Vandalism damages Warsaw church amid holiday season
WARSAW – The New Home Baptist Church sits outside of Warsaw, just down the road from the Baptist Ridge Camp of Fellowship Baptist Association. In late November they were plagued by a series of increasingly drastic vandalism incidents. The damages from four separate incidents are estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars, according to church officials. Recently they had been experiencing a string of fairly minor incidents, but then damages were getting more severe. A church … [Read more...]
Harrison Baptist Association sees God at work
BETHANY – God has his ways for working in various circumstances within the Harrison Baptist Association’s area. For example, when a windstorm hit in June, Harrison Baptist Association Disaster Relief was able to respond “boots on the ground a half-hour after the storm,” said Director of Missions and Northwest Missouri Regional Disaster Relief coordinator John Mohler. In an odd twist of God’s work, one house damaged had a Hispanic resident, and there happened to be a Spanish-speaking … [Read more...]
‘This is really, really important’: 6-year-old issues missions offering challenge
Ethan Gee: "I’m trying to raise 1,000 and 100 dollars for missions...but, I only have $6." Like most boys at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 6-year-old Ethan Gee wanted to win the penny war against the girls. “Like really, really, really bad,” he agonized. “The girls always win.” He asked his mother, Sarah, if he could take some pennies from his shark-shaped bank for the contest. They emptied the coins on the table. As they pulled out pennies, they talked … [Read more...]
You can make a difference in state mission partnerships
Several years ago I was invited to join a small group of men to help lead the annual church planters retreat in Montana. I was apprehensive because our church did not have the resources to help fund the retreat in a significant way. Beyond that, I was not sure I had any particular wisdom or expertise to offer, since I was not a church planter. As I flew home after the first year much of my apprehension had disappeared. What I came to realize is that state-to-state partnerships have less to … [Read more...]
‘Rapidly growing’ Burmese church aims to reach youth, raise leaders
PURDY – The year 2020 was a difficult one for churches across the nation. With the emergence of COVID-19, many church members chose to stay home and worship online, hoping to hinder the virus’ spread through social distancing. Outreach ministries were put on hold and gatherings were suspended. Despite coronavirus concerns, a small group of Burmese immigrants began gathering for worship in 2020 and, today, Farm Chin Baptist Church (FCBC) is a growing community seeking to make a kingdom … [Read more...]
Small Deepwater congregation makes large community impact
DEEPWATER – For a church that’s over 160 years old and has an average Sunday morning attendance of 40, Mount Zion Baptist Church in Deepwater seems surprisingly youthful and energetic in its ministries. Its largest ministry, the Storehouse at the Mount, serves the community through regular distribution of food and household items. It was begun by member Alesha Jenkins, who says the pantry was miraculously founded and continues to experience miracles. She had been homeschooling three sons … [Read more...]
MBC Executive Director Wes Fowler: ‘We proclaim Jesus’
SPRINGFIELD – Whatever else Missouri Baptists do in days to come, the Missouri Baptist Convention’s (MBC) new executive director Wes Fowler said they must proclaim the name of Jesus. His exhortation closed the MBC annual meeting, Oct. 24, at Crossway Baptist Church in Springfield. Many people, Fowler said, have asked about his plans for the future of the MBC. His current answer? Before making any other plans, his present plan is to listen and to learn about Missouri Baptist churches, … [Read more...]
Pray for Israel, global missions, the persecuted church
A Missouri Baptist church group nearly found themselves in a war zone early last month. The group of 42 people from Heritage Baptist Church in Lebanon, Mo., flew out of Israel on Friday, Oct. 6 – just before Hamas assailants attacked Israel and sparked an ongoing war that has claimed thousands of lives. “The war started while we were in the air coming home,” Pastor Kevin Smith told me earlier this month. “We came home with full hearts, with everything we had seen and experienced,” he … [Read more...]
Missouri evangelist Roger Alford goes where God guides
WARRENTON – “After pastoring for 42 years the Lord led me to hang up my pastor hat and start traveling as an evangelist as well as to do mission work,” says Roger Alford, a member of the Missouri Baptist Convention’s Fellowship of Missouri Baptist Evangelists. It was 10 years ago Alford moved from the pulpit into evangelism to start leading New Faith Ministries (NFM), which conducts church revivals, tent revivals, home groups, and one-on-one soul winning. He has 12 to 20 events a year, … [Read more...]
Sowing gospel seeds: Bethany family plants fun, faith at Gospel Farms
BETHANY – Casey Joyce never intended to be a farmer, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t keen to see a harvest. For the associate pastor of First Baptist Church, here, plowing fields, planting crops, and sharing the fruits have become a way to introduce the gospel into everyday life, all with the goal of seeing a spiritual harvest. “We knock on doors and have evangelism programs at church, but I wanted to take what the Lord has blessed us with to generate gospel conversations,” Joyce said. … [Read more...]
