WASHINGTON (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention's ethics entity has called on President Trump and Congress to act quickly in the new year to protect unborn children. The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission recommended six pro-life priorities to the new administration and legislators in a Dec. 20 post at the entity's website. The items offered by Russell Moore, the ERLC's president, and Travis Wussow, the recently named vice president for public policy, included: Making the Hyde … [Read more...]
Supreme Court examines death penalty for the disabled
HOUSTON (BP) -- Bobby James Moore got the death penalty for a murder he committed in 1980 at a Houston supermarket. But 36 years later, he apparently has a new argument: He is intellectually disabled and cannot be executed under a 2002 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. The Supreme Court heard his case at the end of November. Moore was 21 when he and some friends decided to rob Birdsall Super Market. His job was to stand guard with a shotgun. Things did not go as planned. Almost immediately … [Read more...]
Texas Planned Parenthood referred for prosecution
WASHINGTON (BP) – The House Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives referred Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast for criminal prosecution to the Texas attorney general Dec. 1 over allegations it sold aborted babies' body parts. "There is so much that we the American people didn't understand and still don't understand about this industry," said Rep. Mia Love, R-Utah, on the House floor. "However, since then, the panel's investigation has uncovered alarming revelations about the fetal tissue … [Read more...]
CDC report leaves pro-lifers encouraged, cautious
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (BP) -- The number of women and girls undergoing abortions in the United States dropped by one-fifth between 2004 and 2013, a new report shows. While the report shows the abortion rate is the lowest it's been since 1969 when the government started tracking the procedure, the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission urged a bit of caution in its news release, The Weekly. While expressing optimism with the report, they also noted the study relies on information provided … [Read more...]
SBC’s Frank Page: Principles, pragmatism motivated Trump voters
NASHVILLE (BP) -- Americans went to bed, if they went to bed at all, stunned with the news of last night's election. The same Americans woke this morning, if they slept at all, stunned with the news of last night's election. We now await the elite to tell us what happened and why Americans voted as they did. I am not among that group. And few would ask my analysis. But, I'm going to give it anyway! Americans voted out of principle, but also out of pragmatism. This is the way it has … [Read more...]
With election over, prayer & grace urged
WASHINGTON (BP) -- Donald Trump pulled off a startling victory with the support of four in five white voters who identified themselves as evangelical Christians, and Southern Baptist leaders called for prayer for the president-elect and grace toward others. Trump -- the billionaire, celebrity businessman -- completed his unexpected rise through the Republican Party and the American electorate to defeat Democratic favorite Hillary Clinton Tuesday (Nov. 8), surprising pollsters and most … [Read more...]
SBC President Steve Gaines speaks on Trump Victory
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- Today Americans have a new president -- Donald J. Trump. As Christians, it is Scripturally incumbent upon us to pray for him and for all our political leaders (cf. 1 Timothy 2:1-2). It is also mandatory for us to honor all people, even those with whom we disagree (cf. 1 Peter 2:17). If we disagree with someone's opinions, we must do so without attacking the person. There has been far too much inflammatory rhetoric coming from Christian leaders throughout this … [Read more...]
The Reformation, the conscience, election day
“Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason, I do not accept the authority of the popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other. My conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything. For to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen.” The German Reformer Martin Luther spoke these words in 1521 at the Diet of Worms, where he had been called to testify about his controversial … [Read more...]
MBTS’s Robin Hadaway: ‘The best of 5 choices’ in 2016 Election
KANSAS CITY – It has become clear this week that there are no good candidates for President in this election cycle. In fact, some might say, “‘so-and-so’ is especially ‘no good’.” A voter has basically five choices. The first choice is to not vote at all. This form of protest “voting” is often practiced in non-democratic societies where elections are rigged or where certain segments of a population are not permitted to run for office. Reports indicate that many did not vote in the recent … [Read more...]
Paige Patterson on 2016 Election: WWII German troops offer lesson in choosing hope
What do April 30, 1945, and Nov. 8, 2016, have in common? The first date was the culmination of World War II. On that fateful day, Adolf Hitler apparently shot himself in the mouth as Russian soldiers moved in on his compound. But in the midst of all that tragedy, an interesting saga played itself out in Germany. Before Hitler realized that he had lost the war, almost all other Germans knew it well. The Russians were closing from the East, and the Americans came from the West. The dilemma … [Read more...]
Prayer urged as amendments are considered
JEFFERSON CITY – Conservative organizations are split regarding some state constitutional amendments that Missourians will be asked to consider in the voting booth, Nov. 8. But one organization has recommended a simple strategy for tackling these ballot initiatives: Vote “No” on Amendments 1-4 and Proposition A, and “Yes” on 6. Whatever voters decide to do, Missouri Southern Baptist leaders are calling them to do so prayerfully. “I would encourage everyone to join me in prayerfully … [Read more...]
Internet change could threaten religious liberty
WASHINGTON (BP) – When the U.S. government relinquishes control of a nonprofit organization that oversees internet domain names, a California Baptist University software engineering professor says, the potential for religious liberty violations could increase. Since 1998, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has coordinated and administered internet domain names, with oversight from the U.S. Department of Commerce. But as of Oct. 1, when the government’s contract … [Read more...]
