Editor's Note: As reported in the June 13 edition of The Pathway, the Strawberry Festival hosted at First Baptist Church here each year draws valuable support for the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH). But, as noted more recently by officials from the MBCH, the Strawberry Festival does not fully fund the ministry. The event provides less than one percent of the MBCH’s annual operating budget and works alongside other means of funding—such as the Cooperative Program and the direct … [Read more...]

Governor calls special session to address major pro-life issue
JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Eric Greitens called a second special session of the Missouri General Assembly this year with the aim of striking down a St. Louis ordinance that makes it an “abortion sanctuary city.” Starting June 12 and continuing as long as needed, the special session will center around stricter regulations on abortion clinics, including requiring annual inspections and that clinics adopt plans for potential medical complications, Greitens said in a statement. Greitens said … [Read more...]
Making the most of the moment
“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15,16 “My, how time flies!” is an expression that most of us have heard. Another year of school has drawn to a close. Children and parents are facing challenges as to how to spend the summer. Some children will enroll in summer school, but even so, there will be more time available to fill with positive activities. Soon, we will be saying, “Where did the summer … [Read more...]
Overwhelmed parents focus of new resource
NASHVILLE (BP) – As the parents of two, Josh and Christi Straub know how exhausting modern parenting can be. Teaching children to know God can feel like one more item on a daunting to-do list. So the Straubs and LifeWay Christian Stores have created TwentyTwoSix, a subscription-based resource to help parents be more confident in the discipleship of their children – without adding time to a jam-packed schedule. “To disciple our kids requires intentionality and creativity,” said Josh … [Read more...]
Americans ‘left-leaning’ on morality
NASHVILLE (BP) – A Gallup poll indicating Americans are more "left-leaning" than ever on 10 of 19 moral issues has been called "humbling" and "chastening" by a Southern Baptist Convention seminary president. In its annual Values and Beliefs survey, the Gallup polling organization found that record percentages of U.S. adults believe it is morally acceptable to use birth control (91%), get divorced (73%), engage in opposite-sex sexual acts outside marriage (69%), engage in same-sex sexual … [Read more...]
MONA threatens religious freedom in Missouri
MONA is an acronym for the cruelly misleading Missouri Nondiscrimination Act. MONA represents a menacing domestic threat to religious freedom. If it passes it could serve as a mechanism for LGBT people to claim discrimination in a variety of ways, triggering lawsuits against religious organizations and people of faith who want to run their businesses according to the dictates of their faith. Think about a baker who refuses to bake a wedding cake for same-sex couples, a photographer who … [Read more...]
Netflix builds buzz with suicide series ‘13 Reasons Why,’ but critics cautious
NASHVILLE (BP) – A streamed Netflix series dramatizing the fictional story of a teen’s suicide has drawn disparate reactions from secular and Christian sectors in the U.S. and abroad as the show’s popularity continues strong. Netflix strengthened viewer warnings May 1 regarding the content of the series, “13 Reasons Why,” after cries of possible “suicide contagion” and the glamorization of suicide spilled from religious, educational and clinical sectors within the U.S. and as far away as … [Read more...]
Religious liberty bill prevails in Mo. Assembly, Gov. Greitens expected to sign to into law
JEFFERSON CITY -- People of faith in Missouri won a tremendous victory late last night (May 8) in the cause for religious liberty – and few people knew it was even happening due to a low-key strategy leading to passage of a bill everyone thought was solely about tort reform. The measure known as Senate Bill 43 (SB 43) restored the religious exemption to the Missouri Human Rights Act (MHRA) after its removal by the Missouri Supreme Court in a 2013 ruling. The Missouri House of … [Read more...]
Governor stands for freedom ahead of Trinity Lutheran case
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens went public with a defense of religious liberty less than one week before the Supreme Court heard a high profile religious liberty case coming out of Missouri. But his actions raised concern among some Supreme Court Justices as to whether the case was still worth addressing. Greitens posted a video, April 13, on his Facebook page and website, announcing that the state of Missouri would no longer discriminate against religious … [Read more...]
Supreme Court hears high profile Mo. church-state case
WASHINGTON – Two Missouri Baptist attorneys were on the legal team presenting arguments last week at what many have called the most important religious liberty case to come before the United States Supreme Court in decades. Michael Whitehead, legal counsel for the Missouri Baptist Convention, and his son, Jonathan Whitehead, joined David Cortman, senior counsel and vice president of U.S. litigation with Alliance Defending Freedom, at the Supreme Court, April 19, where they argued that … [Read more...]
Judge blocks Missouri abortion restrictions
JEFFERSON CITY – An effort to make women safer and minimize abortions in Missouri has been struck down by a federal judge. U.S. District Judge Howard Sachs granted April 19 a preliminary injunction invalidating requirements for the state’s abortion clinics to meet standards for surgical centers and for their doctors to have hospital privileges. The regulations had meant that Planned Parenthood clinics – except for the one in St. Louis – could not perform abortions. As a result of … [Read more...]
