MBTS’s Allen: Education about preparing to be faithful, not just diplomas, credentials
HANNIBAL – Nearly all private colleges and universities in the U.S. began with one purpose in mind: theological training: Harvard, Yale, Princeton and others. And yet one by one, decade by decade, compromise by compromise, they jettisoned their Christian mission and strayed farther and farther away from their founding principles. Anthony Allen, president of Hannibal-LaGrange University, attended such an institution as an undergrad at Duke University in North Carolina. Allen explained that … [Read more...]
Three simple truths about the Trinity
Consider three simple truths the Scriptures teach about the Trinity: 1. There is only one true God. 2. The Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Spirit is God. 3. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct, but inseparable, persons who exist simultaneously. 1. There is only one true God. Christians do not worship three gods; that’s polytheism. We do not worship one God made up of three parts; that’s tritheism. Nor do we exalt God as a lone actor who wears three different masks; … [Read more...]

School choice focus of Sec. of Ed Missouri visit
JEFFERSON CITY – U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos used a Jan. 24 trip to the Missouri Capitol to champion local control of schools as well as school choice for elementary, middle and high school students. Such control would allow a school to better reflect its community, and choice could make it easier for parents to pay for private school or homeschooling, using tax credits should they decide it was the right move for their families. In her speech, which was delivered to members of … [Read more...]
Annual George Liele day added to SBC calendar
NASHVILLE (BP) – Pastor Marshal Ausberry uses a basketball analogy to describe the late missionary George Liele, whom the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee recognized Tuesday (Feb. 18) as worthy of inclusion on the official SBC calendar of events. "If I use a basketball term, he was a triple threat, an evangelist, a missionary and church planter. All done under extremely difficult circumstances," Ausberry has said. "If George Liele had a basketball jersey I think we would … [Read more...]
Fellowship Greenwood men urged to be ‘close and clean’
GREENWOOD – It was about as manly a Saturday night as could be in the southern Kansas City community. A couple hundred men gathered and ate nachos. They were also there to worship and further develop a lifestyle defined by a clean heart and a close walk with Jesus. Fellowship Greenwood hosted its 6th annual men’s conference here Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Speakers John Mark … [Read more...]
Foley Baptist celebrates rebound after flood
FOLEY – On a regular day, Foley Baptist Church sits a mile west of the Mississippi River. Last June, when the rains fell and the waters rose, it wasn’t just near the Mississippi. It was in the Mississippi. The muddy waters crossed the field that normally separated the town from the river’s banks, ultimately depositing eight inches of filthy, stagnant water in the church. And even then the people of Foley couldn’t do anything but wait for the waters to recede. “We couldn’t even get back … [Read more...]

Parson at March for Life: ‘All life is precious’
JEFFERSON CITY – Chilly temperatures didn’t dampen spirits of thousands of men, women and children who gathered around and in Missouri’s Capitol Feb. 1 to defend the lives of the unborn and celebrate strides made toward ending abortion. The 2020 Midwest March for Life featured various speakers, but the biggest name was Governor Mike Parson. “All life is precious, and that’s why we fight to protect the unborn… to protect those who can’t defend themselves,” he said. “I’m here to tell you, … [Read more...]
