BOLIVAR (SBU) — Ninety-two undergraduate students graduated from Southwest Baptist University during commencement Friday, Dec. 18, at the Jane and Ken Meyer Wellness and Sports Center on the Bolivar campus. The University holds graduation twice a year, in December and May. In her commencement address, Dr. Patricia N. Long, an SBU alumna, used themes from the classic film “It’s a Wonderful Life” to encourage graduates and remind them of how many lives they touch. She also challenged them … [Read more...]
Student leaders share Christ at Central BSU
WARRENSBURG – With an emphasis on the local church and on developing leaders to share the gospel, the Baptist Student Union (BSU) at the University of Central Missouri (UCM) is consistently working with nearly 175 students weekly – an increase from roughly 20 students only a few years ago. “We’ve seen God do some really neat things,” said Brad Carr, who became director of the BSU in the fall of 2013. During the past few years, he has been amazed by students’ openness to the gospel … [Read more...]
Adoption ‘a picture of the gospel,’ Jasper Rains says
ST. LOUIS – One thought filled Jasper Rains’ prayers during his daily, one-hour drive to and from work in early 2007 – the thought of a baby boy who had been abandoned by his birth mother at the hospital. The previous summer, after Jasper and his wife Kendra received Missouri state foster care licenses, the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home (MBCH) contacted them about this baby boy. “The Children’s Home told us … that this may be our child,” Jasper, who now serves as minister of … [Read more...]
Could churches erase the orphan problem?
BRIDGETON – A map of the nation created by “Together for Adoption” – a Christian conference for adoptive families – suggests that churches around the United States could take care of the nation’s orphan care problem if Christians fully engage in caring for the fatherless. In Missouri, according to the map, there are only 2,067 orphans in Missouri, but there are 8,973 churches of various denominations within the state. So Missouri churches could erase the orphan problem in the state if only … [Read more...]
Is death coming for The Pathway?
Will Missouri Southern Baptists always have The Pathway, and if so, what will it look like? I have no idea. But God does. From the day it was born on June 8, 2002, The Pathway has always belonged to God through the churches of the Missouri Baptist Convention (MBC). People have tried to discredit it and even silence it. Not surprisingly, it is despised by liberals. As someone who has been in journalism for four decades, I can tell you such attempts are not unusual and are even expected … [Read more...]
Robin D. Hadaway: Understanding IMB’s financial crisis
I met David Platt at a meeting in the Dominican Republic 13 months before he was elected as IMB President. During a break, I asked him, “What are you going to do when you become IMB president?” Now I understand and I like what he’s doing. As Southern Baptists seek to discern the magnitude and urgency of the current IMB financial crisis, I would like to share some thoughts. I led one of the IMB field administrative regions for over six years with about 325 missionaries under my charge. … [Read more...]
MBCH considers partnering with new ministries
BRIDGETON – Sometimes you look for opportunities to minister, and sometimes the opportunities seek you out. In recent days three new opportunities to expand the Missouri Baptist Children’s Home’s (MBCH) reach have knocked on MBCH’s door, and were discussed at the agency’s trustee meeting Oct. 13 at the main Bridgeton campus. The first is the Branches at Brookline, a residential facility for developmentally disabled adults in Republic. The board of Southwest Special Cares, which operates … [Read more...]
