ST. LOUIS (BP) – At times they raised their hands. At times they gathered together in groups of two to three. And at times thousands of messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention knelt at their chairs on Tuesday night (June 14) as they pleaded with God to bring national revival and spiritual awakening to America. In one of his final acts as SBC president, Ronnie Floyd led the convention in an evening of prayer during its annual meeting in St. Louis. “From this moment on, it will not be … [Read more...]
Jason Allen: On preaching, public invitations
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following essay was first posted on “For the Church,” a blog published by Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary online at ftc.co. I once preached a series of renewal services at Rosedale Baptist Church in Abingdon, VA. Commonly referred to as a “revival,” or, in previous generations, a “protracted meeting,” each service carried a specifically evangelistic emphasis. I prayed the Lord would be pleased to honor the preaching of His Word, call many to faith in Christ, and … [Read more...]
Spurgeon’s sorrows
Eswine, Zack. Spurgeon’s Sorrows: Realistic Hope for those who Suffer from Depression. Geanies House, Scotland: Christian Focus, 2014. 144 pages. $9.99. Many Christians know what it is like to go through dark times of the soul, whether because of circumstances, disposition, or dryness in one’s relationship with God. Many other Christians know what it is like to watch those they love go through those dark times, wondering how they can help or what they can say. Sometimes those dark times … [Read more...]
Light in a confused world
“Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105 Few would dispute the fact that our world is becoming more confusing. Young children may question, “Am I a boy/girl, or am I a boy/girl who looks like a boy/girl?” While shopping, where do I go to us the bathroom when there may be new choices? What are the Ten Commandments? Do those Ten Commandments just apply sometimes, or are they no longer applicable at all? Is our country’s Constitution outdated? Who has the … [Read more...]
Facing up to the folly of worry
Not that I’m over 40. Because what woman would ever admit to that? But let’s just say that my 39th birthday could soon encounter its own significant milestone. A milestone like: my 39th birthday realizing it might be eligible to VOTE. Oi vey. I’m feeling right now like I’ve put a lot of miles on a lot of milestones. So many miles that my engine probably needs a bit of an overhaul. And we won’t even talk about the bodywork. If I did happen to mention any needed bodywork, however, I’m sure I … [Read more...]
There’s hope in our adventure
Adventure books. I love those. And I hate them. And I love to hate them. About the entire aim of the writing in most suspense is getting readers to love a character…and then tormenting that character within an inch of his imaginary life with near-unbearable problems, danger, stress and anguish. Before you can recover, the writer tosses in another devastating struggle. And a heartbreak. Probably as he’s hanging from a cliff. Maybe then a natural disaster on top of that. Possibly two. I’m … [Read more...]

Trusting the trustworthy God
Sometimes people agree with me without even thinking it through. Of course, let’s face it, that shouldn’t happen all that often. Still, when something happens only occasionally, it makes every occurrence that much sweeter. So when someone agrees before even fully knowing what I’ve said, it makes me feel like I’m sort of the “terms and conditions” of people. Oh, the power. Basically I’m letting you all know that you can trust me. At least part of the time. I’ll be honest and tell you that … [Read more...]
The renewal of spring
In winter, trees lose their leaves, annuals die off completely, perennials die back and lose their color -- nature takes on an appearance of seeming fruitlessness. But then – spring! Those “dead” seeds are coaxed into life by the warming soil. The seed has enough stored food to live on for a few days until its roots get established, and soon it’s preparing for its annual purpose -- to bear fruit for the good of man and the glory of God. Our spiritual lives go through the winter-spring … [Read more...]
New tools, same rules
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23 Recent comments about young people and their “devices” would lead one to believe that technology is the work of the devil. There are those who blame recent inventions for many undesirable actions. They are upset that young people will talk on their cell phones instead of talking to people around them. They feel that too much time is spent on computers, cell phones, etc. On the other hand, there are … [Read more...]
