JEFFERSON CITY (Life News) – Missouri lawmakers passed a firmly pro-life budget May 9 that defunds abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood and provides support for moms and babies. St. Louis Public Radio reports the $28 billion budget is headed to Gov. Eric Greitens, who is pro-life. June 30 is the deadline for the governor’s signature. The abortion giant Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses in the state no longer will receive tax dollars through Medicaid or state programs … [Read more...]

Missouri Baptist Pathway Editor: ‘The government got it wrong with Dred Scott’
For reconciliation to be realized, the offending party must acknowledge one’s wrongdoing, stop doing it and ask the offended party for forgiveness. The offended party must then forgive. Of course, God made forgiveness an infinitely important ingredient by offering sinners grace – and the gift of eternal life through the penal substitutionary death of Jesus on Golgotha’s Hill. I pray that God’s example will inspire the government of Missouri to move the state forward as we strive for racial … [Read more...]
John Yeats: Virtuous words and the court of public opinion
Trevin Wax tells a compelling story about his Romanian father-in-law in “This is Our Time” (B&H, 2017). As a young man, his father-in-law was a Communist advocate. As many others in his national context, he was engaged in the demise of any form of organized faith. Under Communism, religious liberty experienced the boot of ideological expression. We know from non-redacted history of Romania how the Communist Party closed humanitarian ministries, eliminated all Christian education, and … [Read more...]
Nebraska, Tennessee defund Planned Parenthood
NASHVILLE (BP) – Nebraska and Tennessee this month joined more than a dozen states that have cut funding for abortion providers like Planned Parenthood, a pro-life campaign that has seen mixed results. Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts approved a budget that prohibits Title X funding from going to abortion providers, directing $1.9 million toward centers that neither refer for nor perform abortions. Use of federal funds to perform abortions or to fund entities that perform abortions is … [Read more...]

WASHINGTON (BP) – Southern Baptist chaplain Jerry Scott Squires is fighting a U.S. Army investigator’s charge of unlawful discrimination for refusing to preside over a marriage retreat including same-sex couples. But Squires followed federal law and Army and Southern Baptist Convention chaplaincy protocol when he rescheduled a Feb. 9 Strong Bonds marriage retreat in order to involve a non-SBC chaplain, thereby accommodating the attendance of a lesbian couple, First Liberty Institute said … [Read more...]

BOLIVAR – The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) has successfully gotten a “proselytizer” barred from a Missouri school district. The Winconsin-based atheist group objected to an invitation from Bolivar High School to Bob Holmes, the “one man volleyball team,” to give a demonstration of his particular volleyball skills presentation and a motivational message to its student body Feb. 20. Members of Agape Baptist Church in nearby Stockton – an independent Baptist congregation – were … [Read more...]
St. Louis and Martin Luther King Jr.
Earlier this month, along with other African American and Caucasian pastors from Saint Louis and East Saint Louis, I attended MLK50 in Memphis, TN, a conference designed to honor a monumental figure in American life, Dr. Martin Luther King. History tells us that Dr. King’s work brought him to St. Louis at least nine different times with his last speech being at Saint Louis University on October 12, 1964, just two days before he would win the Nobel Peace Prize. The MLK50 event was a … [Read more...]
China banning online Bible sales ‘absurd’
CHINA (BP) -- China is purportedly the largest publisher of Bibles in the world, but the communist nation has now apparently blocked online Bible purchases for its residents. Beginning last week, searches for Bibles at leading online retailers in China came up empty, according to reports from The New York Times and CNN. The reports indicate certain Bible studies or illustrated storybooks were available through searches. Two merchants told CNN the Bible could be purchased through … [Read more...]
Posthumous conception raises ‘host of ethical issues’
NASHVILLE (BP) -- The legal and moral propriety of conceiving a child with a dead person's egg or sperm is among the latest fronts being discussed in bioethics. In Ireland, legislation is under consideration that would permit reproductive cells from deceased individuals to be used by their spouses or partners to conceive children posthumously, according to media reports. The Irish legislature's Joint Committee on Health discussed the bill once in January and again in February, a … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptists remember, strive to live the ‘dream’
KANSAS CITY – On April 9, 1968, nearly a week after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated and on the day of his burial, riots broke out across Kansas City. At the time, Gary Jones was only 12 years old. But he recalls standing on the corner of 12th and Woodland, watching protesters march up the street. Suddenly, a shot was fired and a woman standing nearby threw Jones to the ground to save him. “It was such a frightening moment in my life,” Jones, now a Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) … [Read more...]
