FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (BP) – Growing up in Brazil, Thiago Montanher de Queiroz came to know Christ at 10 years old and early on felt God calling’s to follow Him into international missions. As an adult while attending a local seminary, Montanher had a professor of missions and church planting – an International Mission Board missionary – who helped confirm and encourage his calling. “[The missionary’s] love for the nations was contagious, and I have never seen anyone so passionate about the … [Read more...]

Support, sadness mark reactions to IMB plan
JEFFERSON CITY – Southern Baptists may vary in their opinions about the International Mission Board’s (IMB) recent decision to cut 600-800 staff and field personnel in order to address revenue shortfalls. But John Edie, chairman for the IMB board of trustees and a member of Second Baptist Church, Springfield, said that many people are responding with both sadness and support. “The reaction has been, needless to say, mixed,” Edie told The Pathway. “But if you had to put it on a scale of … [Read more...]
Hope in a backpack for hungry children
MORIARTY, N.M. – For most school-age children, weekends are a highly anticipated time of fun and freedom. But for others, there’s another expectation – hunger. These kids live in a survival cycle, taking multiple trips through the cafeteria line at school – stocking-up at lunch on Friday and catching up at breakfast on Monday –to compensate for the food that is in short supply (or even unavailable) on the days in between. Pastor Dennis Garcia of The People Church in Moriarty, N.M., knows … [Read more...]
An open letter from IMB President Platt on personnel reductions
Dear SBC Family, By now many of you may have heard that last week, IMB announced a plan to reduce the total number of our personnel (both here and overseas) by 600-800 people over the next six months. Since the moment this announcement was made, we have sought to communicate the details of this decision as clearly as possible to churches, state conventions, and national entities across the SBC (see this article and this FAQ document, in particular). In the middle of it all, though, I … [Read more...]
‘To the ends of the earth’: Riverview carries gospel to Thailand
THAILAND – As soon as the mission team from Riverview Baptist Church in Osage Beach finished their presentation in the school, a line of children eager for autographs formed. “The only other Americans these children had ever seen are on TV, so they were excited,” said Spencer Plumlee, pastor at Riverview. “Each guy on our team had at least 30 students lining up around him. It was a great time to connect and encourage them.” During their recent mission trip, Riverview’s team and Paissons … [Read more...]
Italy next up for partnership missions
JEFFERSON CITY – If approved by messengers to the annual meeting in October, Missouri Baptists will form a new, four-year partnership for missions with Italy beginning Jan. 1, 2016. The initial plan was approved by the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) executive board July 14 based on the recommendation of Rick Hedger, MBC partnership missions specialist. Hedger has been praying for Italy and seeking the next MBC partnership for two years, and said God has laid the former … [Read more...]
Bucket project opens doors in Africa
Summer has arrived. Missouri’s Major League Baseball Teams are on top of their game with a winning season, and Missouri Baptists are being asked to step up to the plate as well. Missouri Baptists have been given a huge challenge by Baptist Global Response to fill 5,000 “Buckets of Love” in 2015. This month, 486 of Missouri’s buckets have arrived at the Houston port ready to be shipped to Africa to give our IMB missionaries and Baptist partners an open door to share the gospel with persons … [Read more...]
Missouri couple shares Christ in South Asia
SOUTH ASIA – As a 7-year-old growing up in Clinton, Mo., Chase Tozer* heard the gospel at an old-fashioned revival meeting. He felt convicted, but was unsure he was ready to be obedient. “He was preaching on fire and brimstone,” Tozer remembered. “I made a deal with God: If he brought me back the next night, I would go talk to the preacher and figure out just what he was talking about.” He accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior that night, and when he open his eyes after praying, he saw … [Read more...]
Six questions with Nik Ripken
Editor’s note: Nik Ripken (a pseudonym for security reasons) is a veteran IMB missionary and author who conducted 600 interviews in 72 countries where believers live amid persecution and suffering. Mark Snowden, MBC evangelism/discipleship strategist, interviewed him by phone for The Pathway on July 7. Q: How should Christians respond to an increasingly hostile culture where moral decline and even legislation is perceived as increasingly anti-biblical? Nik: The Bible says we reap what we … [Read more...]
Nik Ripken: Lessons from the persecuted world for America
JEFFERSON CITY – The Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex “marriage” is seen by many as possibly triggering persecution for followers of Jesus in America. Nik Ripken is an authority on persecuted believers. “The Bible says we reap what we sow,” Ripken said. “We also cannot reap what we don’t sow. The church in America is reaping what they haven’t sown in America. …We haven’t been persecuted. How can we be so self-centered and we haven’t even lost anything yet? We need to stop … [Read more...]
IMB to align missionary requirements with BF&M
RICHMOND, Va. (BP) – The International Mission Board’s (IMB) new policy on missionary qualifications – replacing previous restrictions related to baptism, speaking in tongues and divorce among other matters – represents an effort to keep basic requirements from going beyond the Baptist Faith and Message, IMB President David Platt told reporters May 14. “We want it to be simple and clear that what’s driving us doctrinally is what all these churches [of the Southern Baptist Convention] have … [Read more...]
