“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” – Romans 3:23 (NKJV) Many who have worked in the field of education have encountered parents who felt their kids were perfect. When their children got in trouble, parents would often blame “those kids s/he is running around with” or it was someone else who did it and didn’t tell the truth about their child, etc. Why? Could it be that we don’t see our own children clearly? Perhaps we may consider their misbehavior a reflection on … [Read more...]

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptist Convention Executive Director John Yeats declared to hundreds of pro-life advocates gathered on the South lawn of the Missouri Capitol here, April 14, why immorality and abortion still wreak havoc throughout the United States. What, he asked, is missing in our culture? His answer: The fear of the Lord. Yeats was among several speakers featured at the Midwest March for Life here. He and his wife, Sharon, marched with other pro-life advocates around the … [Read more...]
On gratitude
Experts (whoever they are) tell us that one of the great challenges of Covid’s impact last year and its 2021 remnants is the issue of negative emotions. There are plenty of disappointments, changes, deaths, and losses to go around. Whether we articulate it or not, the result is that we all grieve at some level of loss. Some lost more than others. Some key milestones in life were cancelled. Some organizations will never be the same. But we all grieve, and if we choose to internalize our … [Read more...]
After military coup in Myanmar, Southern Baptists called to prayer
EDITOR’S NOTE: * denotes name changed. MYANMAR – Fear, unemployment and poverty covered the southeast Asian nation of Myanmar (formerly Burma) last year, as the COVID-19 pandemic prompted stay-at-home orders and business closures. “People were starving here,” Paul McGeorge*, a Southern Baptist fieldworker in the region, told The Pathway in early March. In some of the nation’s poorest communities, according to Reuters, people ate rats and snakes to survive. “They’ve had almost all their … [Read more...]
Running the race after the death of a loved one
In the Oscar-winning film, “Braveheart,” there is a scene where Queen Isabella whispers a great truth in the ear of the evil English King Longshanks on his death bed. “You see?” the queen says. “Death comes to us all.” Of all the trials and sufferings in my life, none have tested my faith in Christ and my commitment to fulfill God’s purpose for my life than when confronted by death. I did not think there could be anything more painful than watching my 60-year-old daddy draw his last … [Read more...]
Gospel informed memory care
As one ages, the inability to recall information is both common and somewhat disconcerting. “Where did the television remote go?” might simply be a frustration. However, it can also be a symptom of something more serious, especially when mom calls you at work claiming, “The plumber stole my remote.” Nagging questions such as “Did dad take his meds?” and “Did mom remember to turn off the stove?” are health and safety issues that cause family and friends to wonder when, and where, should we … [Read more...]
Church that split over missions continues missions outreach into third century
EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this article incorrectly reported the date for New Hope Church's 200th anniversary celebration. The celebration is, in fact, on Sunday, Sept. 12. (The article was updated at 12:20 p.m., April 27.) ELSBERRY – Two hundred years ago Stout’s Settlement Baptist Church—now New Hope Church—disagreed over missions activities. The vigorous dispute altered the congregation’s history. “There was a group in the church that was anti-missions and a group in support … [Read more...]
Worship, apologetics go hand-in-hand
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Gabriel Zelaya is happy to discuss classical, presuppositional and evidential defenses of the faith, but he’s also ready to go when it comes to an oft overlooked branch of apologetics: worship. Helping others learn to defend the faith and leading them in making a joyful noise unto the Lord are both in Zelaya’s wheelhouse. He is pursuing a goal of becoming a professor of apologetics and also leads worship at Pisgah Baptist Church, here. His interest in the convergence of … [Read more...]
‘Daunting task, but I’ll persevere,’ IMB missionary says
MEDELLIN, Colombia – Travis Burkhalter and his wife, Beth, have served with the IMB in Central and South America since 2010. In those years, their Spanish language skills have steadily improved, and they converse easily with most people in their city of Medellin, Colombia. When God directed Travis and Beth to serve Indigenous people groups, however, they noticed a communication barrier. Many of these groups do not speak Spanish well, and some do not understand it at all. “The people group … [Read more...]
The doctrine of the Incarnation
This is another in a series of excerpts from “What Every Christian Should Know About the Trinity,” available through Amazon and other booksellers. Lorenzo Snow, fifth president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, once claimed the Spirit of God fell upon him and revealed a principle that has become an apt summary of Mormonism: “As man now is, God once was; As God now is, man may be.” In other words, the LDS god of this world once was a mere human who attained deity, showing … [Read more...]
Pisgah Baptist proclaims gospel freedom to people struggling with addiction
LONG LANE – Pisgah Baptist Church is in a community that could be described as “a wide spot in the road.” But that doesn’t stop them from being a vibrant and active Baptist church. The community is in rural Dallas County, in southwest Missouri, and there are no longer any grocery stores or gas stations in Long Lane. The school closed up five years ago. Some would say it is a declining community. But Pastor Bill Autry is optimistic. He says there are people moving into the area, many of … [Read more...]
