ST. LOUIS – During the 1990s, Jerry Deese was part of a team at McDonnell Douglas Research Laboratories that partnered with NASA on various engineering problems. His resume features phrases like, “equations of fluid mechanics at speeds ranging from subsonic to hypersonic,” and “nonlinear partial differential equations based on explicit time-stepping techniques and including models for turbulence and non-equilibrium chemical kinetic effects.” But while those phrases are incomprehensible to … [Read more...]

Spurgeon’s lessons valued during crisis, day-to-day life
KANSAS CITY – Though there were no Zoom calls and live streaming back during the cholera outbreak in 1854, seminary leaders continue to marvel today at how legendary British Baptist pastor Charles Spurgeon, who wasn’t even 20 years-old at the time, ministered during a crisis. Nearly 130 years after his death, and amid today’s COVID-19 pandemic, C.H. Spurgeon is the subject of various related stories, podcast discussions, a recent online event, entitled “24 Hours with Charles Spurgeon” that … [Read more...]
WMU’s prayer, service the backbone of the Missouri State BSU ministry
SPRINGFIELD – If it weren’t for the WMU, the BSU ministry at Missouri State University might not even exist. “I don’t think BSU would be around without them getting their churches to rally around,” says Campus Missionary Chris Wilson, who has led the BSU at his alma mater since 2010. “When I was a student at MSU in the 90’s, they were there, the same ladies,” Wilson says. “They’ve provided that support for a long time.” The integral role of Baptist women in the BSU goes right back to its … [Read more...]
‘Unlimited options’ – VBS plans allow churches to reach kids amid pandemic
BALLWIN – It may look different than it has in years past, but there’s no excuse for canceling Vacation Bible School this summer. That’s the word from Christy Nance, the VBS coordinator for the Missouri Baptist Convention. “Churches shouldn’t say, ‘Oh no! We can’t do VBS this year,’ she said. “We need to ask, ‘Which VBS is best for our situation?’ There are so many ways to be safe.” Depending on a church’s location, size, schedule, volunteer pool and leadership, the best fit may be … [Read more...]

College ministries, campus missionaries find creative ways to serve students
BLAND – If desperation is the mother of invention, then pandemic may well be the mother of creativity. Loving and serving others is more complicated in a post-coronavirus world, but it’s far from impossible: it just takes some imagination. MBCollegiate campus missionaries have been finding creative ways to serve students and their communities despite the disruption and challenges of this season. Some campus missionaries brought smiles to faces with small but meaningful gestures that let … [Read more...]
Lost leg leads to changed lives, mission opportunities
SPRINGFIELD – Cold rain and dark skies loomed over the highway shortly before 7 p.m. on Nov. 15, 2012. James Wilson was driving home from a hunting trip with his son when, suddenly, a drunk driver hit him head on. Wilson, a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church here, remembers little else – only “glimpses,” snapshots of the traumatic evening: He remembers his son beating on his car door, calling to him, “Dad, do you recognize my voice?” He remembers his son leaning over him, placing his … [Read more...]
Cooperative mask ministry covers Steelville
STEELVILLE – The masks they had on hand that day were made specifically for members of their church. Hand-delivering them had allowed Lois and Don Wissman, pastor at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church here, to check in on their mostly senior adult congregation since the COVID-19 social distancing regulations went into effect. But when they arrived at one church member’s housing complex, they were stopped by a small group of people who asked if they could have a mask as well. “That day I only … [Read more...]
