ELDON – Often, it is a blessing when a pastor’s son joins the ministry. The blessing may have been tripled for a recent revival service at Aurora Springs Baptist here. Tim Smith’s s father Bill Smith joined son Tim and grandson Caleb Smith, current co-pastors of Aurora Springs Baptist Church, in a post-Easter revival service series. Each man took a night to preach during the revival, beginning with Tim, then Bill, then Caleb. All preached from John 20 or 21. Tim preached on the theme … [Read more...]
Ashland Baptist sponsors ‘Run the Good Race’
ASHLAND – For its fourth year, Ashland Baptist Church here is sponsoring a “Run the Good Race,” and some of the proceeds will benefit mission work May 20. “Run the Good Race” will be a 5k run/walk and a 10k run. The United States American Track and Field certifies the runs. “A certified race lets competitive runners use their times to enter other races,” Goodsell said. Pastor Matt Goodsell said the proceeds will benefit ministry. In the past, some of the funds were raised for the local … [Read more...]
FBC Arnold ministry aims for ‘one less orphan’
ARNOLD – Adopting and fostering children is a journey. FBC Arnold has a ministry, “One Less Orphan,” to make that journey easier to navigate by providing support for parents and children. “We started this ministry to encourage couples interested in adopting or going through the process,” Lisa Jackson, leader and member of FBC Arnold, said. “Tim and I have three biological children,” Lisa added, “and we adopted a boy from China.” Tim and Lisa Jackson were surprised by some of the … [Read more...]
Church at Three Trails seeks to grow through missions
ZACATELCO, Mexico – The Church at Three Trails didn’t seek out a partnership with Iglesia Bautista Maranatha in the city of Zacatelco. God sought them out. It began last fall when pastor Brian Grout attended the Partnership Missions luncheon during the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Annual Meeting in St. Charles. There he heard of partial scholarships available if he and another church member were interested in a vision trip. A recent church “replant” that itself has planted a local … [Read more...]
FBC Annapolis holds spiritual ‘rehab’ month
ANNAPOLIS – Throughout the month of April, members of the First Baptist Church here have Pastor Dan Pitcher’s permission to put aside their “Sunday Best” and dress in whatever they’d wear during a rehab counseling session. The church body, Pitchers said, is undergoing spiritual “rehab” this month—that is, a revival and evangelistic emphasis using a resource provided by the Missouri Baptist Convention during the Great Commission Conference (GCC) in Springfield earlier this year. Pitchers … [Read more...]
Lord’s Supper goes retro at KC church
KANSAS CITY – Many churches observe the Lord’s Supper in preparation for Easter, but at Northland Baptist Church here, things are going to look a little different on Good Friday as the congregation “breaks bread.” Instead of what has become tradition for many Baptists – crackers and grape juice served in silver trays – that congregation will literally sit down for a communion meal. Co-pastor Rustin Umstattd, who also teaches theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, said the … [Read more...]
Omaha Baptist brings relief to wildfire victims
ASHLAND, Kan. (WNS) – As 58-year-old Greg Gardiner surveyed the devastation from this month’s deadly fires, he described an eerie scene across the Gardiner Angus Ranch north of Ashland, Kan. Friends pitched in to help shoot the last of the fatally maimed cattle over the weekend, drones surveyed the breaks to confirm none were missed, and community volunteers began pulling up charred fence post and rolling up burnt wire. The fire on this ranch claimed more than 500 head of cattle and burned … [Read more...]

JEFFERSON CITY – What do your tithes and offerings do? Through the Cooperative Program, they start new churches, feed the hungry, advance Christian education, provide disaster relief, rescue women from human trafficking, keep more than 8,000 full-time missionaries in the field … and much more. April 9 is Cooperative Program Day for the 50,000 churches and church-type missions of the Southern Baptist Convention. It is a day to celebrate the unique funding process that Southern Baptists have … [Read more...]
Church revitalizers focus strategy in KC
KANSAS CITY - More than 40 revitalization leaders from 13 state Baptist conventions met March 20-21 at Midwestern Seminary to focus on best practices and strategies to collaborate with churches seeking new life or replanting. Gary Mathes, who works in area of church revitalization for the MBC, said that everyone there was all too familiar with the statistics that say 80-85 percent of churches are either plateued or declining. “We all have a great desire to change that trajectory,” he … [Read more...]
Celebrate, strengthen the CP
The Cooperative Program ought not be a sacred cow, but it is close to one for me. Begun by Southern Baptists nearly a century ago, it has proven to be a most effective and enduring way to support our collective ministry and mission work. I often visit with leaders of other evangelical denominations who are envious of the Cooperative Program. And they should be; there is nothing like it in American Protestantism. I was reared in a Southern Baptist church, so I grew up with a general … [Read more...]
‘Not alone:’ MBC cooperation brings Renovation to St. Joseph
ST. JOSEPH – Renovation Church, a Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) church plant here, is renovating itself again—and Pastor Kyle Kormeier couldn’t be more excited. After two-and-a-half years of growth and with roughly 250 people attending each Sunday morning, the church has outgrown its current facilities. So they’ll soon be moving to two services. According to Kormeier, the revamp in their Sunday morning schedule will only help the church bring spiritual renovation to the people of St. … [Read more...]
Haykin: U.S. Christianity ‘flooded with dementia’
FENTON – Southern Baptist and evangelical churches across the United States have been “flooded with dementia,” Michael Haykin, professor of church history and biblical spirituality at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, said during the Midwest regional Southern Baptist Founders Conference at First Baptist Church here, Feb. 28-March 1. Conference-goers gathered under the theme, “The Wittenberg Door,” commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. “Our culture is … [Read more...]
