Court strikes down abortion provider regulations
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Supreme Court struck down Monday (June 27) a state legislature's effort to hold abortion providers responsible for the protection of women who use their services. In a 5-3 opinion, the high court ruled portions of a Texas law that regulate abortion doctors and clinics constitute an "undue burden" on a woman's right to abort her child and are therefore unconstitutional. The high court's reversal of the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans invalidated a … [Read more...]

Obama ‘potty policy’ should be ‘flushed’
Michael Whitehead/contributing writer WASHINGTON – On May 13, the Obama administration directed public schools (K-12) and colleges to permit transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity instead of their biological sex. It did so in a “Dear Colleague” letter from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Education Department (ED), warning that failure of a school district or college to comply might result in loss of federal funding. … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptist University’s Title IX exemption at risk
ST. LOUIS – Missouri Baptist University’s application for exemption from Title IX has been questioned by the U.S. Department of Education because of the actions it took in 2001 to separate from the Missouri Baptist Convention. Religious schools and colleges may request an exemption from Title IX if they hold sincere religious convictions about sex or gender and if the school is owned and controlled by a church or religious denomination. In a January 4, 2016, letter from the Department’s … [Read more...]

Trump’s win draws support, concern from evangelicals
WASHINGTON (BP) – Donald Trump's striking victory in Indiana Tuesday (May 3) apparently settled the race for the Republican presidential nomination, but it did little to resolve the divisiveness among conservatives and evangelical Christians over his controversial candidacy. The brash billionaire triumphed easily in the latest primary over both of his rivals for the GOP nomination, leaving him seemingly with no opponents and an open path to the nomination barring a stunningly dramatic … [Read more...]

ATLANTA (BP) -- Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal's March 28 announcement that he will veto the state's religious liberty bill has provoked criticism from social conservatives, including Southern Baptists. Mike Griffin, public affairs representative for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, told Baptist Press that Deal, a Republican, "missed an opportunity to stand for Georgia values as opposed to Wall Street and Hollywood values. We certainly respect his right to make that decision, but we also … [Read more...]
SUPER TUESDAY: Voting & the ‘evangelical’
NASHVILLE (BP) -- As pollsters analyze the voting patterns of "evangelicals" in Super Tuesday presidential primaries, some pastors and theologians have noted the mainstream media's failure to account for immense diversity among the movement claiming that label. Voters went to the polls March 1 in 13 states and one U.S. territory, including several so-called Bible Belt states where evangelical voters were expected to exert considerable influence. Yet confusion over the term … [Read more...]
Scalia’s death clouds abortion, religious liberty cases
WASHINGTON (BP) – The death of Associate Justice Antonin Scalia not only brings about a battle over replacing him and elevates the Supreme Court as an issue in the presidential election, but it likely will affect two important cases in this term, including one involving pro-life laws that Missouri Baptists have supported and another about religious liberty. A third case, also involving religious liberty and with direct ties to Missouri, may not be impacted by Scalia’s absence immediately, … [Read more...]
