TROY – There’s another voice promising to bring a biblical perspective to cases that come before the Missouri Commission on Human Rights. Gov. Mike Parson appointed Jonathan Hayashi, music and worship pastor of First Baptist Church, Troy and a Pathway columnist, to the commission, June 17. He was also named the vice chair of the commission. The ten-seat commission fields discrimination complaints in matters of housing, employment, and places of public accommodation based on race, … [Read more...]
High court upholds only part of Indiana pro-life law
WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Supreme Court upheld May 28 an Indiana law that requires the humane disposal of aborted babies but refused to weigh in on the same state's ban on abortions based solely on ethnicity, sex or disability. The high court's refusal to review Indiana's appeal regarding its 2016 prohibition on abortions of certain classes of unborn children left standing a Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals decision that invalidated the measure. The action also rejected requests by some … [Read more...]
MBC leaders grateful for passage of Missouri pro-life legislation
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC) leaders are grateful for the passage of a state pro-life bill that contains the most expansive restrictions to abortion in the state’s history. “This piece of legislation ... was important— not for legislators, not for the governor, not for Missouri economics—but for yet-to-be-born children,” MBC Executive Director John Yeats told The Pathway. “My family and I are very grateful for the fortitude of our pro-life Senators and our pro-life … [Read more...]
Pastors ready for fallout of legalized sports gambling
NASHVILLE (BP) – Americans are expected to wager more than $8 billion on this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament. But according to a new study released March 20, don’t bet on many pastors joining in. LifeWay Research's survey – conducted Aug. 29–Sept. 11 – found most pastors believe it is morally wrong to bet on sports, while few agree it should be legalized nationwide. Though if sports gambling does become legal in their state, many pastors are already planning their response. "The … [Read more...]

(See The Pathway's review here.) "Unplanned" also may have played a role in the Georgia state legislature's adoption of a fetal heartbeat bill March 29, the film's co-directors said, adding lead actress Ashley Bratcher has been invited to appear with Georgia Gov. … [Read more...]
MBTS’s Strachan: Now is the time to stand for truth about family, gender
FENTON – Facebook users can now choose among more than 50 gender options when setting up their account, Owen Strachan told participants of the Founders Midwest Conference gathered at the First Baptist Church here, Feb. 26-27. Among the gender options, he added, is the “felisgender,” which is described as a “small, cat-like gender.” These gender options are symptomatic of a “confused age,” when young people are called upon to be part of a “great human identity project that no one else can … [Read more...]

Military draft ruling a ‘blow’ to gender equality
NASHVILLE (BP) – A federal judge in Texas has ruled the all-male military draft unconstitutional, a move that some Baptist leaders say is a blow to gender equality, not a win for it. Judge Gray H. Miller of Federal District Court in the Southern District of Texas said earlier this week that the "time has passed" for debate on whether women belong in the military. In 2015 the Pentagon lifted all restrictions for women in service, making them eligible for combat. It follows that if … [Read more...]
