CONROE, Texas (BP) – Jeff Foshee was at the end of his rope. Haunted by depression, fear, and his own misfortunes, he felt he could not hold on any longer. Thanks to a friend’s guidance, Foshee’s next step landed him at the Houston-area Under Over Fellowship in Conroe. “When I first came to a Sunday service with Under Over, something clicked. It just felt like home,” Foshee says. “I have been here ever since.” Jerry Vineyard, meanwhile, also found himself at the end of his rope. After … [Read more...]
The sufficiency of Scripture
This is the last in a series of columns on the inspiration, inerrancy, infallibility, and sufficiency of Scripture. When Christians say the Bible is true, we often use terms to describe the manner in which God has spoken to us through His written Word. One such term is “sufficient.” But what does that mean? All the words God intended “The sufficiency of Scripture means that Scripture contained all the words of God he intended his people to have at each stage of redemptive history, and … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptists send 1,247 relief buckets to Africa
JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri Baptists filled 1,247 Baptist Global Response buckets packed with supplies during 2015, and the majority of those have gone to Mozambique, Togo, Burkina Faso, and Ivory Coast, with the latest shipment currently being prepared to go to Cape Town, West Africa. Prior to the emphasis in 2015, Missouri Baptists had a part in sending about 300 buckets for this project. Since 2013, more than 8,800 buckets have been filled and sent to Africa from all over the United … [Read more...]
What the Bible is and why it matters
I was in front of a group of Christians fielding questions about the nature of Scripture recently – what the Bible is and why it matters. I was struck by how many in the group, though they believed and appreciated the Bible, lacked sufficient grounding in the Holy Scriptures. They did not really grasp what the Bible is and why it matters. Do you? While most Americans grant the Bible unique status, and most churchgoers think of it – to some degree – as a book from God, confessional … [Read more...]
Generous tip leads to salvation, baptism
LEBANON – It was initially meant as a random act of kindness, but the $1,000 tip First Baptist Church, Lebanon gave Robert Marsh on a $10.74 pizza on Christmas Eve started a conversation that ultimately led to his conversion and baptism. A video posted to the church’s Facebook page that has been viewed more than 13,000 times tells the story (Search for “FBC Lebanon” in Facebook’s search bar to watch the video). “What’s the biggest tip you’ve ever received?” Matt Taylor, pastor of First … [Read more...]
Pronounced dead at 13, evangelist now calls churches to revival
LIBERTY – Scott Hamby, 13, died in July, 1985. The injuries from his bicycle and pick-up truck crash were severe: a fractured skull, head lacerations, a pelvic girdle broken in two places, seven broken ribs, a collapsed lung, two broken vertebrae, a damaged spleen and liver, and a broken thumb. More than three hours into surgery, doctors pronounced him dead and gave the news to his family. His father began phoning friends and family members. But, approximately 15 minutes later, the … [Read more...]
Don’t miss a beat in loving others
Now that all my children are adults, I can tell you that raising the five of them was very often like a game of full-contact musical chairs. Without the chairs. It wasn’t so much about the wrestling—though believe me, there was plenty of that. But it was more about the music. Always even more of that. All three of my sons are in music ministries now and the two daughters are musical too. When Daniel, my youngest, was around twelve, he started drumming. He drummed on tables. He drummed on … [Read more...]
A mess of baby powder, sin
Our son Andrew really likes baby powder, sugar and salt. The only place he doesn’t like them is in the containers they usually come in. He loves for them to cover the floor, bed, toys, clothes, dishes and basically every surface and room in the house. I am still amazed at how quickly the latest supply of baby powder wound up on him, all over our bedroom, one of our cats and parts of the hallway. I had briefly turned away from him to fold some clothes when all of a sudden I smelled a very … [Read more...]
Guiding our children through election years
What a challenge we have at this time in our nation’s history to teach our children God’s way! A recent cartoon shows a mom and dad looking at their children as each child called the other a liar. The mom looked at the dad and said, “It was your idea to have them watch the debate!” Most will readily agree that children learn much by example. As parents and teachers try to teach children to love and respect their country, how can this be done with the example our leaders are setting … [Read more...]
The infallibility of Scripture
This is the third in a series of columns on the inspiration, inerrancy, infallibility, and sufficiency of Scripture. When Christians say the Bible is true, we often use terms to describe the manner in which God has spoken to us through His written Word. One such term is “infallible.” But what does that mean? Incapable of error By infallibility, we mean the original manuscripts are incapable of error. This is because the Bible is inspired, or God-breathed, resulting in “autographs” that … [Read more...]
Missouri Baptists partner in Italy
VENETO, Italy – From the moment he arrived in Belluno, Italy, Jeremy Sells soaked in everything he saw and heard. And this province with a population of nearly 200,000 people had plenty to take in, since it is located in the Alps of northern Italy and in a country that has Christian monuments dating back hundreds—if not more than 1,000—years. But nothing prepared Sells, pastor of First Baptist Church, Scott City, for a meeting he and his mission team had with a local evangelical pastor. … [Read more...]
Noland Road offers gospel transformation
INDEPENDENCE – Noland Road Baptist Church here has partners with ministries around the nation and around the globe to reach people with the gospel, but they also come alongside more than a dozen local ministries to help transform lives in their own community. On the local level, these “Global Focus Ministries” include Lullaby of Hope, a member-started ministry that reaches out to women who struggle with infertility or who are grieving because of a miscarriage, still birth or infant death … [Read more...]
