CHARLESTON – In the spiritual darkness of southeast Missouri, Shining Light Ministries in Charleston offers a ray of hope. “God led us to start this in a small town in the middle of sin, crime, violence, hunger, and extreme poverty, Children are raising themselves. Shining Light believes Jesus is the answer to all these issues,” said Rev. Dean Wallace, director. “This is a multi-generational problem. We believe if this chain will ever be broken, it will start with the children.” The … [Read more...]
Does the Bible teach Purgatory?
This is the sixth in a series of articles on biblical terms that describe the afterlife and the unseen world. Do some Christians undergo purification from the stain of sin between death and entrance into heaven? Many who answer yes to that question embrace the doctrine of purgatory, which became official Roman Catholic dogma in A.D. 1438. Simply stated, purgatory is a place or state of suffering where the dead bound for heaven achieve the holiness necessary to enter into the presence of … [Read more...]
9/11 called catalyst for missions to Muslims
NEW YORK (BP) – When radical Islamic terrorists brought down the World Trade Center's Twin Towers 15 years ago, they didn't realize their actions would also help bring down walls to reaching Muslims with the Gospel. But that's exactly what happened. In the years since Sept. 11, 2001, the number of Unengaged, Muslim Unreached People Groups (UMUPGs) in the world has decreased by nearly 20 percent, from 1,333 in 2001 to 1,077 today, according to statistics provided by Vision 5:9, a … [Read more...]
‘Sad’ Russian anti-evangelism law ends a ministry
ORYOL, Russia (BP) -- Missionaries Donald and Ruth Ossewaarde always suspected their Gospel ministry in Oryol, Russia, wouldn't last when they began in 2002, he told Baptist Press by telephone from his home in the central Russian town of 320,000. But he had not expected to be among the first people arrested under Russia's new law prohibiting organizations from evangelizing outside church walls and without a government permit. Two weeks after police interrupted Ossewaarde's Sunday … [Read more...]
‘Horse whisperer’ proclaims gospel during state fair
SEDALIA – Horse whisperer David Frazier doesn't really like the term "horse whisperer." "That's kind of Hollywood. I haven't even seen the movie," he said. He was referring to a 1998 film starring Robert Redford, who plays the role of a horse trainer with a remarkable gift for understanding horses and helps an injured teenager and her horse back to health following a tragic accident. "But we use the term here because people understand what it means, and it communicates to the … [Read more...]
St. Louis pastors plan for more church plants
ST. LOUIS (BP) – Kenny “KP” Petty has been there and done that, so what he says rings true to others who are as he was. Too busy with his gang life to finish high school, he was shot for the first time at 17, and then again at 18. He went to jail at 19, facing (later acquitted of) an attempted murder rap. Today, not quite 20 years later, Petty and co-pastor/rapper Kyle Hubbard are in the fourth year of planting The Gate church in University City, an older, poverty-pockmarked neighborhood … [Read more...]
Scholars refute Times transgenderism op-ed
NASHVILLE (BP) – A New York Times op-ed suggesting the Old Testament supports transgenderism has been classified by Southern Baptist seminary professors as a mischaracterization of Hebrew grammar and theology. “It should not surprise any of us that if we want to find something in Scripture, then we will twist it to say what we want it to say,” Paul Wegner, professor of Old Testament studies at Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention, told Baptist Press. Mark Sameth, a Reform … [Read more...]

Few pastors asked to perform same-sex weddings following SCOTUS ruling
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (LifeWay) – More than 100,000 same-sex couples have tied the knot since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages nationwide last year. But for preachers, being asked to do a same-sex wedding remains rare. A new survey by Nashville-based LifeWay Research found 11 percent of Protestant senior pastors have been asked to perform a same-sex wedding. Baptist pastors (1 percent) are the least likely to say they were asked to perform a same-sex wedding. … [Read more...]
A look into Tartarus
This is the fifth in a series of articles on biblical terms that describe the afterlife and the unseen world. If Sheol or Hades is the temporary abode of deceased people, is there a transitory place of punishment for some demons? It seems the answer is yes, in a place the New Testament refers to as Tartarus. Tartarus is mentioned only once, in 2 Peter 2:4. Many translations render it “hell,” including the King James Version and the New American Standard Bible, while others, like the … [Read more...]
