BROOKEFIELD – One of the newest members of the Fellowship of Missouri Baptist Evangelists is Ron Adrian. But long before he joined the group, he was sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. “I’ve been with the Fellowship about a year, but I’ve been doing evangelism for a lot of years. I’ve been a pastor for a lot of years and evangelism has been a part of it all the time,” Adrian said. “Now I’ve gone into regular evangelism.” For about two years, when Adrian moved to Springfield after … [Read more...]
Acts 1:8 is basis for Canaan Baptist’s mission
ST. LOUIS – Canaan Baptist Church in St. Louis not only set Acts 1:8 as a mission focus verse, but the church with a Sunday attendance average of 575 practices this. Pastor Daniel Carr said the verse challenges believers to reach Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the earth. For Canaan, four major projects comprise the Jerusalem segment. “We’ve identified our Jerusalem as the greater St. Louis area. First, We did an Easter egg drop from a helicopter. We did this for … [Read more...]
New church plant plans to reach military families
KNOB NOSTER – To best understand the needs of the military, one needs military connections. That’s one reason Craig Coppenbarger is helping develop Valor Church near Whiteman Air Force Base near Knob Noster. “The military is its own culture, they have their own language. There are always common threads among the military,” Coppenbarger said. Coppenbarger was called to the ministry in high school, and served for a time with the Air Force. He had been a youth pastor at Second Baptist, … [Read more...]
640 nativity sets distributed among mourners
HANNIBAL – Beverly Sileven was known as a giving person who loved Christmas and patriotism. This Christmas, she gave away the bulk of her huge nativity set collection – posthumously. Actually, her family opted to give away Mrs. Sileven’s sets just before she died of brain cancer, Nov. 15, at age 76. “Her love language was giving money and gifts. She liked to make and give away crafty things,” said daughter Larinee Dennis, a Hannibal-LaGrange University employee. “She always spent time at … [Read more...]
Evangelism at center of Christmas season
NEW LONDON – Convicted by statistics shared at the Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting, Brian and Leslie Ninedorf decided to involve their church this advent season in remembering by action those who are without Christ. First Baptist, New Londo, where Brian pastors has passed out white “one-for-one” bracelets to remind the congregation to pray for one minute every day for one specific person’s soul until Christmas. “The genesis of it was in (MBC Executive Director) Dr. John Yeats … [Read more...]

Kevin Sorbo talked about making faith-based films and his health struggle that almost killed strongman Hercules. He credits “an uptick in production quality and writing and cheaper cameras’ for increased popularity in faith-based films. Sorbo played Professor Radisson in “God’s Not Dead.” … [Read more...]
Franks urges Missouri Baptists to move forward
SPRINGFIELD – To promote forward thinking, Neil Franks looked back. Franks, pastor of First Baptist, Branson, gave the president’s address at this year’s Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting, using a cleverly-filmed video and a throwback to his high school days to drive home his point. The video showed a man walking forward on a street, while the world moved in reverse around him. But then Franks showed the video the way it was filmed: the man walked backwards; he, not the people … [Read more...]
Pastors challenged to seek revival
SPRINGFIELD – Eight speakers challenged and encouraged attendees of the Missouri Baptist Pastors’ Conference, Oct. 26. Jeremy Roberts, The Church in the Highlands in Chattanooga TN pastor, admonished ministers not to compare themselves with others. “Stop feeling inferiority or superiority to others, but stand in the sufficiency of God,” Roberts said. He said the solution is to honor, magnify and glorify God, and be thankful. “(This) stops the focus on ourselves. It is a blessing to have our … [Read more...]
Acts 1:8 drives local, global missions at South Haven
SPRINGFIELD – Just before his ascension, Jesus charged his disciples to minister in the immediate area, the far edges of the earth, and everywhere in between. South Haven Baptist in Springfield has taken the charge to heart. “One of the things we adopted a few years ago was an Acts 1:8 strategy. My heart and the heart of the church is to take the gospel where the gospel isn’t. That’s really our main focus,” said pastor Ryan Palmer. For South Haven’s ‘Jerusalem,’ member Kathy Meyer said … [Read more...]
195 years later, church still serves
PIEDMONT – When membership falls to single digits, many churches consider shuttering the doors. This isn’t so for the Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in rural Piedmont, which will mark 195 years on September 20. “It’s just a little church out in the sticks in the Ozarks. The closest small town is seven miles away,“ said pastor Jimmy Lemonds, who began his pastorate August 2. “I had preached there before, and they had nine people. My first concern was, I wasn’t sure how long it … [Read more...]
Wayland churchgoer ministers in workplace
WAYLAND — Jeff Boyd doesn’t see his ministry as doing much for God. But he has seen trucker attitudes change when he can engage them in spiritual conversation. Boyd, a member of Southern Baptist Fellowship Church in Wayland, loads and unloads trucks and loads acid in railroad cars for Climax in Keokuk, Iowa, which produces molybdenum products for other metal manufacturers. He had put a Gideon’s bible on a table in the truck driver’s lounge some six years ago. One day it was gone and a … [Read more...]
Rock-N-Roll Church revs up ministry to bikers
CAPE GIRARDEAU — The Rock-N-Roll Church of Cape Girardeau freely admits it is different. A tagline on the church website reads: “This ain’t your grandma’s church.” It’s a church where rock and roll music is prevalent, and motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidsons are common. “People called us the Rock-N-Roll church,” Pastor Billy Garner said, adding the name stuck. On Sundays, the church praise and worship band Stronghold plays Christian rock songs. At other times and events, they play … [Read more...]
