Newspapers strive to be the first to report a big story. One of the biggest The Pathway has ever reported is the revival at Fort Leonard Wood. If you did not read this story, please do. It is garnering national attention. Revival in our military is nothing new. The American Revolution was sandwiched between both Great Awakenings in the 18th century. Artist Arnold Friberg captured the importance of faith to the Colonial Army in his famous painting of General George Washington praying in the … [Read more...]
New, old friendships a blessing from God
Mom and step-dad, Joe, live in a retirement community outside of Nashville, Tenn. Most everyone is 70 or older. Every time I visit, I am struck by the close-knit fellowship the residents enjoy. They monitor each other’s condos when one is traveling. They fix food and sweet treats for each other – just because. They periodically check on one another as a defense against a lurking enemy: loneliness. They pray for each other when they are sick or troubled. It is an amazing thing to … [Read more...]
It’s about faith, family, integrity: Secretary of State Ashcroft reassures voters as statewide elections near
JEFFERSON CITY – John Robert "Jay" Ashcroft, 45, is an attorney, engineer and politician. Elected in 2016, he is the 40th Secretary of State of Missouri. Born in Jefferson City, he is the son of John and Janet Ashcroft. John Ashcroft is the former governor, U.S. Senator and U.S. Attorney General for President George W. Bush. Jay and his wife, Katie, have four children. I interviewed him July 10 in his office in the Kirkpatrick Building just west of the State Capitol overlooking the Missouri … [Read more...]
Making new friends: Partnership missions is a way
In 1 Corinthians Chapters 12 and 13 the Apostle Paul has a lot to say to the church of Jesus Christ about spiritual gifts and loving one another. In 1 Cor. 12:28, he lists the spiritual gifts that followers of Christ have. In 1 Cor. 13:2, Paul writes, “If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” One practical way a spiritual gift can be an act of love is to minister to a … [Read more...]
How an SBC church rescued me from abuse
He came from behind, grabbed my hair and repeatedly slammed my head into the brick exterior of a convenience store. Stunned and knocked nearly unconscious, I fell to my knees. All I can remember is a woman customer screaming and then sirens. I had no health insurance, so a doctor or emergency room visit was out of the question. I staggered to my car and somehow drove home, which was less than a mile away. The next thing I remember was lying in the bed, looking through fog at the ceiling. … [Read more...]
Overcoming prejudicial blind spots
I have one great-niece in our family of only 10. So, we’re tighter than a bug in a rug. Tightness aside, it is my three-year-old great-niece, Tynslee, that is “the star of the Hinkle show.” When I think about Tynslee, Psalm 127:3 comes to mind, “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord and the fruit of the womb is His reward.” The term “reward” is so appropriate for Tynslee. She is gorgeous, smart and vivacious like any energic three-year-old Miss America. She can sing like an … [Read more...]
Satanist incantations, tax credits and Dred Scott
Incantations offered by a woman and a transvestite with the Order of Satanic Sisterhood at the state Capitol May 18 served as a reminder of the evil forces seeking control of our government. Not a single member of the Missouri General Assembly or statewide officeholder attended the, well, whatever it was. So the Satanists exercised their First Amendment rights in The Rotunda. A few people briefly observed before moving on and several Christians lingered among the statues in the Hall of … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist Pathway Editor: ‘The government got it wrong with Dred Scott’
For reconciliation to be realized, the offending party must acknowledge one’s wrongdoing, stop doing it and ask the offended party for forgiveness. The offended party must then forgive. Of course, God made forgiveness an infinitely important ingredient by offering sinners grace – and the gift of eternal life through the penal substitutionary death of Jesus on Golgotha’s Hill. I pray that God’s example will inspire the government of Missouri to move the state forward as we strive for racial … [Read more...]
Ten Commandments monument to return to state Capitol
On June 27, 2017, citizens of Arkansas gathered at their state Capitol in Little Rock to commemorate the installation of a monument featuring the Ten Commandments. Less than 24 hours later Michael T. Reed II drove a 2016 Dodge Dart into the 6,000-pound granite slab, knocking it over and breaking it into multiple pieces. Reed, who committed a similar act on the grounds of the state Capitol in Oklahoma City in 2014, was arrested by Arkansas authorities and charged with two felonies and a … [Read more...]
No end in sight for battle over religious freedom
Conflict over religious freedom will continue for future generations of Missourians. Many observers feel the U.S. Supreme Court’s Obergefell v. Hodges decision in 2015 that legalized same-sex “marriage,” repeated the mistake it made with Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion. Rather than let the people sort through the issue, the high court – like a blunt instrument – cutoff public debate, triggering yet another decades-long struggle – this time over religious freedom. In the last decade … [Read more...]
Protecting the unborn, voting, digging wells
Missouri has become one of the nation’s strongest defenders of the unborn, and that reputation will be enhanced if the General Assembly passes the “Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.” The bill will soon be debated in the House of Representatives. It will prevent abortions on preborn babies over 20 weeks gestation, when science and medical practice confirm that preborn babies can feel pain. We join Missouri Right to Life and other pro-life organizations in urging its passage. It would … [Read more...]
Royals fight porn, 2nd Springfield lands interim, other notes
Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore has been featured in The Pathway several times highlighting his faith in Christ. Now Moore is taking the fight to pornography by offering classes to the team’s players, coaches and staff, warning them of porn’s destructive nature. The Royals recently took timeout from their spring training schedule in Surprise, Ariz., to attend a seminar led by Fight the New Drug, a non-profit organization that warns about pornography’s harmful … [Read more...]
