JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri has joined 22 other states in filing a friend-of-the-court brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a lower-court ruling that a federal anti-discrimination law regarding sex covers gender identity. Also joining in the brief were several faith organizations, including the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). The high court’s ruling could have a profound impact on churches, public schools and religious … [Read more...]
Who can solve nation’s challenges?
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – America’s got problems and needs to talk. But few Americans agree on who can best lead a conversation about the nation’s woes, according to a new report from Nashville-based LifeWay Research. Less than a quarter (23 percent) would turn to the office of the U.S. president. About 1 in 10 would turn to the nation’s preachers (11 percent) or to college professors (10 percent). “Almost no one would ask a musician or pro athlete,” says Scott McConnell, executive director … [Read more...]
Five things a church can do to halt the holocaust
Science has long since outstripped the infamous Roe v. Wade decision of 1973. On Oct. 11, 2016, Oxford University released a study indicating that a baby’s heart begins to beat around the 16th day after conception. By using lab mice, they confirmed that the hearts of baby mice start to beat in 7.5 days. Then, extrapolating to the human anatomy, a baby’s heart begins beating on the 16th day, providing oxygen and nutrients to this living person. The unborn child has his or her own DNA and … [Read more...]
Nation’s top abortion provider files lawsuit against Missouri
JEFFERSON CITY – Christians throughout Missouri rallied to support the state’s pro-life laws after Missouri affiliates of Planned Parenthood – the nation’s top abortion provider – filed a federal lawsuit, Nov. 23, challenging Missouri laws that require abortion clinics to meet the medical standards of surgical clinics and that require their doctors to hold hospital privileges. The lawsuit came after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down similar laws in Texas. In a 5-3 opinion, the high court … [Read more...]
New labor laws loom for MBCH
BRIDGETON - It was a largely positive meeting, but trustees for Missouri Baptist Children’s Home remain uncertain about how changing labor law will affect their ministry and the lives of Missouri’s most vulnerable foster children. The discussion happened at the Oct. 11 board meeting at the MBCH campus in Bridgeton. A consequential election for our nation’s judiciary
To modify the book title of a conservative classic written by the incomparable English professor Richard Weaver, elections have consequences. That fact will play-out Nov. 8. Hanging in the balance is control of the U.S. Supreme Court, all 13 U.S. Circuit Appellate Courts, hundreds of federal and state judicial appointments and our state’s attorney general. Voters will chart, for decades to come, one of two courses for our federal and state judiciaries. Will we have judges who uphold the … [Read more...]

Clergy offer lesson in civil disobedience
As we think about our morally degenerating society and what it means for the future of freedom of religion and freedom of speech, what are we to make of the 22 clergy recently found guilty of trespassing while protesting at the State Capitol? The incident raises serious questions about First Amendment rights and what the Bible has to say about civil disobedience, especially in light of the LGBT’s push for restrictions on what churches and religious institutions can do and say. We must … [Read more...]
