Article by Kathie Chute, Gateway Seminary SACATON, Ariz. (BP) – As soon as Eric Gibbs stepped onto the Tohono O’odham Nation, one of the largest Native American reservations in the country, he felt a love for the people there. “After seeing the needs of that community, I knew my time in Arizona would be more than just a week,” Gibbs said of the short-term mission trip he took as a college student, a trip he didn’t think much about beforehand. Gibbs returned home to finish his degree and … [Read more...]
Jason Allen: On preaching, public invitations
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following essay was first posted on “For the Church,” a blog published by Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary online at ftc.co. I once preached a series of renewal services at Rosedale Baptist Church in Abingdon, VA. Commonly referred to as a “revival,” or, in previous generations, a “protracted meeting,” each service carried a specifically evangelistic emphasis. I prayed the Lord would be pleased to honor the preaching of His Word, call many to faith in Christ, and … [Read more...]
St. Louis Apostles Church works to bridge racial divide
ST. LOUIS – Delmar Boulevard, also known as The Delmar Divide, crosses St. Louis from east to west and features million-dollar mansions directly to the south and poverty-stricken areas to its north. The neighborhood is also racially divided; south of Delmar is 70 percent white and north of Delmar is 98 percent black. But Missouri Baptist Convention Church Planter Todd Genteman believes that God can unite people divided by such natural barriers. That’s why Genteman, pastor of Apostles … [Read more...]
Husband’s death leads to passion for the lost
ST. LOUIS — Many of her atheist friends think it’s funny that she goes to church, but Sarah Klausner doesn’t mind. She attends local atheist meetings to make new friends and gain understanding of what atheists believe. But sometimes she even adds to the conversation. “They once challenged me with 15 parts of the Bible that they thought was contradictory,” she said. “Each time I showed them how they didn’t contradict. They respect the fact that I’m a follower of Christ who actually knows … [Read more...]
Crossover St. Louis sees increase in faith decisions
ST. LOUIS (BP) -- Southern Baptist volunteers took advantage of the preparations made in advance of Crossover St. Louis and saw those efforts result in 556 St. Louis residents placing their faith in Christ for salvation. As the host city for the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, the St. Louis Baptist Association and executive director Jim Breeden helped create environments where people were receptive to Gospel conversations. The number of salvation decisions during … [Read more...]
Crossover St. Louis: Hundreds come to faith in Christ
ST. LOUIS (BP) – Southern Baptist volunteers reported more than 350 professions of faith in Jesus Christ during Crossover events throughout metro St. Louis this year. One man who made a decision for Christ had been considering suicide just a few days earlier, said Eloy Rodriquez. Rodriquez, a longtime Crossover volunteer, serves as Hispanic pastor of Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, Fla. Gospel will prevail, new missionaries told
RICHMOND, Va. (BP) – When Holly McMickle arrived at a university in Europe as a Journeyman, the task of sharing the Gospel among so many who'd never heard of Jesus overwhelmed the Georgia native. "I thought, 'God, I am just one girl. What can one girl do?'" she recalled during her appointment as an International Mission Board missionary on Tuesday (May 10). "I watched as God moved in the hearts of students, teachers, administrators and families. I learned that it did not matter what one … [Read more...]

Making evangelism a habit – as did Jesus, Paul
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following first appeared, April 18, on Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s “For The Church” blog (ftc.co). Recently I was under conviction when I had the opportunity to share the gospel and did not take it. As I drove home in my car, I prayed that someone would be faithful and share the gospel with the person with whom I had not spoken. Developing godly habits is extremely important. And one of these healthy habits is to share the gospel with those we … [Read more...]
CROSSOVER: St. Louis Baptists ready for volunteers
ST. LOUIS (BP) – The iconic Gateway Arch represents the pathway to the west for most travelers and locals. For Tom Breeden, St. Louis Metro Baptist Association’s (SLMBA) executive director, it’s also the gateway to a mission field in need of hope. That’s why he welcomes the estimated 3,500 Southern Baptist volunteers who will converge on the metropolitan area June 11 for Crossover St. Louis. The scores of travelers who constantly cruise the I-70 corridor through Missouri’s largest city … [Read more...]

Yeats: Orphan care displays gospel
HANNIBAL – Missouri Baptists can display the power and truth of the gospel by caring for orphans and foster children, John Mark Yeats said during the Worldview Conference at Hannibal-LaGrange University here, April 14. “If we will be those Christians who follow the biblical care mandates, we will profoundly disrupt secular worldviews, and we will powerfully demonstrate the truth of the gospel,” Yeats, dean at Midwestern Baptist College, SBC, on the campus of Midwestern Seminary in Kansas … [Read more...]
