The assassination last month of Charlie Kirk brought many Americans face-to-face with a gruesome reality encountered all too often across the globe: namely, that a man might be killed simply for expressing what he believes to be true. “It would be a safe but sad bet that someone, somewhere in the world, is killing someone else at this very moment in the name of religion or ideology,” Os Guinness wrote in the first lines of his 2008 book, The Case for Civility. During the past century, … [Read more...]
It’s okay to need each other
When you’re having trouble sleeping, why is it you can turn over and forget what to do with your arms? Like they’re just in a tangle and you’re thinking things like, “Wait, that arm doesn’t go there,” and “That one doesn’t bend that direction,” and “Did I have arms when I went to bed?” Arms akimbo, feeling like just a big ol’ jumble of uncomfortably awkward "limbage." Not to be all up in arms about it, but I’m up. And I have all these arms. A friend said I should just forget about it and … [Read more...]
Satan’s date with destiny
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. The Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Massachusetts is well into its third decade of operation and has yet to report a breakout. The center has earned its reputation as the most technologically advanced and secure prison in the world – even more secure than Russia’s notorious Black Dolphin Prison, or the ADX prison in … [Read more...]
Biblical view of suffering a bulwark against assisted suicide
Despite the attention that abortion rightly receives among pro-life advocates, the “culture of death” has expanded beyond the womb in Western societies. Consider this disturbing example: Cases of assisted suicide and euthanasia have mushroomed in Canada – where, according to the BBC, nearly one in 20 deaths were “medically assisted” in 2023. That is 15,300 deaths out of 320,000. And some Canadian government leaders are now proposing that euthanasia be available to children and teenagers, … [Read more...]
All ‘thinks’ considered
My husband has this baffling ability to say goodnight and then go to sleep. Just like that. Right to sleep. Practically on demand. Does anyone else feel like he has some explaining to do? What is this superpower? What kind of surgery would I need to have to get it? Furthermore, how is he able to work all his overthinking into his schedule? What, he covers it all during the day? That seems impractical. The other night I found myself lying awake, wondering what someone thought about … [Read more...]
What is success in ministry, life?
If I were to ask you, “What is success?”, how would you answer? Would your answer include something tangible, like possessions or gadgets? Would it be quantifiable, like income or position? Would it be relational, like praise and affirmation from others? Would it be generational, as in legacy or notoriety? We all live with a guiding metric for success. What we believe to be true success guides, motivates, and drives us. Our decision-making paradigm comes from our understanding of success. … [Read more...]
The eternal fire
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. In Matthew 24-25, Jesus is on the Mount of Olives with his disciples, responding to their questions about the future destruction of the temple and the end of the age. He closes out the Olivet Discourse with the parable of the sheep and goats, revealing the preparation of a final place of judgment for Satan, evil spirits, and … [Read more...]
Pursue life of learning from God’s Word, works
“To give children a good education in manners, arts and science, is important; to give them a religious education is indispensable; and an immense responsibility rests on parents and guardians who neglect these duties.” – Noah Webster A man of deep Christian faith, as well as one of America’s Founding Fathers, Noah Webster believed the education of children was essential for the newborn United States of America. By his example, he also displayed the value of lifelong learning. After all, … [Read more...]
Thrown into the lake of fire
This is another in a series of excerpts from What Every Christian Should Know About the Return of Jesus, released by High Street Press and available at Amazon.com. While followers of Jesus enjoy everlasting life in glorified bodies on a restored earth, the ultimate destiny of the wicked is the same habitation created for Satan and demons: gehenna. It’s a place in English we call “hell,” and a place Jesus and the New Testament writers describe in various ways, among them: outer darkness … [Read more...]
FIRST-PERSON: The day the ‘Prince of Darkness’ died
EDITOR'S NOTE: This article first appeared on Baptist Press. Rich Bitterman is pastor of Cedar Ridge Baptist Church, Galena, Mo. I was 16 the first time I heard “Mr. Crowley.” The way it began … haunting organ, crashing guitar … grabbed me by the throat. I didn’t know what the lyrics meant. I didn’t care. I was angry, curious, spiritually empty, and Ozzy Osbourne sounded like someone who had seen behind the curtain. He felt untouchable. Immortal. A man who drank from the shadows … [Read more...]
Trusting the One who calls us
On Thursday, June 26, 2025, Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine held a press briefing to explain how the United States bombed three nuclear sites in Iran. The general’s description of the planning and execution of Operation Midnight Hammer was fascinating. He detailed how the sites were selected, the training involved to prepare for such a mission, and the anticipated impact of the massive 30,000lb GBU-57 bombs. Throughout the years, I’ve listened to multiple briefings, but I don’t … [Read more...]
Child-ing like a boss
Sometimes I think no one can child like I can child. It’s entirely possible I can child better than an actual child. Don’t get me wrong. I brush my teeth and rarely jump in mud puddles (though that last one is more about my shoes than my maturity). I can slurp spaghetti without even being dared to. Upbeat praise music in the room? I’m going to dance like a four-year-old. (The dancing is very happy but altogether unskilled and possibly a little disturbing.) Bubble wrap? I’m going to pop … [Read more...]
