The Executive Board of the 1,900 member-churches of the Missouri Baptist Convention has named a portion of their Jefferson City headquarters as the “Larry Lewis Learning Center.” And for good reason! Some of the highlights of his flow of ministry reveal the following: Following seminary graduation, church “planter” (beginning new churches) in the Northeast, serving as pastor of some of them; Pastor of Tower Grove Baptist Church in St. Louis; President of Hannibal-LaGrange … [Read more...]

The key component for making a difference
I sat next to a young church planter, Joel St-Cyr. Earlier in the conversation, he told how God was moving in such a fashion that the one-year-old church plant was often experiencing 200 in worship attendance in Montreal, the most unreached city in North America. It is still embryonic, but there seems to be a movement of God in this city. When Joel was asked why the church was baptizing so many young adults, his quick, yet thoughtful, answer was “prayer.” Then he unpacked what he meant … [Read more...]
MBCH: Cultural shifts could be future concern
BRIDGETON – The Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) would increasingly rely on its endowment if MBCH president Russell Martin gets his way. Such a move would allow MBCH to rely less and less on funding through contracts from the state of Missouri should there become a time that cultural shifts or legal challenges mean they can no longer receive state funds. Martin made the remarks at the July 22 board meeting at the MBCH main campus in Bridgeton. The third largest care provider in … [Read more...]

OSAGE BEACH – Messengers representing churches affiliated with the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) are gathering Oct. 27-29 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach for their 180th annual meeting. The theme is “Together,” taken from Colossians 2:2, where the apostle Paul writes, “I want their hearts to be encouraged and joined together in love, so that they may have all the riches of assured understanding, and have the knowledge of God’s mystery – Christ.” Wesley Hammond, MBC president and … [Read more...]

KANSAS CITY – A dozen interns sent out by the Missouri Baptist Convention are discovering a world of lostness in Kansas City and St. Louis. Why I hate drywall (and why you should, too)
Standing around with pastors during a break at an associational pastor’s conference, one pastor lamented that his church had stopped growing. When I asked why, he said that his building could only hold so many people. When I asked him why a little thing like drywall would prohibit growth, it was like scales fell off his eyes. “Reaching people for Jesus doesn’t depend on our building size!” he almost shouted. An International Mission Board missionary once challenged me to add up all … [Read more...]

Decade of Missouri baptism data mixed
JEFFERSON CITY – Ten years of baptism reporting by Missouri Baptist churches revealed some bright spots in the midst of overall declines. “Some tend to think that children are all that are being reached for Christ in Missouri,” said Mark Snowden, Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) Evangelism/Discipleship Strategist. “This report gives us reason to celebrate otherwise. At nearly 55 percent, children make up a big chunk, but it’s not overwhelming.” Data from the Annual Church Profile … [Read more...]
