CHICAGO (BP) – Southern Baptist Messianic Jewish believer Ric Worshill received prayer requests from those in danger as fighting between Israel and Hamas raged earlier this month. “Some of our friends and SBC missionaries over there actually had to leave,” Worshill said. “One of them left, with the neighbors upstairs, and just as they left the rockets started coming again. They’ll go back and they won’t know if their homes are there.” Worshill, a Chicago-area police chaplain who serves as … [Read more...]

FIRST PERSON: Darkness is powerful reminder to missionary
CENTRAL ASIA – Last night at sunset the electricity in our neighborhood flickered off. I stalled my dinner prep in hopes that the lights would return quickly, but in the end we enjoyed a candlelit meal and reminisced about our early days on the mission field, when the electricity didn’t go out for hours at a time, but more like days and weeks. In the late 1990s the newly independent Soviet Central Asian countries were still learning how to work together to share resources—kind of like … [Read more...]
Three lives restored in East Asia: Physical healing was just the beginning
EAST ASIA – I recently witnessed God work powerfully through the prayers and faithful obedience of a local East Asian church. One Sunday while Mei*, a faithful believer, led worship for the church’s online meeting, she suffered a serious stroke. After weeks in the ICU, she could not speak intelligibly, could not move her hand well enough to use her phone to text, and because of Covid protocols, her church family wasn’t able to visit. The doctor warned her loved ones that the stroke was … [Read more...]

Prepare yourself and your churches for the missionary task
RICHMOND, Va. (IMB) – We might not know what to expect for 2021, but we do know that God is still moving and Southern Baptists need to be prepared to answer the call to reach the nations. At the IMB, we’ve been so grateful to hear from individuals and churches who remain committed to using their gifts, skills and experiences to share the gospel, make disciples and plant churches. We’re thankful for each of you because there will never be enough missionaries from any country to complete the … [Read more...]

God uses Brazil’s Brandão as Multiplication Maestro
BRAZIL – “Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown” (Matt. 13:8 NIV). Multiplication is inherent to biological life. Thriving beings, such as cells, plants and people, multiply. Likewise, thriving disciples and churches multiply. And the message of Jesus spreads throughout the world. Fernando Brandão, who heads the National Mission Board (JMN) of the Brazilian Baptist Convention (CBB), understands the importance of … [Read more...]
India COVID-19 surge prompts Southern Baptists to prayer, action
FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) – It’s been over 20 years since Rebekah Naylor returned to the United States after decades of work at Bangalore Baptist Hospital. But she still uses personal pronouns like “we” in referring to the efforts of medical staff there battling a horrific COVID-19 surge that is killing more than 3,000 per day. “It’s overwhelming, the sadness at the loss of life when you see the images on TV of people suffering, people struggling to breathe outside of the hospital and the … [Read more...]

St. Louis church sees God work in Kenya, Uganda
ST. LOUIS – The Rock Church of St. Louis and Lead Pastor Tim Cowin believe in “divine appointment.” In the last twelve years, God has been directing the steps of the congregation in a partnership with the people of Kenya and Uganda. Cowin recently returned from a trip to those countries. “When I came to pastor The Rock in ‘98,” Cowin said, “I prayed that we could go beyond the mission trips and establish a long-term relationship with a group of people for missions.” Eight years later, … [Read more...]
