(WNS) – Fifty years ago, only about 8 percent of babies in the United States were born to single women. Today that figure is over 40 percent. Although sociologists point to many reasons for the disturbing trend, a new study just presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association, indicates the huge increase of babies born out-of-wedlock may, at least in part, be due to the way in which mainstream media portrays the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Telling the truth in a world of utter distrustfulness
Journalists, and particularly Christian journalists, must tell the truth. If one does not tell the truth, one loses credibility. No credibility, no readers. No readers, out of business. However, telling the truth is not enough. Twelve times, the Bible reminds us to not only tell the truth, but to guard the truth and it does so many times and in many ways (Ex. 23:1, Lev. 19:11-16, Lev. 19:35-36; Ps. 82:2-3, Prov. 23:10, Prov. 31:8-9, Rom. 12:9-10, 2 Cor. 12:20, Eph. 4:25, 2 Tim. 3:3, Jas. … [Read more...]
Pro-lifers grieve PPFA anniversary
WASHINGTON (BP) – Planned Parenthood – America's leading abortion provider – marked its 100th anniversary Oct. 16, receiving praise from the current president and protest from pro-life advocates. The Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) observed its centennial with an event at the City Hall of New York. PPFA's affiliates perform more than 320,000 abortions a year at the same time the organization and its affiliates receive about $550 million annually in government grants and … [Read more...]
P&G refuses to join fight against religious liberty
CINCINNATI, Ohio (WNS) – Procter & Gamble shareholders shot down a proposal last week to join the surge of corporate backlash against religious freedom and restroom laws. NorthStar Asset Management, which owns $2,000 worth of P&G stock, proposed at an investor meeting the company should join Apple, PayPal, Disney, and others in the political fight against religious freedom laws in Mississippi and Tennessee and should take a stand against North Carolina’s transgender restroom … [Read more...]
Artificial intelligence spawns ethical concerns
NASHVILLE (BP) – The ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) has drawn comments from the White House and British House of Commons in recent weeks, along with a nonprofit organization established by Amazon, Google, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft. Now, Baptist computer scientists have called Christians to join the discussion. Louise Perkins, professor of computer science at California Baptist University, told Baptist Press she is “quite worried” at the lack of an ethical code related to AI. The … [Read more...]
Power of a metaphor: Church-state separation
My friend, Dr. Michael Gabbert, senior pastor of Evergreen Baptist Church in the Tulsa, Okla., area, is an excellent researcher. He developed a series of insights in response to those who ask the question, “Pastor, who do we vote for?” Perhaps his careful insights will encourage you to speak out in the days leading up to decision day on Nov. 8: Consider Thomas Jefferson—political theorist, statesman, diplomat. He was a scientist, an inventor, an architect and a farmer. He was also the … [Read more...]
MBTS’s Robin Hadaway: ‘The best of 5 choices’ in 2016 Election
KANSAS CITY – It has become clear this week that there are no good candidates for President in this election cycle. In fact, some might say, “‘so-and-so’ is especially ‘no good’.” A voter has basically five choices. The first choice is to not vote at all. This form of protest “voting” is often practiced in non-democratic societies where elections are rigged or where certain segments of a population are not permitted to run for office. Reports indicate that many did not vote in the recent … [Read more...]
Paige Patterson on 2016 Election: WWII German troops offer lesson in choosing hope
What do April 30, 1945, and Nov. 8, 2016, have in common? The first date was the culmination of World War II. On that fateful day, Adolf Hitler apparently shot himself in the mouth as Russian soldiers moved in on his compound. But in the midst of all that tragedy, an interesting saga played itself out in Germany. Before Hitler realized that he had lost the war, almost all other Germans knew it well. The Russians were closing from the East, and the Americans came from the West. The dilemma … [Read more...]
Prayer urged as amendments are considered
JEFFERSON CITY – Conservative organizations are split regarding some state constitutional amendments that Missourians will be asked to consider in the voting booth, Nov. 8. But one organization has recommended a simple strategy for tackling these ballot initiatives: Vote “No” on Amendments 1-4 and Proposition A, and “Yes” on 6. Whatever voters decide to do, Missouri Southern Baptist leaders are calling them to do so prayerfully. “I would encourage everyone to join me in prayerfully … [Read more...]
Internet change could threaten religious liberty
WASHINGTON (BP) – When the U.S. government relinquishes control of a nonprofit organization that oversees internet domain names, a California Baptist University software engineering professor says, the potential for religious liberty violations could increase. Since 1998, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has coordinated and administered internet domain names, with oversight from the U.S. Department of Commerce. But as of Oct. 1, when the government’s contract … [Read more...]
Roy Moore suspension said to ignore ‘rule of law’
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) – Although the nine-judge panel charged with trying Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore did not achieve the unanimous ruling required to remove him from office, it suspended him without pay for the remainder of his term in what Moore’s attorney Mat Staver called a violation of state law. “To suspend Chief Justice Moore for the rest of his term is the same as removal,” Staver, founder and chairman of the nonprofit legal group Liberty Counsel, said in a news release. The … [Read more...]
Gift of Down Syndrome sends pastor down path of unexpected ministry
LEE’S SUMMIT – Jesus probably would have looked dapper in a bow tie, but then, He didn’t need help standing out from the crowd. “Every day someone stops me and talks to me about the tie,” said Nathan Begnaud, owner of Madison Street Leather and pastor of Redemption Church here. “It turns into a gospel presentation as I share about the idea, about Maxwell, and about my faith in Christ. This week I had three such opportunities in the same day.” Begnaud handcrafts leather bow ties that he … [Read more...]
