DIAMOND – Step aside, Flat Stanley. Flat Jesus is here. When Ron Crow, pastor of First Baptist Church, Diamond, was trying to think of a way to keep kids engaged with the church when families could not gather in person, his mind went to his two daughters. “When things started closing down, I told them I was burdened for our children. ‘What can I do for the kids?’ They said, ‘Flat Jesus!’” Both school teachers, Crow’s daughters were familiar with Flat Stanley. Flat Stanley is a paper … [Read more...]
‘Exploring His creation’ – Former NASA engineer, MBU professor marvels at SpaceX launch
ST. LOUIS – During the 1990s, Jerry Deese was part of a team at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories that partnered with NASA on various engineering problems. His resume features phrases like, “equations of fluid mechanics at speeds ranging from subsonic to hypersonic,” and “nonlinear partial differential equations based on explicit time-stepping techniques and including models for turbulence and non-equilibrium chemical kinetic effects.” But while those phrases are incomprehensible to … [Read more...]

‘Unlimited options’ – VBS plans allow churches to reach kids amid pandemic
BALLWIN – It may look different than it has in years past, but there’s no excuse for canceling Vacation Bible School this summer. That’s the word from Christy Nance, the VBS coordinator for the Missouri Baptist Convention. “Churches shouldn’t say, ‘Oh no! We can’t do VBS this year,’ she said. “We need to ask, ‘Which VBS is best for our situation?’ There are so many ways to be safe.” Depending on a church’s location, size, schedule, volunteer pool and leadership, the best fit may be … [Read more...]
Super Summer canceled, will not be rescheduled
JEFFERSON CITY – Super Summer, the flagship student ministry event for Missouri Baptists, has been canceled. Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Director John Yeats and the MBC Making Disciples Group announced the “difficult” decision to cancel Super Summer, May 15. It had been scheduled for June 8-12 on the campus of Southwest Baptist University, and June 15-19 on the campus of Hannibal-LaGrange University. Super Summer Director Jason Walters said leaders had previously canceled camp … [Read more...]
Chaplain ministers to vulnerable at Kansas City assisted living center
KANSAS CITY – Mike Crowell is a hand shaker. For six years, he’s shaken hands with people as he ministers at The Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care facility. Shaking hands with anyone right now – especially with those in such a vulnerable population – is a no-no, so Crowell has to adapt. “I'll just extend my hand, not touching any hands and shake it, and they'll do the same,” said Crowell, a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Liberty and a North American Mission … [Read more...]

MBCH trustees celebrate faith profession, generosity
BRIDGETON – The need to care for Missouri’s at-risk children and families doesn’t change during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ministry and operations of the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home couldn’t stop either. Staff and caseworkers kept ministry rolling along with enhanced (and sometimes inconvenient) safety measures, and trustees met virtually April 28 to take care of the business side of things. It wasn’t a typical board meeting, but aside from a little chaos figuring out who seconded … [Read more...]
Mo. Baptists urged to consider mental health of church members, others in community
JEFFERSON CITY – Many of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are obvious: empty parking lots, empty toilet paper or meat aisles, and ubiquitous masks. But though one other ripple effects remain hidden due to isolation, unemployment and lack of human contact, it may be even more vital for the church to recognize: mental health. Mental health among church members and others in the community is something churches need to consider, said Gaylon Moss, director of Disaster Relief for the … [Read more...]
Virtual celebrations – Baptist schools hail graduates online, reschedule in-person commencements
ST. LOUIS – Let no one say the class of 2020 didn’t have a memorable graduation. It may not have featured all the usual pomp and circumstance or the wails of bagpipes, but Baptist schools are finding ways to honor their seniors even though chapels and arena remain empty. Missouri Baptist University For example, Missouri Baptist University normally holds its commencement at the Family Arena in St. Charles. The in-person celebration has been pushed back to Nov. 13, but the school hosted a … [Read more...]
FBC Huntsville hosts online revival services
HUNTSVILLE – There’s something fitting about having an old-fashioned revival service married with the modern technology of living streaming. That’s what happened when First Baptist Church here hosted an online revival service six nights in a row in April on Facebook Live. Pastor John Rhodes never felt a clear direction from God about any one single preacher to invite, so he invited six preachers his congregation was familiar with to deliver the Word virtually, each from his own … [Read more...]
On the philosophy of being bored
JEFFERSON CITY – As of press time (we journalists love that phrase, don’t you know), I’ve watched 44 classic movies since I began sheltering in place (this journalist hates that phrase… just say “stay at home.”). I love movies, but I’m beginning to grow bored with my Stay at Home Film Festival. The situation, my friends, is growing dire. To be sure, a little cabin fever is preferable to the very literal, very real fever that might have spread even more if we weren’t all camping out at … [Read more...]
