HANNIBAL – Trustees for Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) approved plans for a new science building and approved four new “core principals” for the school during their second meeting Oct. 17-18. The former science building on campus was destroyed when high winds tore the roof off in May. HLGU officials are close to finishing negotiations with the insurance company and hope to complete construction on the new 40,000-square foot facility in time for next year’s fall semester. City on a hill: Missouri Baptists to reach Atlixco, Mexico
JEFFERSON CITY – More than 2,000 years ago Scripture records a moment in time when Jesus stood on a hill overlooking Jerusalem and wept. His heart cry was recorded as, “I wish that you would come to me, but you will not”. In September, Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Partnership Mission Strategist Rick Hedger stood on a hill above Atlixco, Mexico. With tears in his eyes, he told volunteers from Missouri, “This city is open to the gospel. They will respond, but they have never … [Read more...]
Twice Adopted tells of God’s Love at Branson, on tour
ST. LOUIS – Adopting 10 children into a family might seem daunting, but it works for Randy and Linda Koenig who live in a St. Louis suburb. Their children, adopted between 1990 and 2002, now range in age from 16 to 23. They sing as “Twice Adopted” at the historic Owens Theatre, Branson’s first theatre, which the Koenigs manage. The name indicates inclusion in a physical family as well as a spiritual family, as all the children have surrendered their lives to Jesus. After 11 childless … [Read more...]
‘The throne reclaimed the mission given’
Phil Bray, President Pastors' Conference The mission of the church, the purpose of our existence, is founded upon the universal sovereignty given to Jesus Christ. “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:19-20). We know this Scripture well. We know that Christ has commanded the church … [Read more...]

Eric House, Senior pastor First Baptist Church, Hokes Bluff, Ala. Like thousands of other Southern Baptist churches, First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff, Ala., has a long and treasured history of missions involvement. Several of our families have served as foreign missionaries. Hearing His word and following the Master
Mary Leigh Snowden While in St. Louis one day a missionary asked me why I did all the driving around Missouri? I told him I drove so that my husband who is the state evangelism/discipleship strategist could do his emails, answer and make phone calls, and catch up on his writing. “Makes sense,” he said. I like to think of my driving as a small contribution in helping Mark to be the most effective he can be in serving Missouri Baptists. They have entrusted him with a great task, and he … [Read more...]
The Apologist’s Tool Kit now available
Thank you, Missouri Baptists, for enthusiastically supporting the MBC’s new apologetics ministry. Over the last year, I have been privileged to speak or lead workshops in many churches across the state to help Christians “earnestly contend for the faith” (Jude 3). Topics have ranged from “How do I know the Bible is true?” to “What do false prophets have in common?” As many of you know, apologetics simply is “a reasonable defense of the Christian faith.” For followers of Jesus there has … [Read more...]

Pastor, family make return to Congo for mission work
KINSHASA, Congo – It is a dark, occult-like world, but a Missouri pastor and his family took the message of Jesus’ love to the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo during a recent mission trip. First Baptist, LaBelle, Pastor James Renot and family took a two-week trip in June to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, a place where they served as International Mission Board (IMB) missionaries from 2005-07. Now, few missionaries are there, with even IMB pulling out. “The obstacles … [Read more...]
Guns in church
Norwood – Pastor Stephen Fugitt believes that churches have the right to arm themselves for the day when a gunman enters their buildings to do harm. Yet no one had time to open fire against a gunman who aimed his .357 magnum revolver at Fugitt as he preached to his congregation at the First Baptist Church of Norwood, July 21. Instead, one church member grabbed the gunman’s arm, causing his first shot to hit the ceiling, while other men helped to wrestle him to the ground. They held him … [Read more...]
