Daniel Woodman, a journalism student at the University of Missouri and 2015 Baptist Press intern, shares his perspective on recent student protests at his school. Racism will not end until God returns. I hear it all the time. It is not an incorrect statement, but it is an incomplete one. Racism will not end until God returns, but we have an obligation to fight racism around every corner until the trumpets sound. That is why the protests at my university have been so monumental; they show … [Read more...]
Political neutrality, sex and quizzy pollsters
Data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Public Religion Research Institute’s American Values Atlas estimates that about 64 percent of the total delegates in states with presidential primaries on or before March 8 will come from states with electorates that may be at least 50 percent evangelical. In Missouri it is believed to be around 60 percent evangelical in advance of the March 15 primary, with Southern Baptists representing the bulk of that vote. Yet we still have untold thousands who … [Read more...]
Quick tears
Right after I make the coffee each morning, I journey to my study to pray and read the Word of God. I noticed this week how quickly tears were running down my face. I thought, “What’s with this?” It doesn’t take much these days for tears to flood my eyes. Maybe, I realize more now than ever how much a sinner I am and how deep is the grace of God. Maybe it’s the realization that every day of life is more precious than the day before. Maybe it’s the hole in my heart left by the loss of … [Read more...]
An inside look at Huckabee by former Pathway contributor Scott Lamb
In 2007 Mike Huckabee went from being a relatively unknown governor to a nationally known politician, coming in second for the Republican nomination for President in 2008. Since that time he has hosted a weekly cable news show, written several books, and championed conservative values and causes. In May 2015 he announced that he was running for President again, and he’s currently in the midst of that campaign. While many politicians have similar experiences and accomplishments, what makes … [Read more...]
‘Those Ungrateful Kids!’
Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. – I Chronicles 16:8 How can we get kids to appreciate their blessings? Can we just tell them they should be thankful and expect their attitudes to change? In today’s culture of materialism, it is not surprising that children often do not feel thankful for what they have. Things come easily. In many middle-class homes, one can go into the room of a child and see hundreds of dollars worth of toys or other … [Read more...]
Five evangelism sparks that catch fire
Firemen are awesome first-responders. They run toward the action. And when they arrive they know what to do and how to do it. Here are five evangelism ideas to spark your thinking as God’s Fire Investigator. 1. Where did the fire start? A home across the street from me once burned because a garage had faulty wiring. You can’t always look at someone and know the wiring in their heart. Engage them in conversations that are caring and genuine. The lost today hesitate to come to a … [Read more...]

Is death coming for The Pathway?
Will Missouri Southern Baptists always have The Pathway, and if so, what will it look like? I have no idea. But God does. From the day it was born on June 8, 2002, The Pathway has always belonged to God through the churches of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC). People have tried to discredit it and even silence it. Not surprisingly, it is despised by liberals. As someone who has been in journalism for four decades, I can tell you such attempts are not unusual and are even expected … [Read more...]
An appendix to the MBC Annual Meeting
In this issue there are several stories about the MBC annual meeting. When Missouri Baptists convene, we are one of the largest annual meetings among the state conventions in partnership with the Southern Baptist Convention. This year we had 1,022 messengers from 440 churches and 236 registered guests. I’m grateful for every Missouri Baptist and guest who came to hear, see, and learn about the amazing cooperative ministries our churches do throughout our state, this nation and the world. … [Read more...]
Robin D. Hadaway: Understanding IMB’s financial crisis
I met David Platt at a meeting in the Dominican Republic 13 months before he was elected as IMB President. During a break, I asked him, “What are you going to do when you become IMB president?” Now I understand and I like what he’s doing. As Southern Baptists seek to discern the magnitude and urgency of the current IMB financial crisis, I would like to share some thoughts. I led one of the IMB field administrative regions for over six years with about 325 missionaries under my charge. … [Read more...]
Why non-westerners reject the gospel
Missionaries to Muslims often report resistance to the gospel message – not because Muslims reject Jesus as a great prophet, but because the Qur’an denies the doctrines of original sin and the atonement. The idea of natural-born sinners runs counter to the Islamic belief that man is basically good but ignorant of Allah’s will. This may be overcome by repeating the shahada – “There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” – and by embracing the five pillars of Islam. In … [Read more...]
Wait for it
To wait on something means we have a heightened expectation that something is about to occur. Sometimes the expectation can lead to anxiousness or disappointment. Restaurants have wait lists where you have to wait for a table. We wait around to catch a plane. We wait for the sun to rise and wait for it to set. We even apologize for making someone wait. The longer I study people and become more aware of my own inner clock, the more I realize that not one of us is predisposed to patience. … [Read more...]
