“Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints” (Psalm 116:15). This month I celebrated another decade of life. With this milepost, I am another year closer to my homecoming. In February, The Baptist Home changed its name to Baptist Homes & Healthcare Ministries. This change forecast the addition of Hospice, a ministry designed to ensure those in the final season of this life arrive home safe. This month, Dr. David Sundeen, Executive Director of Missouri Baptist Hospice … [Read more...]
Pull up a chair, help change a life
Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) is engaged with tragic stories of families or children from hard places. There are children impacted by abuse or neglect, adults dealing with substance abuse issues or domestic abuse situations, struggling marriages and families on the verge of collapse. Often these children and families are found right in your community. Have you ever wondered what you can do to make a difference? Sometimes you see the people in your church who are hurting but … [Read more...]
Will the real neighbors please stand up, Sept. 28?
The planning is almost over. It is nearly time for residents to begin hosting parties and doing good deeds for their neighbors as part of National Good Neighbor Day on Sept. 28. Some neighbors will be setting up a canopy in the yard in a few days, firing up the grill, and hosting block parties for their nearest neighbors. With all the rush of summer and a new school year underway, this is a good time of year to ask, will the real neighbors please stand up? A real neighbor understands the … [Read more...]
Serve God where you are
EDITOR'S NOTE: Andy Helton serves as vice president of finance at the Missouri Baptist Children's Home. As things are slowly getting back to normal, I can’t help but think about the past year and a half. Our normalcy has been turned upside down and inside out and we were forced into a “new normal.” We all had a lot of time to reflect on missing the normal in our life. Some people have had some dark times and others have basked in the warm glow of the sun. I would also guess that some have … [Read more...]
You can choose how your tax dollars are spent
When I was a Regional Representative in NE-MO and the St. Louis metro area I had the opportunity to work with many Missouri Baptist churches, church members and church leaders. These people of faith became my dear friends and one of the things I miss most is having fewer opportunities to interact with them throughout the week and on Sundays. I often spoke at churches on the weekends because at Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) we believe that Missouri Baptists deserve 1) to hear how … [Read more...]
Put aside excuses, be a neighbor
Recently, I was told that people need a tangible reason for neighboring. Knowing that it impacts your health – for example -- could be one of those reasons. Plenty of research reveals the importance of face-to-face interaction on our mental and physical health. Neighboring is also essential to do something with others to make the world a better place. If you are civically minded but ignoring your immediate neighbors, that isn’t very honest. Still, others understand that Jesus commanded … [Read more...]
The five pillars of progressivism
EDITOR’S NOTE: Katelynn Basnight is daughter to Jacob Basnight, pastor of First Baptist Church, Mt. Leonard. In the late 19th century German universities were introducing five new ideas to the world which I like to refer to as the five pillars of progressivism. They were Modernism, Evolution, Modern Psychology, Marxism, and Progressive Education. These atheistic ideas found their way to America by the early 1920s and began the process of tearing at the fabric of our Christian heritage. A … [Read more...]
Why are new mission hymns so few?
Quick, name a recent song celebrating missions. Not so easy, is it? I was posed with the question a few months ago, “Why are there no new hymns on missions?” This is an interesting question, and the answer can truly only be speculative. However, to assert opinion, it behooves us to gather as much empirical data as possible. First, there has been a substantial drop in missions hymns in our denominational hymnal. The 1940 Broadman Hymnal had 23 hymns listed as “Missionary Hymns.” The 1974 … [Read more...]
May is National Foster Care Month
Since 1988, the month of May has been dedicated to advocacy and awareness regarding the needs of children, youth, families and professionals whose lives are involved in the system. Although it originally began as a month dedicated to acknowledging the good works of foster parents, the mission and theme has expanded to promote overall awareness of the foster care system. Why is National Foster Care Month important? Because as believers, we know the Lord asks us to care for the least of … [Read more...]
Churches shouldn’t have a fourth wall
It’s the late ’70s and you’re an up-and-coming television host with a new morning show. You’ve booked an icon in Judy Collins. She comes on the stage, takes a deep breath, sings into the microphone … nothing. What do you do? If you’re David Letterman and crew, you use it as an opportunity. Letterman came onto the stage and said, “You know, ladies and gentlemen, what you have just witnessed is a screw up.” Letterman’s biographer noted: “And instead of getting angry, Letterman came across … [Read more...]
The gift of Alleluia
“Christ the Lord is risen today, alleluia!” As we prepare our hearts for the Easter season, let us momentarily consider the gift of “alleluia.” The spelling “alleluia” is the Latin form that was first penned by Saint Jerome in the fourth century. It westernized the Hebrew term “Hallelujah” which means “Praise” (hallel) the “Lord” (Jah). While the first Passover in Egypt didn’t include the term “Hallelujah” per se, we do know that they worshipped as instructed during this feast (Exod … [Read more...]
The LIGHT House provides pro-life ministries
The LIGHT House has been providing Christ-centered Pro-Life ministries since 1985. Throughout the years the services offered and programs available have grown and evolved to meet the most pressing needs of our community. Currently, we offer three primary programs: residential maternity care, outreach ministries and adoption services. But as the needs of the community have changed, our focus on LIFE has not. The LIGHT House continues to fulfill our mission statement: The LIGHT House is … [Read more...]
