FBC Festus/Crystal City takes Christ to the homeless
FESTUS/CRYSTAL CITY – Missions can conjure up the notion of far-flung locales across the ocean and church planting among an unreached people group. But First Baptist Church, Festus/Crystal City, knows that those right around the corner at home are just as in need of the Gospel. The church engaged in a week of missions called "Hometown Missions,” July 31 through Aug. 3. It was a week of evangelism and service projects to our community that included morning Backyard Bible Clubs in an … [Read more...]
Prayers prepare the way home from Zambian prison
ZAMBIA – The news was good. So exciting, in fact, that it was hard to keep it a secret. The chief officer of the Zambian women’s prison, a local believer, pulled the visiting International Mission Board missionaries into his office. He looked around conspiratorially, burst into a huge smile and said four women who attend their weekly Bible study would soon be released. They’d received a presidential pardon. Then he swore them to secrecy. While Jane Thompson and Kimberley Windham promised … [Read more...]
This is worth the investment
Some days, when you’re monitoring your dollars and cents – you know, that stuff Jesus our Lord commands us to manage while here on earth – you have to ask the questions: Is this a worthy investment for the kingdom? Do my finances show that I am laying up treasures on earth or in heaven? The stuff on earth we can hold in our hands, smell with our noses, or see with our eyes. The treasures in heaven are measured more by the investment we make in people for gospel purposes. The earthly stuff … [Read more...]

Oral Bible stories reach ‘everyday’ people
NORTH AFRICA (IMB) – Riding home on the subway, Patrick Stein casually looked around at fellow passengers. Two things stood out: 1) As a 50-something, he was probably one of the oldest commuters. The median age in this North African city was 26. 2) Everyone had earbuds and stared at their phones, each person in their own private world. The International Mission Board missionary silently wondered what it would take to get people as interested and engaged in Bible stories. As the train … [Read more...]
New Hope, Sedalia, ministers to homeless
SEDALIA – Preparing for a mission trip to New Orleans isn’t always what God wants. New Hope Baptist Church, Sedalia, found God was pointing them in a different way. “I’ve been to the New Orleans French Quarter to minister to the homeless at least five times,” Marc Knapp, pastor, said. “We were preparing to take a group there. I was explaining to them what we would encounter on the trip, but we began to pray, and we discovered that God wanted us to do it here.” “We realized that we were to … [Read more...]
