GATLINBURG, Tenn. (BP) -- The arrests of two teenagers in connection with deadly wildfires in and around Gatlinburg, Tenn., have provoked expressions of sadness from three local Southern Baptist congregations that lost buildings in the blaze. The three Gatlinburg churches -- Roaring Fork Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and Banner Baptist Church -- also report God's continued work in their midst, including at least four first-time professions of faith in Christ over the past two … [Read more...]

Artificial intelligence spawns ethical concerns
NASHVILLE (BP) – The ethics of artificial intelligence (AI) has drawn comments from the White House and British House of Commons in recent weeks, along with a nonprofit organization established by Amazon, Google, Facebook, IBM and Microsoft. Now, Baptist computer scientists have called Christians to join the discussion. Louise Perkins, professor of computer science at California Baptist University, told Baptist Press she is “quite worried” at the lack of an ethical code related to AI. The … [Read more...]
Internet change could threaten religious liberty
WASHINGTON (BP) – When the U.S. government relinquishes control of a nonprofit organization that oversees internet domain names, a California Baptist University software engineering professor says, the potential for religious liberty violations could increase. Since 1998, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has coordinated and administered internet domain names, with oversight from the U.S. Department of Commerce. But as of Oct. 1, when the government’s contract … [Read more...]
Roy Moore suspension said to ignore ‘rule of law’
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (BP) – Although the nine-judge panel charged with trying Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore did not achieve the unanimous ruling required to remove him from office, it suspended him without pay for the remainder of his term in what Moore’s attorney Mat Staver called a violation of state law. “To suspend Chief Justice Moore for the rest of his term is the same as removal,” Staver, founder and chairman of the nonprofit legal group Liberty Counsel, said in a news release. The … [Read more...]
N.C. restroom bill doesn’t deter plans for SBC annual meeting in 2023
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BP) – Amid controversy over North Carolina’s controversial transgender restroom law, Southern Baptist Convention leaders estimate they’re less than two weeks away from finalizing contracts to hold the 2023 SBC annual meeting in Charlotte. And they say they’re glad to support the state for its moral stand on gender and sexuality. SBC President Steve Gaines said that “while other organizations such as the NCAA, NBA and NFL are seeking to punish North Carolinians for their … [Read more...]
Platt to EC: Seemingly dead man rose among UUPG
NASHVILLE (BP) – What appeared to local believers to be a physical resurrection from the dead among an unengaged, unreached people group in Southeast Asia has opened a door for Gospel witness and highlighted what International Mission Board President David Platt called “God’s power to supernaturally save sinners.” Platt recounted the story – which, though atypical in Western experience, bore similarities to biblical accounts of raising the dead – during his report to the Southern Baptist … [Read more...]

NASHVILLE (BP) – Spiritual awakening, soul winning and stewardship will be the three-pronged emphasis of Steve Gaines’ Southern Baptist Convention presidency, he told the SBC Executive Committee Monday (Sept. 19). Addressing the EC via video because of a scheduling conflict, Gaines said America’s morally deteriorating culture evidences the need for revival and awakening. He asked Southern Baptists to pray for revival using Psalm 85:6 and Habakkuk 3:2 as prompts. Revival “is a renewal from … [Read more...]
‘Intergalactic missions’?
NASHVILLE (BP) – Discovery of another planet that might support life has given rise to speculation about intelligent life elsewhere in the universe – and whether such lifeforms would need the Gospel. “Briefly stated, saying that scientists ‘think there may be life’ on [the newly discovered planet] is greatly overstating what the scientific community is thinking,” said Bill Nettles, physics department chair at Union University. But “if there is intelligent life on other planets, we … [Read more...]

9/11 called catalyst for missions to Muslims
NEW YORK (BP) – When radical Islamic terrorists brought down the World Trade Center's Twin Towers 15 years ago, they didn't realize their actions would also help bring down walls to reaching Muslims with the Gospel. But that's exactly what happened. In the years since Sept. 11, 2001, the number of Unengaged, Muslim Unreached People Groups (UMUPGs) in the world has decreased by nearly 20 percent, from 1,333 in 2001 to 1,077 today, according to statistics provided by Vision 5:9, a … [Read more...]
Scholars refute Times transgenderism op-ed
NASHVILLE (BP) – A New York Times op-ed suggesting the Old Testament supports transgenderism has been classified by Southern Baptist seminary professors as a mischaracterization of Hebrew grammar and theology. “It should not surprise any of us that if we want to find something in Scripture, then we will twist it to say what we want it to say,” Paul Wegner, professor of Old Testament studies at Gateway Seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention, told Baptist Press. Mark Sameth, a Reform … [Read more...]
