One of my favorite films, the musical classic “Fiddler on the Roof,” depicts the joys and sorrows of a small community of Jews living around the year 1905 in the fictional Ukrainian village of Anatevka. From sunrise to sunset, the endearing protagonist Tevye lives, with his kith and kin, like a fiddler on the roof, “trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune without breaking his neck.” The film powerfully depicts the longing of these Jewish “strangers in a strange land,” exiled from the … [Read more...]
Disaster Relief crews minister after tornado
LINNEUS – Significant damage was caused by a tornado that hit in the night of May 6, and Missouri Disaster Relief (MODR) crews responded. John Mohler of Bethany, who headed the MODR incident command, said city officials of the Linn County town of less than 300 people felt 90 percent of the properties were affected. There was damage to machine sheds and garages, and numerous trees were down. Power was out for two days, but there were no injuries or casualities. There were 14 chainsaw jobs … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptists embark on island adoptions
by Tessa Sanchez/IMB CAMIGUIN, The Philippines (IMB) – Adopting an island sounds like something a millionaire or movie star might do, but that’s exactly what nine Southern Baptist associations in Missouri did. In partnership with Filipino Southern Baptist churches in North America, the associations adopted the island of Camiguin in the Philippines in a commitment to seeing the gospel permeate the island. Three years after the associations adopted Camiguin, new believers meet regularly to … [Read more...]
Fellowship of Wildwood’s Living Water Academy aims at academic education, spiritual growth
WILDWOOD – Waiting lists can be a sign of growth and success, but they can also reveal a need. This was the experience of Living Water Academy (LWA), a ministry of Fellowship of Wildwood (FOW). “At the end of last school year,” Ryan Bowman, lead pastor, said, “we had a waiting list of new students at historic levels. The only way to admit these new students was to add classes. Thankfully a local school district had two classroom buildings for sale. These new buildings provided us with … [Read more...]
Running the race: Jefferson City pastor finishes Boston Marathon
BOSTON – The Bible instructs Christians to “run the race with endurance,” but even the writer of Hebrews would have to admit that even the thought of running 26.2 miles is enough to make one’s legs sore. A physical marathon may not have some grand spiritual significance for the Hebrews metaphor, but Taylor Whitmore, lead pastor of Southridge Baptist Church in Jefferson City, crossed the finish line at the April 17 Boston Marathon and ran that race with endurance: all 26.2 miles up and down … [Read more...]

Legacies of Commitment
My wife and I were blessed to enjoy an example of marital commitment that spanned over 130 years between her parents and my parents. While some would say, “but times have changed,” these couples weathered the swinging 60s, tumultuous 70s and the economic challenges of the 1980s. While the accumulation of years has slowed by the passing of Julie’s mother, the example of our parent’s marital commitment shines as an example to their children and grandchildren. While our parents walked similar … [Read more...]

Missourians teach book of Revelation to pastors in Nicaragua
MANAGUA, Nicaragua – When Missouri pastors Lane Harrison and Chris Williams signed up to teach and train pastors in Nicaragua, they didn’t know they’d be signing up for one of the more challenging books of the Bible to understand and preach through: Revelation. But all Scripture – including each part that takes effort to understand – is God-breathed, so the Missouri pastors committed to teach Revelation during a mid-March trip to the Central American nation. Harrison, lead pastor of … [Read more...]
