WASHINGTON -- Saeed Abedini, the Christian missionary who has been imprisoned for his faith in Iran since July 2012, was among four Americans released from prison today by Iranian authorities, according to multiple news reports. Abedini, 35, was arrested nearly four years ago while attempting to establish orphanages in Iran. His capture made headlines as his wife, Naghmeh, traveled the world in attempts to secure her husband's freedom. She first gained attention among Southern Baptists … [Read more...]
MBC joins historic pro-life lawsuit
WASHINGTON – The Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) is joining what could be this decade’s most important pro-life case to come before the U.S. Supreme Court. The MBC’s Christian Life Commission (CLC) voted, Jan. 6, to send an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court, supporting a Texas law that, if it stands, could sound the death knell for dozens of Texas abortion clinics. The Supreme court agreed to hear the case (Whole Woman’s Health v. Cole) on Nov. 13, 2015. It is the first … [Read more...]
Women in combat: DOD change spurs debate
WASHINGTON (BP) – U.S. Department of Defense’s decision to open all military combat positions to women has rekindled a theological and practical debate on the role of women in battle. “It is no shock that a secular society that has embraced feminism and transgender ideology is now confused about gender roles and war,” Owen Strachan, president of the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, told Baptist Press. “Men have no idea who they are today. Their grandfathers bled out on the … [Read more...]
Persecution fails to thwart gospel inroads
CENTRAL ASIA (BP) – Christian aid worker Gary Warrior* was sitting on the floor in a Central Asian village with a congregation of about 20 people several years ago, getting ready to share about “the cost of discipleship.” Someone made the suggestion to go around the room and share their testimonies. One woman simply said, “Oh, I’m just very blessed and I’m so thankful to be here.” Her friend elbowed her: “Explain to him your testimony, tell him what’s happening in your life with God.” But … [Read more...]
Aborted babies dumped in landfills
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Life News) – A federal judge has blocked Ohio officials from enforcing state law by stopping three Planned Parenthood abortion clinics from illegally dumping aborted babies in local landfills. The Planned Parenthood abortion business in Ohio whose three clinics were caught illegally dumping aborted babies at landfills has struck back at the very state officials who caught them breaking state law. The abortion company filed a lawsuit against state officials claiming the … [Read more...]

TEHRAN, Iran (BP) -- Iranian pastor Farshid Fathi has been freed after five years imprisonment in Tehran because of charges linked to his Christian faith, Middle East Concern announced Dec. 22, estimating nearly 100 Christians remain imprisoned there. "We are so thankful to the Lord for his protection over Farshid while in prison," Middle East Concern said in a press release. "It is our hope that the Gospel will continue to spread throughout Iran." Fathi was released Dec. 21 from … [Read more...]
Hawley brings faith into public arena
I have had more than one friend in recent days suggest that Americans will ultimately repeal the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech, freedom to peaceably assemble, freedom of the press and freedom to exercise our religion of choice. His suggestion follows an informal poll by Fox News of students at an Ivy League school who were asked: “Should the First Amendment be repealed?” The overwhelming response was “yes.” What was thought … [Read more...]
Down syndrome does not exclude from serving God
MARSHFIELD – As TJ Slocum took his place behind the microphone that Sunday morning, he looked out at the congregation of Timber Ridge Baptist Church. Every church member looked up at him expectantly; each with a warm smile on his or her face. TJ’s song selection that morning was “Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)” by Chris Tomlin. He loves to sing Chris Tomlin songs. “He’ll get up there and sing his heart out and the beauty of it is he’s not doing it to hear himself sing; he’s doing … [Read more...]
Home for Christmas: Siblings in foster care find ‘forever family’
SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (BP) – Sam and Stephanie Patterson’s long and emotional quest to become parents was finally realized last December when they adopted four young siblings through foster care. “It feels like the greatest Christmas present we could have ever received,” Stephanie said of her and her husband’s journey. Dec. 18 marks the first anniversary of the adoption of Carrie, now 12, Carissa, 8, Austin, 4, and 3-year-old Kali. The children lived in the Pattersons’ home for more than a … [Read more...]
Missouri schools act to protect bathroom privacy
MARIONVILLE – Several school districts in southwest Missouri have acted to adopt policies to protect the personal privacy of students enrolled in their public schools. The policies ensure that students using restrooms, locker rooms, and shower facilities are not exposed to individuals of the opposite sex. The policies have been established to address the issue of gender-confused students who seek access to facilities used by the opposite biological sex. So-called “transgender” students … [Read more...]
Senate defunds abortion giant
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Senate passed a budget-related bill, Dec. 3, that challenges President Obama to carry out his promised veto to protect, in part, the country’s No. 1 abortion provider. Senators voted 52-47 in a nearly party-line roll call for a reconciliation measure that cuts 80 to 90 percent of federal funds in the next year for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and its affiliates. The legislation also repeals fundamental sections of the controversial 2010 … [Read more...]
Are men, women equal?
By complementarianism, I mean the view that men and women are equal as God’s fellow image bearers, but nonetheless have some differences of role in the church and in the home. The way I like to put it is equal, but not interchangeable. In other words, you cannot simply swap male and female in and out of different roles without any consequence; nor are the differences between male and female mere matters of anatomy. There are some fundamental, structural, psychological differences as well … [Read more...]
