EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the fourth in a series of excerpts from the new MBC resource, “The Last Apologist: A Commentary on Jude for Defenders of the Christian Faith,” available at mobaptist.org/apologetics. * * * * Jude writes in verse 3 of his epistle, “I found it necessary to write and exhort you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all.” The Holy Spirit has stirred Jude’s heart, causing him to grieve over the manner in which … [Read more...]
The tool of drool & thirsting well
No kidding, I had this very conversation with my daughter the other day: Kaley: Know what I found just now on Pinterest? Peanut butter cup gooey butter cake. Me: I just gained three pounds hearing you speak those words. Kaley: I just lost three pounds in drool. After I thought about it—well, after I laughed, and then after I thought about it—I decided she might actually have something there. The next diet craze? How about “Slobber Yourself Thin!” I don’t know why that shouldn’t work … [Read more...]
MBTS prof: CSB makes ‘good translation better’
KANSAS CITY – The new Christian Standard Bible (CSB) has made a good translation better, according to Bible scholar Stephen Andrews. “It was taking a very good translation and evaluating it in places where we could make it better, based upon faithfulness to the original languages and readability,” said Andrews, professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Andrews served on the team that produced the CSB, which is a revision of the earlier Holman … [Read more...]
More faith, less fluff
I accidentally put one of my favorite “lay flat to dry” sweaters in the dryer. Somewhere in the last fluff cycle, somebody must’ve slipped in and traded it for some kind of little teddy bear sweater. What am I supposed to do with this? I guess now I have to buy a little teddy bear. Relatedly, I’ve heard the same thing happens with invisibility cloaks. People don’t tell you not to machine dry those things. Or maybe it’s on the label. But reading an invisible label? Not easy. And you still … [Read more...]
Dear anxious mom, trust the sovereign God
I was sitting on the conveyor belt in the baggage claim area of the airport in Jackson, Miss., when the tornadoes came through last fall. The airport staff had directed us to take shelter there until the storms passed. I had already heard of the casualties in Arkansas, children who lost parents, parents who lost babies. My own mother, meanwhile, was on the road somewhere in the storm trying to get home. As I sat there in the darkness, the familiar emotions of fear and worry gripped me. … [Read more...]
What really counts?
People get pretty caught up in the thread count of their sheets these days. I still say the crumb count is a lot bigger deal. Not that I’m one to snack in bed much, mind you. Mostly because I’m not a big fan of sheets that double as an exfoliator. But just so you know I’m not going to be legalistic on the topic, everything changes in the family room. My sofa? Let the exfoliation begin. I don’t even know what kind of crumbs are stuffed between the couch cushions. I’m pretty sure, though, … [Read more...]

KANSAS CITY (BP) – B&H Academic has launched the first of a 12-volume series of previously unpublished sermons by the famed British preacher Charles H. Spurgeon. "The Lost Sermons of C.H. Spurgeon" series is being researched and edited by Christian T. George, assistant professor of historical theology and curator of the Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, which hosted a luncheon for the launch at its Kansas City, Mo., campus. The first volume includes a series … [Read more...]
Bible Drill seeks to up kids’ scriptural literacy
SPRINGFIELD – Don Wilson has seen the difference the Word of God makes in childrens’ lives. The volunteer from Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Springfield is the go-to person for Bible Drill in Missouri. “The thing I’ve always loved about Bible Drill is it teaches kids to use the Bible,” he said. “They open it, they learn key passages, they learn where things are. If they stay in it, in three years they’ll learn 30 key passages that they can find at any time. They learn the books of the … [Read more...]
Greek resources available for preachers
NASHVILLE (BP) – Veteran Bible scholars and preachers Andreas Köstenberger, Robert Plummer and Jerry Vines have recommended several resources to help preachers grow in their understanding of New Testament Greek. • "Daily Dose of Greek": Vines said he uses this online video resource developed by Plummer on a daily basis. It includes a new two-minute video each day, in which Plummer translates and discusses one verse in the Greek New Testament. • "Going Deeper with the Greek New Testament": … [Read more...]
Why does theology matter?
I can remember having weekly vocabulary tests in Elementary school. Nothing was scarier than coming across a word that was long and complicated. As I became older, I realized that one word was misunderstood and feared throughout many of our evangelical churches – the term “theology”. Many Christians today have preconceived notions about what “theology” means, as well as its suitability for use in church. In apparent defiance, many well intentioned Christians claim that the Bible alone is … [Read more...]
Compassion: ministry’s missing link
SPRINGFIELD – Ed Stetzer believes a main reason more people are not witnessing to the lost is a lack of compassion. Stetzer, executive director for the Billy Graham Center for Evangelism at Wheaton College, indicated many people have a saving faith in Jesus Christ, and many believe those without faith should be reached, but lack their own conviction in carrying out personal evangelism. Stetzer shared Matthew 9:35-38 where Jesus told the disciples to pray to the Lord of the harvest for the … [Read more...]
The transformational power of the Spirit
As followers of the Lord Jesus, there is something we must believe. It is part of the package that became a reality the moment we surrendered our lives to Christ. Here it is: “The Holy Spirit that caused Jesus to rise from the grave is the same Holy Spirit that lives within every follower of the Lord Jesus and is transforming us by the renewing of our minds.” Because of the Holy Spirit within us, none of us can afford to harbor things in the mind that are not compatible with what God … [Read more...]
