KANSAS CITY, Kan. (BP) – Political leaders, social activists and the entertainment industry are ballyhooing for extreme reform in this rather chaotic era, as if trying to reconstruct our nation ideologically. Sadly, I'm not sure the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election will get us into balance. Then what will? Hollywood plays to humanity's narcissism and love of gadgets, and a growing anger that seemingly calls for anarchy. Many of us who see the Bible as the inerrant Word of … [Read more...]
Owen Strachen: Spider webs of our making
EDITOR’S NOTE: This article first appeared online at Midwestern Seminary’s blog, For The Church (ftc.co). I’ve found a resonant image playing in my mind related to my pride. Like a squirming bug trapped in a spider web, entangled at every juncture, so too can we Christians of all backgrounds and proclivities trap ourselves in webs of pride that threaten to kill our spirituality and love for the Lord. What do I mean by this? Simply this: with activities or involvements that revolve … [Read more...]
Olympian’s prayer: ‘Thy will be done’
RIO DE JANEIRO (BP) – In Sarah Scherer’s competitions, the slightest movement – even an errant breath – can be the difference between winning and losing. It’s understandable that such circumstances can cause times of nervousness and tension during a shooting competition. That’s why the Olympic shooter a few months ago decided to start reciting the Lord’s Prayer to herself when the pressure is on. “I realized I do that in life,” Scherer told Baptist Press. “I might as well do that when I’m … [Read more...]
Identity Crisis? No thank you
I told all five of my kids when they were little that they could grow up to be anyone they wanted. Of course, present day, that sounds like identity theft. So, oops. I’ve always figured I should be safe from that kind of identity theft myself. I’m just not sure anyone would want to be me enough to take that kind of risk. I mean, I enjoy being me and all. But I still have a hard time imagining a whole lot of people fighting over who gets to be the gal with the hair that won’t stay … [Read more...]
‘Reversed Thunder’
Living as a child in the plains of Western Oklahoma, I could often watch from a safe distance as a line of storms approached. Especially at night, I could see the flash and hear the crack of recurrent thunderbolts. Even after so many years, as I recall watching those nighttime storms, I’m amazed by such power and immediacy. Within milliseconds, 15 million volts of electricity cut across the sky and reach up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit—that is, five times the sun’s surface … [Read more...]
‘Weakened witness’ stayed on mission to the very end
EDITOR’S NOTE: Paul Koonce, who is featured in this story, is the father of Pathway Assistant Editor Brian Koonce. CHIFUNGA, Malawi – Paul Koonce was weak and exhausted. Barely able to stand, it took two assistants to get him from the truck and into Avant Baptist Church at Chifunga in Malawi, Africa. Though unable to get in and out of the rickety chair on his own, he still sat up straighter and grew stronger as he began to preach to the people gathering on the dirt floor. Through Charles, … [Read more...]
The idol of ease
This column was written by Melani Lenow and originally appeared on BiblicalWomen.com. It was finally the weekend after a busy week and an overall busy month. Early on Saturday was a pro-life event and I was debating whether to attend. In my heart, I feel strongly about this cause, but in my flesh I really wanted to sleep late. My flesh won out, and time after time I silenced my alarm. After all, I deserved a little rest, right? As it was nearing the “if I don’t get up now, there is no way … [Read more...]
God hears our prayers: A 3-month old’s testimony of healing
LEWISTOWN – Malachi Kuenzle already has a testimony, but the three-month old doesn’t know it. His family, however, has proclaimed God’s glory in their son’s news. Chris and Heather Kuenzle, Lewistown, were anxious for Malachi to join two-year old daughter Chloe. A different type of anxiety surfaced when 20 weeks into the pregnancy, Malachi was diagnosed with a kidney issue. “A hospital in Columbia said tests showed a cyst or something and one of his kidneys was bigger than the other,” … [Read more...]
Taking stairs in an elevator world
This week’s discovery: If you hear sirens and evacuation recordings blaring nonstop in the hallway of your hotel at 6:00 a.m., and if those recordings are telling you not to use the elevator (“I repeat, do NOT use the elevator”), the thing that will make it all the more exciting is remembering that you’re on the 20th floor. TWENT. TEE. ETH. You also probably want to make sure that your calves are fairly jello-ey because why waste that kind of workout on legs that are already in shape? … [Read more...]
Sheol and the afterlife
This is the second in a series of articles about the afterlife and the unseen realm. Is there conscious existence beyond the grave? Where did Old Testament saints go when they died? Do the wicked really suffer forever in hell? Should you believe in ghosts? These are important questions about the afterlife and the unseen world. Most religions deal in some way with these questions and appeal to a variety of authorities to provide answers. This series explores the manner in which God’s … [Read more...]
Missouri girl takes 3rd in national Bible Drill
WASHBURN – After receiving first place honors at the Missouri Youth Bible Drill in Trenton April 9, 14-year-old Lacey Reeves took center stage at the National Invitational Bible Drill Tournament June 17 in Colleyville, Texas. “I was placed in the middle of the drillers, number 8 of 11, and the judge was directly in front of me,” said Reeves, member of Prairie Hill Baptist Church here. “It’s pretty nerve-wracking and before I go up there I’m afraid I’ll forget everything I know. But … [Read more...]
Biblical truths about the afterlife
This is the first in a series of articles about the afterlife and the unseen realm. Three-year-old Colton Burpo had a near-death experience (NDE) while on the operating table. When it was over, he described his “three minutes in heaven” in vivid detail, including encounters with Samson, John the Baptist, and Jesus, who had sea-blue eyes and owned a rainbow-colored horse. Colton’s father, a Wesleyan pastor, believes the lad’s experience was real because he shared it with “the simple … [Read more...]
