SPRINGFIELD – The International Mission Board’s Nik Ripken opened a window on the realities facing persecuted believers worldwide and on the way those believers view American Christianity during the Missouri Baptist Convention annual meeting, Oct. 28. “There is no free church and persecuted church,” Ripken said. “There is just the church. And it is always persecuted and it is always free. And when any part of your body is hurting and you’re not aware of it, and you’re not concerned about … [Read more...]

Bradford Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project. Wilcox, who serves as associate professor of sociology at the University of Virginia, is also a keynote speaker at the 2016 Worldview Conference at Hannibal-LaGrange University, April 14. ‘Woodlawn’ tackles racism, revival
HOLLYWOOD (Christian Examiner) – The best sports movies aren’t even about sports. Instead, the best sports movies use sports as a backdrop to tell the story of something far more significant and important, something that even non-sports fans can embrace. Such is the case with “Woodlawn” (PG), which recounts the true story of a newly integrated high school football team in Birmingham, Ala., that is the source of racial tension until most of the players accept Christ and spark a city-wide … [Read more...]

Proposing a religious liberty bill for Missouri
As attacks on our religious liberty have intensified in recent months, Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Director John Yeats asked me to spearhead a statewide multi-faith initiative that would further secure religious liberty for Missourians. For the past three months I have had the privilege of being a part of a broad coalition of church leaders, legal scholars, State Capitol staffers, lawmakers, pro-family and religious liberty groups in crafting legislation that would respect and … [Read more...]
MBCH considers partnering with new ministries
BRIDGETON – Sometimes you look for opportunities to minister, and sometimes the opportunities seek you out. In recent days three new opportunities to expand the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home’s (MBCH) reach have knocked on MBCH’s door, and were discussed at the agency’s trustee meeting Oct. 13 at the main Bridgeton campus. The first is the Branches at Brookline, a residential facility for developmentally disabled adults in Republic. The board of Southwest Special Cares, which operates … [Read more...]
Religious liberty challenge facing Missouri Baptists, faith groups
JEFFERSON CITY – It is coming to Missouri and if its citizens do not act soon, religious liberty for everyone will likely face an unprecedented threat. Last month the Oregon Department of Labor ordered Melissa and Aaron Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery, to pay a $135,000 fine because they refused to bake a “wedding” cake for two lesbians. It is not because they hate homosexuals. In fact they have repeatedly stated and demonstrated their love for homosexuals. The state is … [Read more...]

The Worth of a Child
Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. – Psalm 127: 3-5 A little boy named John was born into a family that did not attend church. When he was old enough to go to Sunday School, a Sunday School teacher picked him up each Sunday and took him with her to Sunday School and church. When the church had picnics, the teacher always took the … [Read more...]
