JEFFERSON CITY – Each year, the Missouri Baptist Foundation (MBF) honors those who have been generous with their life and resources to benefit God’s kingdom. MBF established the Fellowship of Christian Stewards in 2001 as a way to present personal examples of whole-life Christian stewardship – the gift of talents, time and treasures. Pastors, ministry leaders and lay members can make nominations. MBF trustees consider the nominations and choose those to be recognized. In addition, MBF … [Read more...]

ESCUINTLA CITY, Guatemala – Southern Baptist mission groups from the United States ministering in Guatemala are safe after a volcano erupted on June 3. One mission group from Union Hill Baptist Church in Holts Summit was working in an orphanage about 70 miles northwest of the eruption when it occurred, according to KRCG 13. Associate Pastor Jason Glenn told KRCG that the group was unaware of the disaster until they saw the ash and residue in the sky. When he learned it was from a … [Read more...]
‘God bless Missouri’: FBC Bolivar church member takes up office of Governor
JEFFERSON CITY – After taking his oath of office as Missouri’s 57th governor, Michael L. Parson, 62, closed his brief remarks with a comment that has been on the lips of many politicians, past and present: “God bless America,” he said, and “God bless Missouri.” But, according to the men and women of First Baptist Church Bolivar, Parson’s closing statement is no platitude. Parson has been a member at FBC Bolivar for nearly 27 years, having joined the church on Sept. 22, 1991. “Mike’s been … [Read more...]
KC surgeon stormed Normandy, treated Truman
INDEPENDENCE – A little boy from Doniphan County, Kansas, is the last person one might expect to be responsible for the lives of the President and First Lady. But that became the case for Wallace Graham, who would storm the beaches of Normandy, earn three Purple Hearts, serve as the personal physicians for Harry and Bess Truman and ultimately join Wornall Road Baptist Church in Kansas City. Graham and his family moved from Doniphan County to Kansas City when he was nine years old, just as … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist veterans’ legacies live on
EOLIA - War is full of extraordinary men and women doing extraordinary feats under extraordinary circumstances. But just because a soldier or sailor doesn’t have a story worthy of the silver screen doesn’t mean they – and their families – didn’t make enormous sacrifices for God and country. Such is the case with just two of countless Missouri Baptists who served in harms way during World War II: William Friese, Sr., who fought in the Battle of the Bulge and James Wheeler, Sr., who landed … [Read more...]
After 77 years, USS Oklahoma missing sailor honored at FBC Diamond
DIAMOND - Clifford George Goodwin’s last day on earth was the “day that will live in infamy,” but no one knew of his fate for sure until just recently. His life and sacrifice were celebrated at First Baptist, Diamond May 12, 77 years after his death. Goodwin, an electrician’s mate hailing from Diamond in southwest Missouri, was assigned to the bowels of the USS Oklahoma along with his older brother, Daniel, a gunner’s mate. Clifford was one of hundreds of men trapped in the ship as the … [Read more...]
Hazelwood stirs hope in hotel residents
HAZELWOOD – Sometimes staying in a hotel is no vacation. “There are hotels in Hazelwood that cater to people who are homeless,” said Jim Walker, lead pastor at Hazelwood Baptist Church (HBC), located in northwest St. Louis County. “They are families who get evicted because they couldn’t make rent or because outstanding utility bills overwhelm them and they’ve exhausted their other options. They are living week to week or even day by day.” Seeing the need and desiring to do something about … [Read more...]
Viburnum FBC’s outreach blesses local families, widow
VIBURNUM – She had a 6-foot-wide hole in her roof and a 55-gallon drum catching rainwater in her living room. Retired after 35 years in the Viburnum school district and now living with her son who was diagnosed with cancer, Love Thy Neighbor gave this elderly widow a brand new roof. “I was on that crew and every person except me had her as a teacher,” said Justin Perry, pastor at First Baptist Church here. “While the crew worked, she cried tears of joy and told story after story about … [Read more...]
God builds Strong Tower in St. Joseph
ST. JOSEPH – One year into setting up and tearing down each week in a roller rink turned bingo hall – a rite of passage for many young church plants, God orchestrated a miracle for Strong Tower Baptist Church. “We got a phone call from a dwindling congregation in a different denomination,” said Senior Pastor Tom Wilson. “They said they were prayerfully considering giving us their building. They had to send out an e-mail asking others in their own denomination if they wanted it and if … [Read more...]
The mission gets personal: Forest Park, Joplin, advances gospel through Acts 1:8 project
JOPLIN – The mission doesn’t get powerful until it gets personal. “When a person sees the darkness in the world and then comes back they are much more motivated to do something about it,” said John Swadley, lead pastor at Forest Park Church here. “We desire to know the people out there on the field making the sacrifices to spread the gospel where they are so that we can play a small part in advancing their work.” That’s where Forest Park’s new giving strategy, the Acts 1:8 Project, comes … [Read more...]
Protecting the flock: Security training preps churches for day they pray never comes
HALLSVILLE – In some ways, it was like any other gathering of Christians. Two dozen pastors and laymen from across denominational lines gathered together, prayed, and discussed various issues facing their congregations. Scripture flowed freely. But as soon as pleasantries wrapped up, an air horn sounded and they each drew their pistols. They were part of the first two-day, “Tactical Applications of the Pistol for Church Protectors” training hosted by Strategos, which bills itself as the … [Read more...]
