drink. My mother was a drunk and I swore I would never be like my mother.” So, after being denied at the … [Read more...]
St. Louis church works to bridge racial divide
ST. LOUIS – Delmar Boulevard, also known as The Delmar Divide, crosses St. Louis from east to west and features million-dollar mansions directly to the south and poverty-stricken areas to its north. The neighborhood is also racially divided; south of Delmar is 70 percent white and north of Delmar is 98 percent black. But Missouri Baptist Convention Church Planter Todd Genteman believes that God can unite people divided by such natural barriers. That’s why Genteman, pastor of Apostles … [Read more...]
Ministry dresses sinners in Christ’s righteousness
KANSAS CITY – People in Kansas City have tossed away sin’s rags to put on the new clothing of righteousness found in Christ Jesus because of Garments of Praise, an area ministry that provides clothes for the needy. The ministry’s theme verse, Isaiah 61:3, talks of people exchanging an old life for new attire, and this is what those who serve with the ministry hope to see continually. During five road events held in roughly two years, Garments of Praise has distributed more than 54,000 … [Read more...]
