KANSAS CITY – It’s a great view at Tower View Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. The congregation with a gospel-centered, and Christ-serving vision has been praying for other area congregations. This ministry for other local churches started in April 2015 when Pastor Darin Smith began ministering at Tower View. Initially prayers were random. Then in 2016, they began praying for their affiliated association and local congregations. “On the first Sunday in 2016, we started praying … [Read more...]

Greek refresher said to make sermons ‘exciting’
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- Especially in this information age, pastors and other seminary graduates have no excuse for letting their grasp of New Testament Greek slip away, say Greek scholars at multiple Southern Baptist Convention seminaries. Having a firm grasp of New Testament Greek was the emphasis of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary's Jan. 13-14 Alumni Academy. And it also has been a theme of publications by professors at other Southern Baptist Convention seminaries. "It's … [Read more...]

"I had the opportunity to serve in full-time church staff in the area. In early … [Read more...]
‘Redeeming anger, irritation’
Powlinson, David. Good & Angry: Redeeming Anger, Irritation, Complaining, and Bitterness. Greensboro, NC: New Growth, 2016. 26 pp. $19.99. Every one of us knows what it’s like to have our anger go bad. We get irritated and begin complaining, we pass judgment on people who don’t meet our standards, we seethe inside at some wrong we’ve experienced or blow up in a rage. We also know what it’s like to be on the receiving end of anger gone wrong, to be judged, yelled at, or ignored in a … [Read more...]
Out with venom, in with honey
Every time I’m reading something and find someone has misused words, I literally have a cow. (Literally? See what I did there?) Of course, I know it’s hypocritical of me to have any kind of “beef” over someone else’s word blunders (and yes, I’ll try ease up on the cow quips—moo-ving on). Personally, I’ve discovered the best way to proofread something is to click “send” first. Only then are you completely free to see the big, fat, glaring mistake. With the last book manuscript I sent in, … [Read more...]

The humanity of Jesus
Christians often find it necessary to defend the deity of Christ, especially in conversations with those who vigorously deny this biblical truth. For example, Muslims hold Jesus in high regard as a virgin-born, miracle-working, sinless prophet, but draw the line at the notion of a mere messenger being divine. Jehovah’s Witnesses, by comparison, grant Jesus the status of “mighty god,” a created archangel who is recreated as a man and then, after dying on a first-century torture stake, is … [Read more...]
Joplin schools reopen Bible study groups
JOPLIN – Bible study groups that were shut down by the Joplin School District here in early January have now resumed, according to the Joplin Globe. The school district suspended the Bible study groups, Jan. 6, after officials received a complaint from the Washington, D.C.-based American Humanist Association (AHA) last December. While investigating the complaint, they realized that the groups didn’t comply with current school board policies regarding student-initiated groups. While they … [Read more...]

Benefits of a lifelong marriage relationship
The Scriptures are clear about the importance of a marriage that is a life-long, loving relationship with one man and one woman. However, in the hustle of life, very few of us pause to identify the benefits of a long-haul marriage. To help illustrate the benefits, read the following story. Les and Leslie Parrott tell the story of Isidor and Ida Strauss, an immigrant couple who worked hard and saved their money to sail to the “New World,” the United States of America. When they arrived, … [Read more...]
