Goodbye not easy for parents of SBC missionaries
Tess Rivers/International Mission Board RICHMOND, Va. (BP) – “Over my dead body!” Those were Connie Beckler’s exact words more than seven years ago when she got the phone call that her daughter and son-in-law had committed to international missions. “I prayed for everything to go wrong,” Beckler, who is a member of Maywood Baptist Church, Independence, said. “I didn’t want them to go because they talked about India. They talked about Africa, and I thought, ‘Oh my. ... No!’” Then … [Read more...]
New book: Is there hope for ‘God less America’?
JOY ALLMOND/Billy Graham Evan. Assoc. CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Franklin Graham once said, “I believe that a time is fast approaching – I think it will be in my lifetime – when the preaching of the gospel is referred to as hate speech.” And Todd Starnes couldn’t agree more. Starnes, the host of Fox News and Commentary, heard on radio stations nationwide, has joined the fight for religious freedom by reporting stories of the silenced Church. “I agree 1,000 percent with Franklin Graham,” … [Read more...]
Social networking offers potential to share faith
David Jeremiah/Special to The Pathway EL CAJON, Calif. – Much of what gets shared on some social networking sites can be less than profound. With the wheat comes the chaff in any new endeavor. As Christians, our goal is to recognize the potential for good that social networking technology presents – new opportunities for serious communication about spiritually important matters. The most important, of course, is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Think what a difference 2,000 years has made! … [Read more...]

What does Hobby Lobby’s win mean?
Evan Lenow & Trey Dimsdale/Land Center In the highly anticipated decision of Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Supreme Court issued a victory to closely held for-profit corporations on the issue of religious liberty. While the decision was not as sweeping as some may have wanted—or as Justice Ginsburg claimed in her dissent—the Court’s decision upheld the idea that Americans need not check their right to religious liberty at the door when they enter the business world. At issue for the … [Read more...]
Grandma uses texting to spread God’s Word
SUSAN MIRES/contributing writer LEAWOOD, Kan. – Monty Sheridan is a texting grandma – and she is determined to use her power for good. “There’s nothing I like better than to talk to someone about Jesus,” said Sheridan. One of her most significant undertakings began with a request from her grandson Brett Hilton. In the fall of 2010 when he was a student at Northwest Missouri State University, Hilton sent her a text message: “Hey, Nana, can you do something for me?” He asked if she would … [Read more...]
GuideStone applauds Supreme Court decision in Hobby Lobby case
By Roy Hayhurst DALLAS — Today’s Supreme Court decision in favor of Hobby Lobby is good news for defenders of religious liberty, GuideStone President O.S. Hawkins said. The 5-4 decision affirms the right of the Green family, the Christian owners of the for-profit hobby supply chain, to operate their health plans in a way that is consistent with their values. While the Supreme Court has protected family business owners, it has left unanswered whether the so-called accommodation to the … [Read more...]
Five time-tested discipleship models

This week we will look at five models for disciple-making: Just over a generation ago most churches did disciple-making the same way. They did it in ongoing, age-graded groups that studied dated quarterlies and met on Sunday … [Read more...]
Preparing our children for the future
“Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.” I Peter 2:17 As Independence Day approaches, we turn our thoughts again to the condition of our country and speculate as to what the future holds for our children. We are seeing more and more conflicts in rendering unto Caesar and at the same time being able to render unto God. No one knows exactly what the future holds, but certain trends seem quite evident. We are seeing greater antagonism … [Read more...]
